Nalini Singh steps back into the shadows of her “heartbreakingly original”* world where angels rule, vampires serve, and the innocent can pay the greatest price of all…

Vampire hunter Elena Deveraux and her lover, the lethally beautiful archangel Raphael, have returned home to New York only to face an uncompromising new evil…

A vampire has attacked a girls’ school—the assault one of sheer, vicious madness—and it is only the first act. Rampant bloodlust takes vampire after vampire, threatening to make the streets run with blood. Then Raphael himself begins to show signs of an uncontrolled rage, as inexplicable storms darken the city skyline and the earth itself shudders.

The omens are suddenly terrifyingly clear.

An ancient and malevolent immortal is rising. The violent winds whisper her name: Caliane. She has returned to reclaim her son, Raphael. Only one thing stands in her way: Elena, the consort who must be destroyed…

*Errant Dreams Reviews

Elena and Raphael have returned to New York after their explosive trip to Beijing. Elena is more than happy to be home until she gets a call that her to her step-sisters school. There she finds 2 girls murdered but what’s the motive? The vampire who killed the girls seems to be in bloodlust but doesn’t seem out of his mind as a normal vampire would when they reach the brink of insanity. Elena is determined to find out exactly who is behind it all. The problem is that there are more and more vamp killings with no explanations behind them. Elena follows the scent trails but never finds any answers.

Raphael is on edge. The weather conditions all over the world are speaking to him about an ancient rising and he feels that it is his mother Caliane. When she went to sleep a thousand years prior she was insane – he has no idea if she will be sane when she wakes, or not. All the events happening point to insanity but he can’t kill her before she wakes as it is against the Archangel’s laws.

As if this all isn’t enough Elena and Raphael are still trying to work out their daily relationship. They love each other so much but Elena is unwavering in her decision to remain independent. Raphael allows her her independence, but only if she has a bodyguard along…and to Elena that’s not independence! How can they reach a happy medium?

I have to tell you that I loved this book! Everything about it was wonderful. Nalini Singh has such an incredible way of putting a story together in parts and pieces but ties it all up and brings it together in an amazing conclusion. I got sucked into Elena and Raphael’s life from the very first page and I barely put the book down to eat!

Elena and Raphael’s relationship is equal parts tumultuous and loving. I adored seeing them together and how they truly felt the bond and love that the other felt for each other. Raphael is becoming more human/mortal but he can still be the cold bastard from book one. He has such a multi-faceted personality and we get to see many different parts of that in this book. Elena is a kick-ass angel but can still be vulnerable at times – especially when around her father. She’s gaining strength as an angel but still has a lot of work to do – she doesn’t show her weakness to many people though. We get to see her with her friends from the Guild and it shows us the very human side of her. They’re just perfect for each other and I love reading about them!

As to the secondary characters…we get to see most of them once again. I know that this series is called the Guild Hunter series but I have to admit I’m more interested in the angels than in the Hunters. lol I’d love to get inside the heads of Illium, Venom, Dmitri, Aohdan and Jason. Lijuan also makes an appearance in this book – the bitch – but I can’t deny she’s written so well!

Once again Nalini Singh has written a most excellent book. If you’ve been reading the series you’re not going to want to miss this book. If you haven’t started the series – go get it and read it! It’s definitely worth every page turning moment.
