Held captive against her will…

When Leilani travels to the mountain region of her new planet, Lumineta, she discovers the remote mountain clan has a law stating that any unmated female in their sector can be forced to live there for one moon cycle. At first she’s livid—until she realizes that being held captive means that the warriors bring her gifts and simply try to impress her as part of their courting rituals. But she’s not interested in anyone except the sexy leader—and living under his roof makes her feel nothing like a captive. He has her rethinking everything she thought she knew about Luminet males.

The last thing he needs in his life is a complicated human female…

Con has never thought much about taking a mate. As leader of his clan, he’s too busy and females are too complicated—especially those mysterious humans. But the longer he’s around Leilani, the more he realizes she’s worth fighting for. Despite his planet’s tradition that says two males mate with one female, he has no intention of sharing—or ever letting her go.

Leilani isn’t from the planet Lumineta. She was rescued from a dying planet (we never know what the name of the planet is but it sounds a lot like Earth) and brought to Lumineta along with many other women from the same planet. On Lumineta the men outnumber the women so most women take 2 mates – seems to work for them. Leilani’s not sure how she feels about it so she hasn’t chosen a mate – or mates – yet. The two female friends she made on the transport on the way to the planet have both claimed mates and are deeply in love. She knows that the Lumineta men are beautiful and respectful of women but it’s a bit daunting being around men who are constantly trying to mate her. She works at an architectural firm who is currently doing a job for a clan in the mountain regions and heads there to discuss plans with them. Unfortunately she’s not familiar with their laws and once she gets there one of their men enacts one of their primitive laws and Leilani is stuck in the region for the next moon cycle (a month).

She stays at the house of the clan leader, Con, and though she finds him incredibly attractive she’s pissed that she’s basically being held against her will. Fortunately Con, who also finds Leilani attractive, makes an effort to put her at ease and soon the pair are in bed together. Although they each say that it’s just for fun til she leaves they each discover that being apart isn’t what they want after all.

I received this book and immediately started reading. I then stopped and bought books 1 & 2 in the series. No, you don’t need to read them to enjoy this book but it does give you a good foundation of the world to work with while reading. (I also hate reading things out of order but that’s all my issue.) The men that I had gotten used to in books 1 & 2 were quite different then the men in book 3. These men were mountain men – strong, gritty, more primitive – but still honorable men and respectful of Leilani. They enacted the law just so she wouldn’t leave and they could try and court her which is incredibly strange but I guess they thought there was no other way they were gonna get a woman out in the snow otherwise! lol.

Anyway, I liked the men a lot, especially Con. He had been hurt by his mother when she had walked away from her mates and her children and didn’t think love was for him. Then he met Leilani and that changed. Yes, they fell in love quickly but Con was such a sweet man how could she not fall in love with him?

Leilani was an independent woman who didn’t want to be tied down, at least that’s what she told herself. I wouldn’t have liked to have been held against me will either but she I thought she acted a tad childish at first. Luckily she got over that. 🙂

There was another subplot that involved Leilani as well but I won’t get in to that as it’s best discovered on your own. I thought the story was good and I really enjoyed reading the story. As I said before – there’s no need to read books 1 & 2 first but they’re good so why not?

Two brothers want to possess her…

After her planet was destroyed, Brianna was rescued by two fierce and desperately gorgeous warrior brothers. Aeron and Hauk. They want to keep her, protect her, mate her. But what the brothers wanted from her was too much to handle. Settling into a new culture was hard enough without dealing with the custom that dictates she mate with two males. So she pushed them away.

They’ll do anything to protect her…

An attack sends Brianna back into the arms of the sexy brothers. Now they'll do whatever it takes to win her over. But can Brianna go against the conventions of her human nature and accept both warriors as her mates? It might not matter because someone is out for blood and it’s up to Aeron and Hauk to defend her against a deadly enemy.

I  have long admired writers whose creativity takes them into the future.  I’m not sure I could ever dream up some of the scenarios they do and make them so realistic and believable.  It’s probably one of the reasons I am not much of a sci-fi/futuristic fiction lover.  But when I saw that this book was authored by one of my favorites under a pseudonym I was a sucker and had to download it.  I’m glad I did.

Perhaps one of the reasons I liked this novella was the fact that the heroine struggled with the culture of the world in which she finds herself.  We all know how much stress we experience when we encounter significant changes in our lives–loss of or change of jobs, a wedding or funeral, moving out of an area that has been home for a long time and so forth.  Imagine finding oneself in a totally alien environment where the expectations are completely foreign to one’s upbringing as well as one’s understand of “normal” or what is “moral.”  So it is with this heroine and her story unfold with a lot of emotion inwardly for her as well as the intensity of the two brothers who are determined to make her their mate.

This story is beautifully written and flows so seamlessly from page to page and scene to scene.  The characters are well-defined and there is balance between dialogue and that inner monologue that all novels include, some more than others.   It’s sexy and full of spice, and the brothers are the stuff of which fantasies are made.   This author has put lots of story in a small number of pages.  It’s not long or time consuming but is a very nice little literary treat for an afternoon or short evening read or one of those nice things we do for ourselves amid the busyness of our day.  With the holidays approaching, this would be a nice little “personal time” kind of indulgence.

I give it a rating of 3.75 out of 5

Guest Review: Tempting Alibi by Savannah Stuart

Tracy’s review of Tempting Alibi by Savannah Stuart.

Scott got into a fair amount of trouble as a teenager, but now he’s grown and runs a respectable auto body shop. Unfortunately, the sheriff of his town has it out for him, no matter how much he’s cleaned up his act. When he’s accused of a crime he didn’t commit, no one is more surprised than he is when straitlaced Michaela Miller provides him with an alibi. An alibi that’s a complete lie. Determined to find out why his sexy next-door neighbor helped him out, he puts himself in danger of losing something he’d never considered. His heart.

Michaela has been living next to Scott for 7 months but after an initial attempt to talk to him after he moved in she’s kept her distance. She just assumed that Scott wasn’t interested in getting to know her any further.

Scott sees Michaela and he’s speechless. He doesn’t talk much any way but when he’s anywhere near Michaela his tongue gets tied in knots and he can’t seem to get an entire sentence out of his mouth.

One day when Michaela is in Scott’s auto body shop the town sheriff arrives and Michaela ends up giving Scott an alibi. When Scott brings Michaela a thank you gift it is the starting point of their relationship.

I really liked Scott and Michaela together in this story. They have a very sexual but very sweet relationship. Yes, things moved fast but it just worked.

The parts that didn’t work for me in the story was, well, everything else. The Sheriff’s involvement with a grudge against Scott from when he was growing up seemed a good way to get the h & h together, but it didn’t really end up going anywhere. And then the Sheriff’s brother and his grudge against the hero for having a better garage…IDK, it just didn’t work for me. It seemed to me that Scott and Michaela had enough issues to work through with his thoughts on not being good enough for her, etc., that I think the other parts were unnecessary, imho.

Despite the issues I had with it it was still a cute story.

Rating: 3.25 out of 5.

What I Read Last Week

Posted September 27, 2010 by Tracy in Features | 11 Comments

Well it was an interesting week last week to say the least.  This past Tuesday my boss told me that she plans on retiring next July.  This is a huge deal as I work at a church (I know, shocking lol) and finding a new priest is not an easy task. The next 9 months or so are going to be pretty stressful but hopefully we’ll find someone that will be good for the church…as well as someone I can work with! 🙂
Then my oldest brought home her 5 week progress report.  Shoot me.  Shoot me now.  Ug.  It was horrible to say the least – so there will definitely be some changes going on in my house.  One of the biggest issues, I’ve discovered, is that she doesn’t hand in her assignments.  How hard can that be?  She does them – when they are asked for how can she not just get them out and hand them over?  IDK.  Anyway, hopefully we’ll be able to pull her grades up by the first report card.  Cross fingers…and toes…maybe your arms and legs.  Oh, and prayers couldn’t hurt either! lol
As far as reading went it was a strange week there as well.  I’m not sure if my bosses announcement effected what I was reading or not but it really didn’t go as planned.  I felt kind of disconnected and discombobulated and any other “dis” word you can think of. Not that what I read was bad but I had a hard time choosing the next book I wanted to read – my decision making was at its worst. 🙂 Despite that I ended up reading a few pretty good books. Hopefully this week will go a little smoother in the decision making process – I can only hope.

My first read of the week was Hot Finish by Erin McCarthy.  This is book 3 in the Fast Track series.  It was Suzanne and Ryder’s story and was a tension filled reunion story.  Suzanne and Ryder find out after 2 years that they aren’t actually divorced and then they figure out that they love each other and neither really wants to be divorced.  But getting to the point that they can actually be together without fighting, and figuring out their issues was a huge part of the book.  Suzanne had most of the issues and while I understood her feelings on some things I still got annoyed with her at times.  3.75 out of 5

Second up was Black Heart by Tracy Cooper-Posey.  This is book 2 in the Guns ‘n’ Lovers series and I liked it.  The story focuses – more or less – on Minnie who has escaped Vistaria after the revolution but still believes that her love, Duardo, who was shot and assumed dead, is still alive.  She refuses to believe he is dead and returns to Vistaria only to be captured by an evil man, Zalaya.  This was a great story.  It continues the story of Nick and Calli from book 1, their relationship and their movements to reclaim Vistaria.  Tracy has a great way of blending the romance in with the different aspects of the story and it was very well done. 4 out of 5

Next up was Blue Knight by Tracy Cooper-Posey.  This is book 3 in the same series as above and furthers the story of Vistaria.  I’ll be posting my review for this one on Wednesday so check back. 🙂  4.5 out of 5

Next was my DIK reading challenge book for September – Dreaming of You by Lisa Kleypas.  This was a great story about a country woman and the non-typical hero/gentleman’s club owner that she falls in love with.   Good stuff.  You can read my review here. 4.25 out of 5

Next was a book that I read for The Book Binge called A Gentleman’s Savior by Charlene Roberts.  The story was about a woman who paints a picture of a man who ends up being her husband from a previous life.  She goes back in time but discovers that she hadn’t lived long while married to Gabriel as she had been shot and killed.  Now she has to stop her own death and decide to stay in the present or go to the past and finish living that life.  Good book.  4 out of 5

Next was another story for The Book Binge called Tempting Alibi by Savannah Stuart.  This was the story of neighbors who have both been wanting to be with the other but neither has made a move for the past 7 months.  From opposite sides of the tracks while growing up the two start a relationship after Michaela becomes Scott’s alibi.  3.25 out of 5

Another book for The Book Binge was Shattered Glass by AC Katt.  This was an m/m book about friends who start a rock band.  Two of the members – one who is much younger and was practically raised by the other – fall in love but are torn apart by a man bent on revenge.  This was an incredibly emotionally draining book.  The two men go through complete hell but then it’s all A-ok by the end of the book. I didn’t care for the story, unfortunately, and really didn’t care if the characters got back together or not.  In the end, not my kind of book. 2 out of 5

My Tracy’s TBR challenge book for the week was Nice Girls Don’t Have Fangs by Molly Harper.  This is the story of a small town librarian who is fired from her job, shot and killed and turned into a vampire all in one day.  The story follows her trials in her first few months of being a vampire as well as the mystery behind someone who’s out to get her.  Cute book.  A lot of inner thought and tangents that I couldn’t get into, but cute. 3 out of 5

My last book for the week was another romance book based on a true story.  This was Hard to Hold by Julie Leto and follows Michael and Anne’s romance.  The road is not an easy one for the couple but they manage despite the obstacles.  I’ll be posting my review on Friday…along with a giveaway so check back. 4 out of 5

Excerpt: Power Unleashed by Savannah Stuart

Check out an excerpt from Power Unleashed by Savannah Stuart, book 3 in the Miami Scorcher series.

____________________

Paz stared into the greenest eyes she’d ever seen and tried to concentrate on his words instead of his sinfully sexy voice. There was the slightest trace of an accent, but she couldn’t place it. No, Adam Tucker most certainly wasn’t a jackass Neanderthal. He was approachable and sexy to boot. And that little dimple that appeared in his left cheek every time he spoke was going to drive her crazy. Not to mention the sleek, muscular lines of his forearms and broad shoulders straining against his shirt. Things she should not be noticing. She needed to keep her distance. And more importantly, keep her cool.

“My pack lived in a very tight community, but I’m sure you’re already aware of that. Somehow Morales poisoned our water system with silver. Not with copious amounts at first. I think he must have started small to weaken us. I don’t really know much after that though. I’ve been informed that he killed most of the pack and only kidnapped some of us, but that’s not from first-hand knowledge. I woke up in a lab with ten other wolves. By the time Perez and his doctor were finished…” She didn’t finish because she didn’t need to. He knew only two of them walked out of that lab.

“Do you know what he did with the other bodies?”

Swallowing hard, she shook her head. She’d watched too many of her packmates slowly die—writhing in agony from all the injections and experimentation. If she thought about it too long, she knew she’d fall into a pit of depression and she couldn’t allow that to happen. Not until Morales was caught. Only then could she grieve.

“Do you know what he was doing with your blood?”

Again she shook her head. As the questions continued she tried to compartmentalize her thoughts. Where is the human he injected? Were you ever allowed outside? What kind of experiments was he performing? The questions were never ending and her head was starting to hurt. Memories flooded back in a sickening rush. No, she wasn’t allowed outside. She hadn’t seen sunlight in over a year and that disgusting doctor had touched her however and whenever he’d wanted. At least he hadn’t raped her. Paz pressed a hand to her stomach.

Frowning, Adam sat up straighter. “Are you okay?”

No. “I’m fine. Do you think we could finish these questions later?”

He paused, nodded and stood. When he did, he held out his hand to her. She stared dumbly at it until she realized what he wanted. For some reason the thought of touching him scared her, but she placed her hand in his. An unexpected electric zing shot through her like lightning. It coursed up her arm and through her body all the way to the knot in her stomach.

She met his gaze and what she saw there startled her. It was lust. Plain and simple. That surprised the hell out of her. Tucker had such a reputation for being scary, but maybe the way he got his information from she-wolves was by seducing them. She yanked her hand away and wrapped her arms around herself. “I think you should wait to question Shea. She had a worse time of it than me and it’s too crowded for her right now. Question her tomorrow morning. I’ll bring her over to your house.” It came out like an order. As she spoke she realized it was stupid to bark orders at him of all wolves, but she couldn’t help it. She was worried about her friend and the truth was, Paz had lost a lot of her social skills and couldn’t seem to rein in her big mouth.

His eyebrows snapped down as he regarded her, but he nodded. “That’s fine. Make it early and maybe we can go for a run in the morning.”

The request startled her. “Oh ah…okay.”

His gaze softened on her face as he held open the door for her. She couldn’t help but wonder what the hell was wrong with him. He was an enforcer. Why was he being so nice?

He cleared his throat and suddenly looked nervous as they stepped inside. “Would you mind introducing me to everyone?”

“I don’t exactly know everyone either.”

“All right. Want me to refill your drink then?” He plucked her wineglass from her hand without waiting for a response.

She frowned at him. She hated that her insides had turned to mush around him since he was no doubt trying to use her. “I don’t know what this nice guy routine is, but I know who you are and why you’re here so if you think you can seduce me for whatever reason, you’re out of your mind. And you better not think you can try that crap with Shea.”

His emerald eyes darkened until they were practically black. He leaned closer until he was inches from her ear. She tried to ignore his earthy scent but found it impossible with his hot breath against her neck. “I do want to fuck you, long and hard, but not for any other reason than I want you. For the record, I haven’t been with a woman—wolf or human—in over two decades.” He shoved the glass back into her hand before stalking away.

Like a mute, she stood there staring after his very tight backside. Well, shit.
