Since the loss of her fiancé, Lydia Cross has refused to allow herself to feel anything close to love. That is until corporate hotshot Jacob Hay comes to her aid outside of the Danvers International corporate headquarters and captures her attention. Too bad he doesn’t show any signs of reciprocating her feelings.

Things change when, after a rowdy Vegas bachelorette party, she wakes up next to Jacob...as his newly wedded wife! Lydia is stunned, but Jacob seems remarkably calm and isn’t inclined to end their hasty merger. In fact, day by day he gives her everything she’s been missing—especially in bed. But when the magic of Sin City fades, Lydia grows concerned she’ll find herself alone once again...

Lydia wakes up with a righteous hangover and is confused when she finds a man in her bed.  Of course she soon discovers that it’s not her bed and not only is he a man, he’s her husband.  Surprise!  Lydia immediately starts talking to Jake about a divorce but he’s not so sure he wants one.

After a few days of being back in the real world, Jake and Lydia talk.  Jake tells her that his baby mamma is giving him grief and holding custody of his six-year-old daughter over his head if he doesn’t marry her.  He has no desire to marry her but he can’t seem to get that out of her head.  He asks Lydia if they can stay married longer so that he can get Chris off his back.  She agrees but then they begin a sexual relationship that soon turns into more.  Each of them have their issues, however, and neither are sure that it will all work out permanently in the end.

This was a cute book.  I always love the waking up in Vegas married trope.  It just always adds a nice twist to things and forces the people to deal with each other. Well most of the time, that is. In this case it seemed like Jake was happy about the marriage from minute one and Lydia was confused about that.  He seemed all in at times but then when they got series he ran like a man being chased by a zombie. Lol  Luckily it all worked out in the end.

Now, the characters, quite frankly, weren’t my cup of tea.  Sure they were nice enough something about them rubbed me the wrong way.  Jake was a really nice guy but at times was completely oblivious.  He also, from the start of the book, seemed really cheesy to me.  IDK what it was but whenever he talked to Lydia and called her sweetheart or honey I always pictured him with his shirt hanging open and the gold chains hanging. Lol  I couldn’t think of him as hot even though EVERY woman in the book was lusting after him – even when they had their own men.  Lydia was a nice enough person as well but kind of boring.  She needed to be forthright with Jake and ended up more milquetoast. Then there was Chris – the baby mamma.  She was supposed to be this horrible person that plagued Jake right and left but we only saw it a couple of times and then she decided to play nice with Jake and Lydia.  Sure Jake was worried about losing custody of his daughter but it didn’t seem as bad as he had said in the beginning.

Overall it was a decent book but was pretty…sedate.  I wanted more heat and more conflict but it just wasn’t there for me, unfortunately. While this didn’t work well for me it might work for you if you like the Danvers series and have read every book.  I’ve only read a couple in the series and wasn’t invested in ALL of the characters/couples that they were talking about and didn’t have that emotional connection I think the author was hoping for.

Review: Fighting for You by Sydney Landon

Fighting for You
Rowena’s review of Fighting for You (Danvers #4) by Sydney Landon.

Ella Webber has spent years uncomfortable around the opposite sex…
But as soon as she meets handsome Declan Stone, she is smitten. Quickly they become friends, finding frequent reasons to see each other around the office, and Ella longs for even more. So-with a little help from her friends-Ella resorts to performing a little seduction. One that Declan will never be able to resist.

Burdened by emotional baggage from his time in the army, Declan refuses to believe he’s the right man for sweet Ella. Even if she makes him long for normal things, like marriage and family….But in his attempts to close off his heart from her love, could he have underestimated Ella’s powers of persuasion?

This is the fourth book in the Danvers series by Sydney Landon. I haven’t read any of the other books in this series but when this book came across my radar, it sounded like something I’d enjoy so I picked it up.

This book is about Ella Webber and Declan Stone coming together in love.  They both work together at Danvers and they struck up a friendship that has become more meaningful to the both of them.  Ella has a crush on Declan and he knows it but he’s going through some issues from his time in the military, things that he hasn’t completely dealt with and he feels like he can’t give Ella what she deserves so he keeps her at a distance.  Only thing is, Ella doesn’t want distance.  She wants Declan and if he wants a girl with more experience then she’s going to get that experience.  She’ll do whatever she needs to if in the end, she’ll get Declan.

This book had a lot going for it but over the course of the book, I couldn’t help but want more from the story.  I wanted more from the story, more from the characters and it was while I was reading this book that I missed romances of old that had me all twisted in knots over what was happening.  When I first started reading books, I was reading books by Judith McNaught, Julie Garwood and Linda Howard.  Those authors really packed in the angst and even though there were times when I wanted something a little lighter to read, at the end of the day my favorite stories were the stories that broke my heart and mended it right back up in the midst of one story.  I feel like these days, I get more of the light and fluffy books that I enjoyed but won’t ever remember after years have passed.

And that’s how this book is.  It’s light and fluffy and the story is good but for me, it doesn’t have that long standing power that I want when I read a story.  Declan was fine as a hero, as was Emma.  But I closed this book wanting more from the book.  I’m not even sure that I could tell you what more I wanted.  I just closed this book feeling unfulfilled and I was ready to move on fairly quickly.

So this is my review.  This book is good.  It’s got a solid cast of characters and a main couple that made me smile but that’s it.  It’s just good.

Grade: 2.5 out of 5

Beth has always lived in her outgoing sister’s shadow, plagued by her own insecurity about her body. It’s time for her to step out from the sidelines and experience what life has to offer—then she’s laid off from her teaching job, and has to rely on her sister to get her a job at Danvers International. Nick Merimon is gorgeous, wealthy, and a well-known playboy—just the sort of man Beth has always avoided. But even she can’t deny the sparks that are flying between them. He could be just the man to show her what she’s been missing all these years. And after they share one heart-stopping night together, she is surprised when it leads to a relationship. But as their connection grows, and the realities of their romance begin to show, Beth will have to overcome both her own insecurities and her doubts about Nick’s intentions if she’s ever going to find lasting happiness…

Beth finds out she’s pregnant after sleeping with Nick Merimon for months. She’s determined to raise the baby herself as she knows that Nick will be no help and will probably run when she tells him about the pregnancy. Beth sees Nick as a player even though he’s practically living with Beth. Nick is shocked about the pregnancy but is actually really excited. He wants to marry Beth and find a house together and she isn’t going for that at all. Nick needs to make her see and believe that he wants to be with her for the long haul and that takes a lot of work.

Beth was overweight when she was younger has eating issues because of her parents who were incredibly critical of her weight. She lost 100 pounds by skipping meals and eating very minimally. When she finds out she’s pregnant she doesn’t really think bout the weight gain until she finds out A) that she’s pregnant with twins and B) her pants don’t close any longer. She then takes it upon herself to make an effort to stay at the same weight – she lies about what and when she’s eaten, she hides food and skips meals constantly. When there’s a problem with the babies she soon gets a reality check but will it be enough to break her out of her self-induced food prison?

I think the overall story in this book was good. Having read a little bit about Beth and Nick in the previous book I was prepared for the pregnancy and was actually quite happy for the both of them. Nick, though he seemed like a player to Beth, was a really great guy and proved it time and time again. My issues with this book lie entirely with Beth. She was selfish, bitchy, sneaky, rude at times and I just didn’t like her. She was accusing Nick of being a player but she was the one who was on a dating site and going out on dates behind Nick’s back. I just wanted to smack her for most of the book. Now I understand that there are many women, and men for that matter, with eating disorders so that part of the story didn’t bother me so much, except when it pertained to her health and the health of her babies – then, again, I wanted to smack her.

I think if the story had been stronger that I may have given this one a higher rating because the story would have made up for Beth’s lack, but unfortunately while story was good, it wasn’t great. I do want to read what happens next in the series as I’m anxious to see what happens with Ella and Declan’s characters.

What I Read Last Week

Posted November 18, 2013 by Tracy in Features | 0 Comments

Hey there!

Another week has passed and it was not a boring one around Tracyland this time.

First my oldest got sick on Veteran’s Day (last Monday) with a stomach virus and continued to be sick all week long. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone throw up that much in my life. I took her to the doc on Monday (she got sick over the weekend) but had to take her back yet again on Thursday because she was so dehydrated, etc. She’s finally back to her old self – it’s amazing how fast kids bounce back!

Second, on Wednesday night I wasn’t paying attention and ran into the end of a door. No big – sore toe, put ice on it, went to bed. I woke up the next morning with half my foot bruised looking like I had elephantitis. After a visit to the doc (we went to the doc a lot last week!) I found I had a broken toe. Not only that but one that’s in a really odd place and now I’m on crutches for two weeks. When I go back to get an x-ray if it’s not healed properly I’ll have to have a pin put in it. OMG! All this just cuz I was stupid and didn’t pay attention to where I was going! Ug. I have to laugh but it still pisses me off. LOL

Don’t forget I’ve got the Fall in Love With Forever Giveaway going. You can enter the rafflecopter here if you haven’t already. It’s a prize pack of 6 books so check it out.

Alright, on to what I read last week:

My first read was The Seduction of Lady Phoebe by Ella Quinn. This story was about Marcus who drunkenly makes a move on Phoebe who he thinks he’s in love with, but she gives him a bloody nose and a piece of her mind. Cut to 8 years later and Marcus is back in England and still wants Phoebe. She wants nothing to do with him but she can’t deny her attraction to him. The story is about their courtship and includes a villain, of course. 😉 3.25 out of 5

Next was a freebie called An Intrepid Trip to Love by Charlie Cochet. The story revolves around Trip. Trip knows that Boone is his mate and has known for 20 years but it’s forbidden to mate with any Enforcer – Boone’s an enforcer. They can’t keep away from each other any longer and soon mate…and the shit hits the fan. This was just an adorable story. I thought it was sweet and funny and I really liked it. 4 out of 5

Jagged by Kristen Ashley is the 5th book in the Colorado Mountain series. Zara and Ham have an on again off again relationship until Zara calls it quits. Three years later they start up again and this is their story. I’ll post my review of this one on Thursday. 3 out of 5

Her Wolf by Rebecca Royce has Ashlee who thinks she’s crazy – literally – and Tristan who is a wolf shifter who has a spell put on him and put into a zoo. He starts talking to Ashlee telepathically and she thinks she’s really gone off the deep end. She is really just his mate and rescues him from the zoo. Turns out she’s a shifter too and is introduced to his family but a curse that his family thought was eradicated came back and now Tristan wants to kill Ashlee. This was a good story. It was the first in the Westervelt Wolves series and was a decent read. 3 out of 5

I’ll Be Home For Christmas by Jessica Scott is a novella about Vic Carponti and his wife Nicole. They are a couple that was introduced in the first book of the Coming Home series. This takes us back in time to 2007 when Vic is getting deployed. He’s been deployed before but this one is different as not only are his friends getting hurt but he is too. The story centers around the deep love that Vic and Nicole have for each other and it was great. 4 out of 5 I’ll post my review this week.

Fall For Me by Sydney Landon starts with Beth announcing to her sister that she’s pregnant. She’s slept with Nick but expects nothing from him as she sees him as a player. She plans to raise the baby by herself. Nick is having none of it and plans to marry Beth. Beth also has severe eating issues. She lost 100 pounds – not the healthy way – and now that she’s pregnant she fears gaining it all back. I understood Beth and her eating disorder but I really didn’t like her and that brought the rating on this book waaaay down even though Nick was pretty darned great. 3 out of 5 (read for Book Binge)

Next was A Duchess in the Dark by Kate McKinley. This was a short story about Daphne who is determined to sleep with the man she thinks she’s in love with so that her brother-in-law can’t naysay the engagement. She gets in the wrong bed though and when the duke finds out it’s Daphne he slept with he can’t marry her fast enough – she protests. This was very cute but didn’t have a whole lot of meat to it, being so short. 3 out of 5

Last for the week was Taming a Wild Scot by Rowan Keats. The story has Ana being saved by Niall from certain death as she’s in a dungeon accused of murder. Months later Niall uses her to try and clear his family name and get their lands back. I thought it was a good medieval story and will post my review of this one soon. This is Keats’s first novel. 4 out of 5

Suzy Denton seems to have it all together. She loves her job as an event’s planner for Danvers International, and she loves her high school sweetheart and fiance Jeff. Fast forward a month and it’s all gone to hell in a hand-basket. She finds out Jeff’s dentist has been doing more than drilling his teeth, and Danvers is in the process of merging with Mericom creating the largest communications company in the US and also bringing Gray Merimon, the CEO of Mericom into her life.

Gray pursues her from almost their first meeting. Even though he looks like sex on a stick, Suzy is afraid of being hurt again, and she thinks Gray is just another stuffed shirt looking for a relationship. When he calls her bluff, Suzy agrees to one night of sex, hoping that he will be terrible in bed and she can finally get him out of her system.

When circumstances throw them together for more than one night, can Gray convince Suzy that two complete opposites can be a perfect fit?

Gray has had feelings for Suzy for a while but Suzy isn’t interested – at least that’s what she tells him. She’s secretly got the hots for him as well. When he moves to Myrtle Beach (where she lives) he’s determined to get her permanently. The most that Suzy agrees to is a date. When they’re on the date, however, they come to the conclusion that they should just sleep together and get the itch out of their systems. Of course Gray is just humoring Suzy as he has no plans to let her go. Unfortunately before they can go far an unfortunate accident has Suzy laid up with a broken ankle and lots of scrapes, bumps and bruises. Gray sets her up in the house he buys for them and Suzy finally admits she loves Gray. They are on their way to their HEA when a woman from Gray’s past stirs up trouble and has Suzy doubting in their “meant to be.”

In this story we don’t have romance so much as Suzy seeing what a wonderful person due to his actions and the care he takes of Suzy while she’s laid up. He really is very sweet and even I was impressed with his devotion. Suzy is reluctant to admit her feelings at first because of her previous boyfriend who cheated on her but even she sees that she held herself back from that relationship. She eventually finds that she wants to give Gray everything.

Then there was Reva. Reva was a girl who Gray went on a couple of dates with and then slept with while he was trying to tell himself that he really didn’t want Suzy. This was BEFORE they started dating but Reva has been stalking him for months. After Suzy finds out about it she decides that they are going to get rid of Reva together. When they see her though she says that the baby bump she’s sporting it Gray’s. He’s floored and Suzy leaves him in Charleston to deal with Reva as she thinks he needs to think things over. Now, I’m not saying that this was a bad idea but I thought that Gray needed to show more attention at that point to Suzy than to Reva. Yes, he should have shown concern for her – especially if she actually was having his child but the way he treated Suzy after that pissed me off so badly I had a hard time with it. After the tenderness and devotion he’s shown Suzy before, the fact that he actually blew her off later in the story (his claims that it was too late at night was complete BS to me) put him in the major doghouse. The eventual explanation from different characters was just not enough for me at that point.

The story was cute and a decent read but unfortunately had a hero I couldn’t love and that brought the rating way down.
