What Are You Reading? (300)

WAYR-New

Casee: I read Apprentice in Death by J.D. Robb which was the best In Death book I’ve read in quite some time. Eve is my favorite female character aside from Elena Deveraux (Guild Hunter series). She kicks ass. It was quite a different storyline than I’m used to with the killers not being up close and personal.

I’m now reading Leopard’s Fury by Christine Feehan. I’ve gotten into it, but it has her usual high-handed hero in it. It’s something that is normal in Feehan’s books so it’s not taking away from the story, but it’s still annoying. I’m not that far into it. I expect to finish it in the next day or two. My reading has been really slow this month. I’ve only read two books and we’re halfway through the month. Unbelievable.

Holly: I read Rock Chick Revolution this week. I started it when it was first released but quickly set it aside when I realized the author had inserted herself into the story. Literally. In the book an author named Kristen Ashley wrote books about all the Rock Chicks. As in, the books we, her real-life readers, read. Beginning with Rock Chick and ending with, you guessed it, Rock Chick Revolution. I…can’t even with that. I ended up going back to it because I was curious how it ended. It was the most ridiculous plot ever, which is kind of a bummer, because I really liked Ally and Ren. I reread a couple books aside from that, but otherwise didn’t get much reading in.

Rowena: My reading is slowly picking up so I’ll take it. This week I read The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins (good even though one of the main characters made me want to kick her throughout most of the book) and The Boy is Back by Meg Cabot. That book was another lighthearted contemporary book that I enjoyed quite a bit. I missed those kinds of books from Cabot. Now I’m reading To Love and to Cherish by Lauren Layne because I love this series and couldn’t wait. So far, I’m loving it.

What are you reading this week? Any new favorites or books that drove you crazy? Share!

I’ve had a pretty slow reading week. I read First Star I See Tonight by SEP and enjoyed it; it was probably my favorite SEP book since Natural Born Charmer. I listened to/read the last two Psychic Eye mysteries by Victoria Laurie which were fun, but nothing new or exceptionally interesting. Now I’ve just started Wild Embrace by Nalini Singh.

Not everything worked for me, but none of the things that didn’t worked bothered me so much that I didn’t enjoy the book. I liked the chemistry between the hero and heroine and the humor. I think I’m at the point with SEP that even her better books are going to be ones I like but not love. I guess maybe I’m a little burned out on her voice even at its best. I can enjoy her better books but nothing’s going to make me feel the way Match Me If You Can did.

          • For me, I think it’s the humiliating the heroines in the beginning that I’m just over. I don’t want to read about that stuff anymore. Do they always have to be like Rachel from Dream a Little Dream or Molly from This Heart of Mine or Meg from Call Me Irresistible?

            • When that mattress fell on Meg my head almost exploded. It was supposed to be funny, but seeing a woman that far down on her luck get super humiliated in front of a guy who already hates her doesn’t make me laugh. It just pisses me off.

    • Ooh, I loved Natural Born Charmer. That was such a good one. Too bad I haven’t been able to pick any new books by her since I haven’t enjoyed the last few. *shrugs*

Ooh, Wild Embrace! Happy reading, Celine!

Books I’ve recently read include ~

    — For a challenge at the Joyfully Jay site, I read The Devil Lancer: A Novel of the Crimean War by Astrid Amara. The events in this book took place in the 1850s primarily on the Crimean peninsula which is located in the Black Sea. The peninsula is attached to the Ukraine and is near Russia, Romania, and Turkey. It’s a part of the world that I know little about. I’d describe the story as a blend of historical and paranormal fiction. One of the main characters is a British captain in the Lancers division; the other is a half-Russian, half-English officer who is possessed by a demon. On the plus side, the book is incredibly well researched and it was an easy read. I learned about the Crimean war – the waiting, the boredom, the deaths from disease, cold, and fighting, the poor command. However, it took time for me to understand the story line, and I didn’t feel connected to either character. I’m happy to have read this book, but I don’t think it’s one I’ll be re-reading.
    — the contemporary romance Fully Ignited (Boston Fire Book 3) by Shannon Stacey; it was an enjoyable read. Even though it is the third book in a series, it stands alone well.
    — For my book group, The Foreign Student: A Novel by Susan Choi. It was a gripping read, and I recommend it. The story is set primarily in 1950s Korea and Tennessee.
    — a re-read of the science fiction romance Venomous by Penelope Fletcher
    — Earlier today I finished Radiator Days by Lucy Knisley which I enjoyed. It was different from the other books of hers that I’ve read in that this was a collection rather than one continuous story.
    — I also enjoyed this article which was a lovely read ~ Romance Novels Brought Me Closer To My Mom, Even After She Was Gone by Adam Minter. You can find it here: http://www.bustle.com/articles/179926-romance-novels-brought-me-closer-to-my-mom-even-after-she-was-gone
