Distance Between Us
Rowena’s review of The Distance Between Us by Kasie West.

Seventeen-year-old Caymen Meyers studies the rich like her own personal science experiment, and after years of observation she’s pretty sure they’re only good for one thing—spending money on useless stuff, like the porcelain dolls in her mother’s shop.

So when Xander Spence walks into the store to pick up a doll for his grandmother, it only takes one glance for Caymen to figure out he’s oozing rich. Despite his charming ways and that he’s one of the first people who actually gets her, she’s smart enough to know his interest won’t last. Because if there’s one thing she’s learned from her mother’s warnings, it’s that the rich have a short attention span. But Xander keeps coming around, despite her best efforts to scare him off. And much to her dismay, she’s beginning to enjoy his company.

She knows her mom can’t find out—she wouldn’t approve. She’d much rather Caymen hang out with the local rocker who hasn’t been raised by money. But just when Xander’s attention and loyalty are about to convince Caymen that being rich isn’t a character flaw, she finds out that money is a much bigger part of their relationship than she’d ever realized. And that Xander’s not the only one she should’ve been worried about.

After reading On the Fence, I kind of glommed the hell out of Kasie West. I read everything that I could get my hands on and I enjoyed each and every single book that I read by her. This one included.

So this book follows Caymen Meyers, who works in her mother’s porcelain doll shop. There’s not a lot of money in dolls so it’s not surprising that Caymen is poor. When Xander comes into her shop to buy his grandmother a porcelain doll for her birthday, Caymen knows that he’s not poor like her. He’s rich. They should have nothing in common but when Xander keeps coming around, Caymen is helpless. He’s so charming and he’s good company so Caymen looks forward to hanging out with him.

But the longer they hang out, the more Caymen realizes that they may have loads in common but they also belong on opposite ends of the money train. It doesn’t help that Caymen’s mother isn’t a fan of the rich. She thinks that they’re all spoiled brats who think they’re better than everyone and because of this mindset, Caymen finds it hard to bring Xander around his mother which makes things kind of awkward for everyone.

Caymen was an easy person to fall in with. Her sense of humor cracked me up at every turn and her relationship with Xander was too cute. She isn’t this cookie cutter protagonist that could be any one, she had a unique personality that I thought was adorable and too funny.

Xander was a lot of fun. He was kind of a jack of all trades and I really enjoyed getting to know him through Caymen’s thoughts because like Caymen, I was completely charmed by him. I loved the thought he put into his field trips with Caymen and I loved how excited he was on Caymen’s field trips. He was an all-around good guy and I adored the hell out of him.

I thought Xander and Caymen complimented each other really well and was only too glad to see Tic go on his merry way. One of the things that I really liked about this book was that Xander didn’t have the clichéd rich family who thought that Caymen was beneath them because she lived over her mother’s doll shop. I loved the way that they embraced Caymen and that it was Caymen’s mother who didn’t approve of Xander. It was a nice change up from the norm.

This was an easy book to fall into. The characters were charming, the storyline moved at a nice pace and the writing was pretty fantastic. I am a total Kasie West fangirl and this book only added to my love of her. I definitely recommend.

WTF Cover Saturday (68)

Posted May 31, 2014 by Holly in Features | 0 Comments

I saw this book while I was out with my husband last weekend and it reminded me how much I loved it back in the day. I’m pretty sure I didn’t love the cover, though.

pfc WTF

This isn’t the worst cover we’ve ever featured, but I admit I’m sort of appalled at the way his shirt hangs open. Hello, this is a Young Adult novel. She’s 15! That’s an awful lot of manflesh for a 15 year old to be looking at.

(Okay, being honest? He’s kind of dreamy. Maybe back in the day I did love this cover. shame face)

What Are You Reading? (203)

Holly: This was a short week but it felt like it drug out forever. My husband and I spent last weekend on a romantic getaway. We went to the beach, saw a ballgame and relaxed. It was heavenly. Unfortunately for my reading, I spent this week playing catch up.

I read parts 7 and 8 of The Kraken King by Meljean Brook. The end of part 7 nearly made my head explode,  so it’s good I had part 8 already loaded and ready to go. I may have died otherwise.  What? It could happen. Probably.

Today I started Oracle’s Moon by Thea Harrison.  I was thinking of a certain scene, but when I opened the book to search for it I got sucked into the story. I plan to start Pia Saves the Day when I finish.  I’m looking forward to it. I really enjoy Harrison’s novellas.

That’s all from me. What are you reading this week?

Assassin. Soldier. Arrow. That is who Vasic is, who he will always be. His soul drenched in blood, his conscience heavy with the weight of all he’s done, he exists in the shadows, far from the hope his people can almost touch—if only they do not first drown in the murderous insanity of a lethal contagion. To stop the wave of death, Vasic must complete the simplest and most difficult mission of his life.

For if the Psy race is to survive, the empaths must wake…
Having rebuilt her life after medical “treatment” that violated her mind and sought to suffocate her abilities, Ivy should have run from the black-clad Arrow with eyes of winter frost. But Ivy Jane has never done what she should. Now, she’ll fight for her people, and for this Arrow who stands as her living shield, yet believes he is beyond redemption. But as the world turns to screaming crimson, even Ivy’s fierce will may not be enough to save Vasic from the cold darkness…

The PsyNet is collapsing. It’s being tainted and eaten up by a infection that’s turning Psy crazy since the fall of Silence and the effected Psy are killing humans and changelings.

Kaleb Krychek is desperate to save the Psy and comes up with a plan that has the Psy with the E designation being the saviors of their race. He collects E’s and brings them to SnowDancer property to try and train under the protection of the Arrows. Each Arrow has their own E to protect and in Vasic’s case that E is Ivy Jane.

From the first moment that Ivy sees Vasic she feels a pull to him. He’s closed off, sure, but that doesn’t stop her from seeing under the cold exterior into the heart of the man that he’s tried to hide for many years.

Vasic is taken with Ivy in a way he’s never been with a woman before. From the time he was 4 he was trained to be an Arrow but under the cold exterior lies the heart of a man that definitely feels. He wants to protect the Psy and will do all in his power to do so but his first priority becomes Ivy as he falls more in love with her each day.

The E’s are n’t prepared for the gruesome, bloody scenes they see that increase daily, but they must find a way to stop the contagion from growing and taking over the minds of all Psy.

Wow. Just…wow. I’m not even sure I can voice how much I loved this book. I thought that seeing Kaleb Krychek crack in the last book was amazing, and it was, don’t get me wrong, but seeing cold, I-only-follow-orders Vasic falling in love was amazing.

I’ve known throughout the series that there was so much more to Vasic than we saw. He was a man under all of that control and one that cared about people in his own Arrow way. He was wholly unprepared for what he saw in and felt for Ivy but he didn’t shy from it or run from it as I expected him to. He was a wonderful hero and I loved reading about him.

Now Ivy, she was such the opposite of Silence I don’t think there was a word for it. The fact that she lived through the rehabilitation that they forced on her showed how incredible this woman was. I loved her forthrightness despite her shyness with Vasic and the fact that she didn’t back down even when he tried to shut her out on occasion. She was absolutely the perfect heroine for him.

The story, with it’s ups, downs, ins, outs and twists was a pleasure to read, as are all of Singh’s books. She knows how to weave the romance into the overall story arc and I adore her writing. I’m constantly amazed at how this author’s mind works! Singh’s books are definitely nothing ordinary – more like extraordinary.
