Jase Kayrs was the fun brother. The warm, charming, easy-going brother of the vampire leaders. Until he was taken and tortured by demons with their evil mind tricks for nearly five years. Upon his return, he’s dark, violent, and not the man they all thought they knew. Not the man he once was. He’s haunted that the only reason the demons would have let him live was to use him as a weapon against his family—but he can’t figure out when or how he’ll explode. Plus, once again the demons are after Jase with a vengeance…or rather, a female demon he rejected is out to destroy him.
Then the king asks Jase for a favor… a big one. To mate with one of their allies in order to save her. She’s everything that’s good and light in the world… while he’s at home with darkness. Yet he agrees… knowing mating may be the only chance to save them both.
This was one of my favorite books of the series. I adore Jase and Brenna. They are both so damaged and trying heal. While their mating is an arranged one, their feelings for each other are anything but arranged. One of the only things that kept Jase anchored to the real world during his captivity by the demons were Brenna’s paintings. While being tortured, he would see her paintings on the wall and remember what a good soul she had. It was the only thing Jase had to hold onto. Now Brenna is dying and Jase is the only one that can save her.
Brenna was injected with phankite, which is a mineral that is deadly to witches. Although they had successfully kept the mineral under wraps for hundreds of years, the mines have been uncovered and their enemies now know their weakness. Months of blood transfusions are no longer helping. The only thing that may help is mating with a Kayrs vampire and sharing his strength. Jase has nothing to lose and this will only cement the relationship between the Coven Nine and the Realm. It’s only political, you know.
As the eighth daughter to a seventh daughter of a seventh daughter, Brenna has always been somewhat of an oddity. Now there is a comet circling the earth that people think will bring Brenna immense power. Some groups don’t think she should have that power and set forth trying to kill her. Some groups think that she’s the second coming of witches and want her to be their queen. Jase just sees a woman who is sick, but strong. One that won’t give up easily. A woman who will do anything for family, just as he would.
While their contract stated they would live apart, Jase invokes a clause that says Brenna has to come with him because her safety is in jeopardy. They slowly start getting to know each other. They do start falling, but Brenna can see that Jase’s need for revenge will always come before any love he may come to feel for her. That feeling comes to fruition when Brenna asks him not to go after the demons, to stay and help her, but Jase goes anyway. It was pretty heartbreaking to watch what Brenna went through. Jase realizes he loves Brenna, but it’s too late.
Kane thinks that the power that the comet will bring Brenna will potentially let her cure the virus that has infect vampire mates for so many years.
Of course things don’t end like that, but you’ll have to read it to find out what happens. If you haven’t read this series, you are really missing out!
