MR-New

Casee: April was the best reading month I’ve had in a year. It was amazing. I read FOUR entire books. Yes, FOUR whole books. This is record breaking. My days of reading double digits are over. I’ve accepted that and am peace with it. I’m just happy I read FOUR books. My heart is happy.

Dark Legacy by Christine Feehan | 3 out of 5
Storm Gathering by Rebecca Zanetti | 4.25 out of 5
Winter Igniting by Rebecca Zanetti | 4.75 out of 5
The Thief by J.R. Ward | 4 out of 5

My favorite reads were definitely the Rebecca Zanetti books. I was surprised that Winter Igniting came in before Storm Gathering.

Holly: I feel like I didn’t read anything in April. I was in a weird reading funk and nothing really held my attention. Turns out I managed to read 14 books, which is way more than I thought.

Dragon’s Oath by Sophie Stern | DNF
Snowfall and Secrets by Kimberly Loth | 2.75 out of 5
Natural Mage by K.F. Breene | 4 out of 5
Neanderthal Seeks Human by Penny Reid | 2.75 out of 5
Wildfire by Ilona Andrews (audiobook) | 4.5 out of 5
White Hot by Ilona Andrews (audiobook) | 4.25 out of 5
Prince in Leather by Holley Trent | DNF
The Hellion by Christi Caldwell | 3.5 out of 5
Clean Sweep by Ilona Andrews (audiobook) | 4.25 out of 5
Sweep in Peace (audiobook) | 4 out of 5
One Fell Sweep by Ilona Andrews (audiobook) | 4.5 out of 5
Hour of Need by Melinda Leigh (audiobook) | 2.75 out of 5
Ocean Light by Nalini Singh | 3.75- 4 out of 5
Crimes Against Magic by Steve McHugh | 3.5 out of 5

My favorite read of the month was Natural Mage by K.F. Breene. I’m really loving that series. My Least favorite was probably Neanderthal Seeks Human by Penny Reid. I didn’t hate the book, but I had high expectations based on recommendations from those in my trust circle and it didn’t live up to them.

Rowena: April was a junk reading month for me. I only read 6 books. What in the world is going on? The month started off on a bad reading note with the Leila Sales book that I read so maybe that soured me on more books? Who knows, I just hope that May is much better for me on the reading end. Wish me luck!

Here’s what I did read.

If You Don’t Have Anything Nice to Say by Leila Sales | 1 out of 5
The Hookup (Jordan Brothers #1) by Erin McCarthy | 4 out of 5
Dragon Actually (Dragon Kin #1) by G.A. Aiken | 3 out of 5
Neanderthal Seeks Human (Knitting in the City #1) by Penny Reid | 2.75 out of 5
Hot Asset (21 Wall Street #1) by Lauren Layne | 4.25 out of 5
The Way You Make Me Feel by Maurene Goo | 4 out of 5

My favorite read of the month goes to Hot Asset by Lauren Layne. It had everything that I love in a Lauren Layne novel but also in a romance. Strong characters, a sizzling romance with hella chemistry and supporting characters that keep me thirsty for more. I’m looking forward to the other books that Layne releases for these characters. Kennedy and Kate are going to be great, same with Matt and Sabrina. Woot!

My least favorite read of the month goes to If You Don’t Have Anything Nice to Say by Leila Sales. The message had the potential to be really good but the delivery didn’t work for me at all. I closed that book with so much rage that I just might give up the author because I’m too scared that I’d get another one of those. Just, no.

This month we’re giving away:

Monthly Reads: March 2018

Posted April 2, 2018 by Holly in Features, Giveaways | 9 Comments

MR-New

Casee: I read two whole books in March. Two entire books. I’m not even mad at myself because I read two whole books!

Covert Game by Christine Feehan | 4 out of 5
Shadow Keeper by Christine Feeha | 3.75 out of 5

My favorite book was obviously Covert Game. It bums me out that there is only one GhostWalker book per year.

Holly: March was a sad reading month for me. I wanted to read, but nothing really held my attention. I started close to 30 books I ended up setting aside after a few pages or a few chapters. I did manage to get a few books during the last week. Let’s hope April is better. I miss reading.

The Woman Left Behind by Linda Howard | 3.75 out of 5
Dark Desires by Eve Silver | 3 out of 5
Duke of Sin by Elizabeth Hoyt | 4 out of 5
Complicated (audiobook) | 3 out of 5
Sweet Dreams by Kristen Ashley (audiobook) (reread) | 2 out of 5/ 4 out of 5
For You by Kristen Ashley (reread) | 3.5 out of 5
On the Edge by Ilona Andrews (reread) | 3.5 out of 5
Bayou Moon by Ilona Andrews (audiobook) | 4 out of 5
Wildfire by Ilona Andrews (reread) | 4.5 out of 5
Eight Simple Rules for Dating a Dragon by Kerrelyn Sparks | 3 out of 5
Dragon Actually by G.A. Aiken | 4.25 out of 5
Flames and Chains by G.A. Aiken | 3 out of 5
About a Dragon by G.A. Aiken | 3 out of 5

My favorite read of the month was Dragon Actually by G.A. Aiken, with Duke of Sin a close second. My least favorite was Flames and Chains, a short story included with Dragon Actually. It was originally written for her newsletter and it showed. I also really struggled with the audiobook of Sweet Dreams by Kristen Ashley. That was horrible. I love that book like whoa, but the audio was junk.

Rowena: March was the month of Baby Caiden. It was also the month that started my obsession with all things Ilona Andrews. Baby Caiden was visiting California from Utah for three weeks and he’s leaving tomorrow so I’m a little sad but also happy to report that I’m still loving and reading all things Ilona Andrews. I only read 12 books this month but I’ll take what I can get and be happy that I’m actually reading and not in a slump.

Here’s what I read in March.

Burn for Me (Hidden Legacy #1) by Ilona Andrews | 5 out of 5
White Hot (Hidden Legacy #2) by Ilona Andrews | 4.25 out of 5
Wildfire (Hidden Legacy #3) by Ilona Andrews | 4.75 out of 5
Over Us, Over You by Whitney G | DNF
Hello Stranger (Ravenels #4) by Lisa Kleypas | 4.5 out of 5
On the Edge (The Edge #1) by Ilona Andrews | 4.5 out of 5
On Hart’s Boardwalk (On Dublin Street #6.7) by Samantha Young | 4 out of 5
Bayou Moon (The Edge #2) by Ilona Andrews | 4.25 out of 5
Jock Blocked (Gridiron #2) by Jen Frederick | 4.75 out of 5
Hot Response (Boston Fire #4) by Shannon Stacey | 4 out of 5
Suddenly Forbidden (Gray Springs University #1) by Ella Fields | 4 out of 5
The Love Coupon (Stubborn Hearts #2) by Ainslie Paton | 4 out of 5

My favorite read of the month goes to Burn for Me by Ilona Andrews (anyone surprised?) and my least favorite read of the month goes to Over Us, Over You by Whitney G. Burn for Me was just so freaking good. I loved the world, the magic, Nevada and Mad Rogan and everyone else we meet in that book. As for Over Us, Over You, it was too immature for me and I stayed annoyed with the main characters so I DNF’d that one. I’m wondering if I’m going to have to break up with Whitney G. soon. I haven’t cared for her last few releases that I read. Hmm.

This month we’re giving away:

Monthly Reads: February 2018

Posted March 6, 2018 by Casee in Features, Giveaways | 12 Comments

MR-New

Casee: I only read three books. I looked it up just now and I was shocked. It felt like I read ten books. I am just happy that I’m reading again.

Devil’s Cut by J.R. Ward | 3 out of 5
Blood Fury by J.R. Ward | 4 out of 5
Archangel’s Viper by Nalini Singh | 3.75 out of 5

Holly: February was a strange reading month for me. It felt like I read a lot, but I only read 15 books. Part of the reason is because I listened to Anne Bishop’s The Others series on audio, then sat down and read them. So really I read each of The Others books twice.

Hello Stranger by Lisa Kleypas (audio) | 4.5 out of 5
Written in Red by Anne Bishop | 4.25 out of 5
Murder of Crows by Anne Bishop | 4.25 out of 5
Vision in Silver by Anne Bishop | 4.25 out of 5
Marked in Flesh by Anne Bishop | 4.25 out of 5
Etched in Bone by Anne Bishop | 4.25 out of 5
Lake Silence by Anne Bishop | 4.25 out of 5
Natural Witch by K.F. Breene | 4 out of 5
Sweep in Peace by Ilona Andrews (reread) | 4.5 out of 5
One Fell Sweep by Ilona Andrews (reread) | 4.75 out of 5
Burn for Me by Ilona Andrews (reread) | 4.25 out of 5
White Hot by Ilona Andrews (reread) | 4.25 out of 5
Saving Grace by Julie Garwood (audio) | 4.5 out of 5
Lord of Scoundrels by Loretta Chase (audio) | 4.5 out of 5
Rough Ride by Kristen Ashley | 3 out of 5

My favorite reads of the month were the Anne Bishop books. I’m not sure I have a favorite from the series, so I’m just including them all. Hello Stranger was also wonderful. I adored Ethan.

My least favorite was Rough Ride by Kristen Ashley. I liked Snapper, but overall the novella was slow moving and kind of boring. It wasn’t a bad read, it just didn’t hold up against the other books I read this month.

Rowena: February was a busy month for me. We were in the thick of multiple basketball seasons so I drove all over the South Bay to support El Camino College, Vanguard University and Torrance Parks and Recs. I’m trying to make as many basketball games as I can because I know that my girls basketball playing days are numbered. I’m so going to miss this when it’s all said and done so I’m glad that February was good to my girls and their basketball teams.

Anyway, even with all of the basketball games, I still managed to get some reading done. Not as much as I thought I did but it’s all good because I read and that’s what is important.

Here’s what I read last month.

Irresistible You (Chicago Rebels #1) by Kate Meader | 4 out of 5
So Over You (Chicago Rebels #2) by Kate Meader | 4.25 out of 5
Undone by You (Chicago Rebels #3) by Kate Meader | 4 out of 5
The Wedding Date by Jasmine Guillory | 4 out of 5
Runaway Groom (I Do, I Don’t #2) by Lauren Layne | 5 out of 5
Sweep in Peace (Innkeeper Chronicles #2) by Ilona Andrews | 4.5 out of 5
Living Out Loud (Austen #3) by Staci Hart | 3 out of 5
One Fell Sweep (Innkeeper Chronicles #3) by Ilona Andrews | 4.75 out of 5
What a Difference a Duke Makes (School for Dukes #1) by Lenora Bell | 4 out of 5
Hurts to Love You (Forbidden Hearts #3) by Alisha Rai | 4 out of 5

My favorite reads of the month go to Runaway Groom by Lauren Layne, Sweep in Peace and One Fell Sweep by Ilona Andrews. All three of those books were fantastic reads and I’m thirsty for more from both authors.

My least favorite read of the month goes to The Wedding Date by Jasmine Guillory. The very first time that I read that book, I zipped right through it and glossed over a lot of things that I didn’t think were a big deal until I was writing down my thoughts for my review. I realized that those things that bothered me, bothered me a great deal more than I originally thought so I read the book again from cover to cover and…I didn’t like a lot of things that went on in the book so my enjoyment of the book suffered. The heroine got on my nerves and the hero treated his friends poorly so he got on my nerves too.

Monthly Reads: January 2018

Posted February 2, 2018 by Holly in Features, Giveaways | 15 Comments

MR-New

Casee: I read two books in January and oh my gosh am I eager to share.

Year One by Nora Roberts | 3.5 out of 5
Judgement Road by Christine Feehan | 4 out of 5

I was really excited to read Year One by Nora Roberts, but I was also disappointed. My favorite book of the two was Judgement Road by Christine Feehan. I loved the characters and although it had a few things I didn’t care for, overall I really enjoyed it.

Holly: I had a pretty good reading month. I listened to quite a few audiobooks, which is new for me.

A Promise of Fire by Amanda Bouchet | 4 out of 5
Breath of Fire by Amanda Bouchet | 2.75 out of 5
Heart on Fire by Amanda Bouchet | 2 out of 5
Pretty Girls Dancing by Kylie Brant (audio) | 4 out of 5
Binti by Nnedi Okorafor | 3.25 out of 5
Binti: Home by Nnedi Okorafor | 3 out of 5
Binti: The Night Masquerade by Nnedi Okorafor | 3.25 out of 5
Happiness for Humans by P.Z. Reizin | 3 out of 5
Beyond Scandal and Desire by Lorraine Heath | 4.25 out of 5
Honor’s Splendour by Julie Garwood (audio) | 5 out of 5
The Year We Hid Away by Sarina Bowen (reread) | 5 out of 5
The Gamble by Kristen Ashley (audio) | 3.25 out of 5
The Wedding by Julie Garwood (audio) | 4.5 out of 5
The Secret by Julie Garwood (audio) | 4.5 out of 5
The Hook Up by Kristen Callihan (reread) | 4.5 out of 5
Guardian Angel by Julie Garwood (audio) | 4 out of 5
Brooklynaire by Sarina Bowen | 4.25 out of 5

My favorite read of the month was probably Pretty Girls Dancing by Kylie Brant. It wasn’t a romance, but I enjoyed the ebb and flow of the story. I also really enjoyed Brooklynaire by Sarina Bowen, A Promise of Fire by Amanda Bouchet and the Binti series by Nnedi Okorafor. My least favorite read was Heart on Fire by Amanda Bouchet. That book was a hot mess.

Rowena: January was a pretty strong start on the reading front for me so I’m pretty happy with myself right now. I read some pretty awesome books and some, not so awesome books but still, overall, January was good to me.

Here’s what I read.

Man Candy (Real Love #3) by Jessica Lemmon | 4 out of 5
Beyond Scandal & Desire (Sins for All Seasons #1) by Lorraine Heath | 4.25 out of 5
About that Kiss (Heartbreaker Bay #5) by Jill Shalvis | 4 out of 5
The Truth about Love & Dukes (Dear Lady Truelove #1) by Laura Lee Guhrke | 3.25 out of 5
Breaking the Ice (Juniper Falls #2) by Julie Cross | 4.75 out of 5
West Coast Love (Journey to the Heart #3) by Tif Marcelo | 3.5 out of 5
Love Between Enemies (Grad Night #2) by Molly E. Lee | 2 out of 5
The Trouble with True Love (Dear Lady Truelove #2) by Laura Lee Guhrke | 4.25 out of 5
Man Hands (Man Hands #1) by Sarina Bowen & Tanya Eby | DNF
Brooklynaire (Brooklyn Bruisers #4) by Sarina Bowen | 4.75 out of 5
Shot on Gold (Play by Play #14) by Jaci Burton | 3 out of 5
In Skates Trouble (Chicago Rebels #0.5) by Kate Meader | 3 out of 5

My favorite read of the month goes to Brooklynaire by Sarina Bowen because holy cow, Nate and Becca’s story rocked my socks. I adored pretty much everything about it and cannot wait for more…we’re getting more, right? I love that series.

My least favorite read of the month goes to Love Between Enemies by Molly E. Lee. That book just wasn’t for me. The heroine got on my hot damn nerves at every turn, even in the end when all is well again, I still didn’t like her but what saved that book from being a complete bust was the hero. What a fantastic kid Gordon was. Love, love, loved him. Another book that I couldn’t get into was Man Hands by Sarina Bowen & Tanya Eby. I gave up at about a little more than a third through the book because I wasn’t connecting with anything, the characters, the humor so I quit it. That’s the very first book by Bowen that I’ve ever quit. That makes me sad.

Monthly Reads: December 2017

Posted January 8, 2018 by Rowena in Features | 12 Comments

MR-New

Casee: December kicked my butt. The only words I read were out of a cookbook. The beginning of 2017 was a great reading time for me, so here’s hoping that 2018 is the same.

Holly: I logged 24 reads in December. I cheated a bit because a lot of those were short stories. I don’t care. I’m counting them anyway.

Man Hands by Sarina Bowen and Tonya Eby | 3.25/5
Judgment Road by Christine Feehan | 2.5-3/5
Law Man Short Story by Christine Ashely | 3/5
Merry and Bright by Kristen Ashley | 4/5
Every Year by Kristen Ashley | 3.5/5
Valentinos by Kristen Ashley | 3.5/5
More Pleasure Than Pain by Kristen Ashley | 3.5/5
The Return of Eden McCall by Judith Duncan (reread) | 4/5
Complicated by Kristen Ashley (reread) | 3.75/5
Rock Addiction by Nalini Singh (reread) | 4.5/5
Sweet Dreams by Kristen Ashley (reread) | 4.5/5
Burn Bright by Patricia Briggs | 4.25/5
The Hookup by Kristen Ashley | 3.25/5
Spellbinder by Thea Harrison (reread) | 4.5/5
Kinked by Thea Harrison (reread) | 4.5/5
Lord of Scoundrels by Loretta Chase (reread) | 4.5/5
Star Kissed by Nalini Singh | 3.5/5
A Walk on the Cliffs by Nalini Singh | 3.5/5
Fairy Balloons by Nalini Singh | 3.5/5
A Small Fairytale by Nalini Singh | 4/5
One Night at the Refuge by Nalini Singh | 3.5/5
Zoe’s Workshop by Nalini Singh | 3.5/5
Weapon’s Training by Nalini Singh | 3.5/5
A Sip of Eternity by Nalini Singh | 3.5/5

My favorite read of the month was Burn Bright by Patricia Briggs. I love Charles and Anna. My least favorite was Judgment Road by Christine Feehan. I’m still deciding if my feelings for the book were marred by my expectations for Feehan as an author.

Rowena: December was such a busy month for me. I had a family emergency that kept me up nights and full of nerves that my reading suffered because of it. Things are a lot better now but I only managed to read 6 books in the entire month. Here’s what I read.

Love, Life and the List by Kasie West | 4.5 out of 5
Taking a Chance (Whisper Creek #6) by Maggie McGinnis | 3.75 out of 5
North to You (Journey to the Heart #1) by Tif Marcelo | 4 out of 5
An English Bride in Scotland (Highlanders #1) by Lynsay Sands | 3.75 out of 5
The Matchmaker’s Playbook (Wingmen Inc #1) by Rachel van Dyken | 3.5 out of 5
Complicated by Kristen Ashley | 4 out of 5

My favorite read of the month is Love, Life and the List by Kasie West. It’s a contemporary young adult novel and I thought it was a cute and sweet romance.

My least favorite read of the month goes to The Matchmaker’s Playbook by Rachel van Dyken. The hero in that book was shallow and he was conceited and not at all appealing (outside of his gorgeous face and body) and I didn’t feel there was any real growth to his character so that was disappointing. I’m curious to see how it’s portrayed by Passionflix once the movie comes out.
