NEVER BEFORE PUBLISHEDAN ALL-NEW GUILD HUNTER NOVEL
Return to New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh’s sensual and painfully beautiful Guild Hunter world in her new novel of sacrifice, loyalty, and the choices of love that can shatter the heart.
In the wake of a brutal war, the archangel Raphael and his hunter consort, Elena, are dealing with the treacherously shifting tides of archangelic politics and the people of a battered but not broken city. The last thing their city needs is more death, especially a death that bears the eerie signature of an insane enemy archangel who cannot—should not—be walking the streets.
This hunt must be undertaken with stealth and without alerting their people. It must be handled by those who can become shadows themselves…
Ash is a gifted tracker and a woman cursed with the ability to sense the secrets of anyone she touches. But there’s one man she knows all too well without a single instant of skin contact: Janvier, the dangerously sexy Cajun vampire who has fascinated and infuriated her for years. Now, as they track down a merciless killer, their cat-and-mouse game of flirtation and provocation has turned into a profound one of the heart. And this time, it is Ash’s secret, dark and terrible, that threatens to destroy them both.
This is Ashwini and Janvier’s story, which began in the novella Angel’s Pawn. It also features chapters from Raphael and Elena, as well as Dmitri. I don’t remember the other books containing so many POV changes, but I enjoyed the story regardless.
The action is a bit slower in this book than in the few leading up to it since it takes place in the aftermath of the major battle fought in Archangel’s Legion. The slower pace worked since there were several threads being pulled. Ash and Janvier’s case, her personal struggle, unrest in the wake of the battle, and the politics Elena and Raphael dealt with kept the story moving.
I loved Ash. She’s a take-charge, no-nonsense kind of person. That Janvier respected her strength and intelligence made the story so much stronger. He didn’t try to stifle her or protect her, even though she was mortal and he wasn’t. He cared for her and try to help lessen her burdens, which made him nearly irresistible (to her and to me). I loved that the chase was foreplay to him. While Ash was hunting him and they were bickering back and forth, he knew it was only a matter of time.
Ash’s personal struggle really broke my heart. Singh always does a good job of pulling me into her stories, but I was on the edge of my seat with this one, waiting to see how it would all be resolved.
We were introduced to Naasir in this book. He was mentioned in other books, but this is the first time he spent any time on page. I absolutely adored him. His interactions with Raphael, the seven, Elena and Ash were hilarious. I’m very much looking forward to reading his story (please!?!).
While the pacing was a bit slower in this novel, I was captivated from page one. I couldn’t put it down. I read it in one sitting.
