What Are You Reading? (534)

Casee: I’m on a Kristen Ashley binge right now. I’m reading Rock Chick Renegade and Knight, both by Kristen Ashley. I honestly don’t know how I can keep doing this. I never usually read more than two KA’s in a row. It’s a shit show, people. I can’t stop. I’m also still reading Looking Inside by Beth Kery.

I’m listening to Magic Binds by Ilona Andrews. Yep, still haven’t finished it. I hope to finish it by the end of this month.

Holly: I finally read some historicals this week. At the recommendation of a friend I read My Darling Duke by Stacy Reid, a new-to-me author. The end was a little flowery for my tastes, but I can’t deny I enjoyed it. I purchased several of her other books and plan to read them soon.

I read Marry in Scarlet by Anne Gracie at Ames’ urging, then The Perfect Rake, after I asked Tracy for another Gracie title.

I also read the novella Blind Date with a Book Boyfriend by Lucy Eden, another rec from Ames. It was super cute. I highly recommend it.

I’m starting Scandalous Scotsman by MJ Fields today.

What Are You Reading? (533)

Casee: I’m reading Rock Chick Renegade by Kristen Ashley. I’m really liking this series. It’s so over the top, but still super funny. I’m also still reading Looking Inside by Beth Kery.

Im listening to Magic Binds. I am so in love with this series. I can’t believe I’m already on the ninth book.

Holly: We missed last week, so here are my reads for the past two weeks. I DNF’d Song of Blood and Stone by L. Penelope just over the halfway mark. I was liking it early on, but then it turned kind of weird (trucks and cars in what I thought was a fantasy world, etc). I might try the second book in the series. I read The Malediction Trilogy by Danielle L. Jensen. Stolen Songbird, book 1, was really good. I liked the premise and the politics and intrigues. I didn’t enjoy book 2, Hidden Huntress, quite as much, but I liked Warrior Witch, the third and final book. Interestingly, I actually came to like the main character less in each book. I would still recommend the trilogy for the world and secondary characters.

I read and listened to Wishing for a Highlander by Jessi Gage. It was just okay. I liked the premise and the hero, but the wishy-washy heroine and over-the-top villainous characters worked against it. I started the second book, The Wolf and the Highlander, but quickly set it aside when I realized one of the villains from the first book was the heroine of the story. I may come back to it later once I have some space from her actions in the first book.

Aside from that I re-read several novels by Kristen Ashley (Rock Chick Reawakening, Rock Chick Regret, Games of the Heart and Golden Trail), Crush the King by Jennifer Estep to refresh my memory before I reviewed it with Ames and listened to Wildfire by Ilona Andrews. I am planning to read Brass Carriages and Glass Hearts by Nancy Campbell Allen next, I just haven’t gotten to it yet.

What Are You Reading? (532)

Casee: I’ve read so many books in the last week that I don’t know what to do with myself. I just finished Rock Chick by Kristen Ashley last night. I’m going to start the next book in the series today. I’m also reading Forever Only Once by Carrie Ann Ryan. This is my first book by this author and I’m not sure how I feel about it. I’m about halfway through and it’s kind of boring tbh.

I’m listening to Magic Binds by Ilona Andrews. I just adore the narrator. Adore her. This is the ninth book in the series and I’m so sad that I’m almost done with it.

Holly: I didn’t get much reading in this week. I wanted to read, but I didn’t have a lot of time. I read Dream Maker by Kristen Ashley, then reread Complicated and Fairytale Come Alive. I’m about halfway through Song of Blood and Stone by L. Penelope. It’s been sitting in my TBR pile for ages. It’s a little slow going, but I like the world. I plan to read Brass Carriages and Glass Hearts by Nancy Campbell Allen next.

What Are You Reading? (531)

Casee: I have been on a reading binge this last week. I’ve read/listened to six books in June so far and we’re only halfway through the month. It’s like a Christmas miracle in June. I’m on a Kristen Ashley binge right now. I read Quiet Man and Dream Maker which are the first two books in KA’s Dream Team series. Of course after reading those two, I had to start the Rock Chick series. I read Rock Chick Reawakening, the prequel and now I’m reading Rock Chick. I’ve also been glomming Shannon McKenna this last week. I’ve been reading her Hellhound Brotherhood series. It’s just so-so. I’m on the third book which is called Hellbent.

I’ve been listening to the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews on audio nonstop. I adore this series. I listened to Magic Breaks and was blown away. It’s definitely my favorite in the series. I’m now reading Magic Shifts, which is the eighth book in the series.

Holly: I finished The Rise of the Phoenix by Mason Sabre. It was just okay. I enjoyed the story, but not the writing. I don’t think I’ll be continuing on. I asked for PNR/UF/F recommendations on Twitter and read Cupcakes, Trinkets and Other Deadly Magics by Meghan Ciana Doidge as a result. It was just okay. I feel like the series can be great with a little refining, so I’m going to continue on to see how things go. Also thanks to Twitter recs, I read the first three books in the A Court of Thorns and Roses series by Sarah J. Maas. A Court of Thorns and Roses, book 1, was a bit slow in places, but still very engaging. The next two books, A Court of Mist and Fury and A Court of Wings and Ruin were fabulous. Definitely a series worth reading if you haven’t already. I read Sin and Surrender, the final book in K.F. Breene’s Demigods of San Francisco series. Not my favorite end to a series, but still a pretty solid read.

I ended up DNFing Entreat Me by Grace Draven. It’s a Beauty and the Beast retelling, which is generally a favorite of mine, but I wasn’t feeling it. I’ll try to come back to it later. I’m not sure what I’m going to read next. Maybe Pathfinder’s Way by TA White, another Twitter rec.

Rowena: I’m reading much of anything except Korean drama subtitles. I’m just not in the mood to read right now. I thought for sure that I would finally pick up Magic Binds by Ilona Andrews but I’m not even doing that. Maybe this week will be better? We’ll see…when I do finally start reading again, I’ll be reading Magic Binds.

Casee: You guys, I’m still reading the Rossi Crime Family series by J.L. Beck and C. Hallman. I’m reading Tame Me which is book four. When I was reading book three, I promised myself I wouldn’t read any more of the series. I lied to myself. I have no idea why I’m reading the series. I would never recommend these books. It’s a conundrum.

I finished listening to Magic Rises by Ilona Andrews yesterday. I LOVE THIS SERIES. Today I decided to give Echoes in Death by J.D. Robb a try on audio. Yeah, that one is a big no from me. I didn’t like the narrator at all. So now I’m listening to Magic Breaks and I love it, love it, love it.

Holly: I have had no reading time this week. I’m still listening to Entreat Me by Grace Draven. I started Rise of the Phoenix by Mason Sabre on Tracy’s recommendation, but I’ve only read a few pages so far. Hopefully I’ll have some reading time this weekend.

Rowena: It’s been a busy week for me and I haven’t had much reading time so I’m still making my way through Magic Binds by Ilona Andrews. My focus is being split between family stuff, work stuff and trying to keep hold of my sanity through this weird-ass time that we’re living in. But so far, I’m really enjoying Magic Binds and I’m hoping that this coming week will be a lot less chaotic so that I can focus better on the story.
