What Are You Reading? (316)

WAYR-New

Casee: I’ve been really into Lexi Blake lately. Ever since I read Satisfaction, I’ve been glomming her Masters & Mercenaries series. I love the Taggarts and their counterparts. I’m reading Dungeon Royale, which is book 6 in the series. Surprisingly, I’ve been reading the series all out of order. That would usually send my organized brain into chaos, but for some reason, it’s been working.

Holly: I can’t believe it’s Friday already. I had a terrible reading week. I tried to read The Bear Who Loved Me by Kathy Lyons, but I couldn’t get into it. I got through about half before I set it aside. I think I might have a hangup about bear-shifters. I kept picturing Baloo from The Jungle Book while I was reading and that just wasn’t hot. You know?

I started Wild Embrace by Nalini Singh this morning. I somehow completely forgot about it. I’m excited to read something new from her.

Rowena: I’m not reading much right now and I blame that on my binge watch of Shooter. You know, the TV show based on the movie with the same title that was based on a book and stars Ryan Phillippe as Bob Lee Swagger. I liked the movie well enough but boy am I really enjoying the TV show. Like, I’m completely obsessed with it.

I am reading one book but I haven’t gotten that far into it and I’ve been reading it all week. Weird but I’ve been distracted by TV. I’m reading Act Like It by Lucy Parker and will hopefully get Pretty Face by Lucy Parker read right after. That’s all I got for you guys this week. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

What are you reading this week? Any new favorites or books that drove you crazy? Share!

I want to strongly recommend MISTS OF THE SERENGETI by Leylah Attar. Release week sale of $2.99. This is the first book of her’s that I have read and it definitely won’t be my last. I felt like I was in Africa. The writing is exceptional! I could go on and on, but I’ll just say – READ IT!

PS – I watched Shooter, too! Hopefully they will do a season 2.

I actually had a chance to read this week. Woo! And I picked two great books to make it worth my while. First was After the Dark, the start of a new series by Cynthia Eden. It’s about an FBI profiler who was let go in disgrace after it turns out a long time friend was a serial killer. It was action packed, sexy, and interesting.

Then I read Moonshadow by Thea Harrison. I must shamefully admit I had only read the first book in the Elder Races series, not for any good reason (because I loved Dragon Bound) beyond I just never got around to them. I felt like maybe I could jump into the world with this new series instead of just trying to play catch up. I loved it. Sophie was a hoot, and I am 100% sold on this world now. Of course I want to immediately go read the rest of the Elder Races books. 🙂

    • I’m on the fence about reading Eden’s new series. Sometimes her RS works for me, but more often than not I just end up frustrated. I love her PNR, so I may give it a go.

I can’t believe you haven’t read any of the other Elder Races books. Dragon Bound, Oracle’s Moon, Lord’s Fall and Kinked are probably my favorites, but they’re all pretty solid. I hope you go back and read them.

    Some recent reads here ~

    — read and enjoyed A Boy Made of Blocks by Keith Stuart which has a blurb on the cover from Graeme Simsion, author of The Rosie Project. The book is quite British and it took a couple of chapters to get me hooked; I was ultimately engrossed in the story. I recommend it.
    — re-read with pleasure three contemporary romances by Mariana Zapata ~ Kulti, The Wall of Winnipeg and Me, and Wait for It.
    — a re-read (my fourth, perhaps) of Andy Weir’s The Martian: A Novel. I will continue to recommend this book.
    — if you like books about books, short stories, or writing, you might enjoy Am I Alone Here?: Notes on Living to Read and Reading to Live by Peter Orner. It was eminently readable; it’s a book that might be read and deliberated over or read more speedily.
    — One Good Turn by Carla Kelly. I enjoyed this historical romance but be aware that it deals with some heavy topics.
    — two male/male romance shorter works ~ Voyageurs by Keira Andrews and Bound by Amelia Bishop (both are free to Kindle readers)
    — and an excellent male/male fantasy romance: Wolfsong by TJ Klune.

I also read the contemporary romance Finding Your Feet (Toronto Connections) by Cass Lennox. This romance features an asexual heroine and a trans hero, a combination I’ve not previously encountered in a romance. I enjoyed the story and will happily read more by this author.

After reading her short story in the Gambled Away anthology, I picked up The Lotus Palace by Jeannie Lin and loved it. It’s a romance/mystery set in the Tang Dynasty (800 AD) in China. For anyone looking for historical romance with a different setting, I highly recommend it. I’m really looking forward to the next book in the series, The Jade Temptress.
