Lauren Dane‘s de la Vega Cats series is one of my favorites. When she offered to share an excerpt of Beneath the Skin, the latest installment, I was thrilled.

He didn’t bustle in. Didn’t barge or storm. No, Gibson de La Vega seemed to melt into the space. How he did that and still managed to be a total badass she had no idea. But it made her a little dizzy. He moved like a male on a mission, his gaze taking in every corner, every place anyone could be standing or hiding.
But when that assessing gaze caught on hers, it was like everything held its breath for a moment. She had to gulp at the immensity of the way he looked at her. It was more than the usual shifter gaze. This male was big and dangerous, but hot damn was he delicious.
That gaze moved from her face down to the place where her leg had been doctored up. He frowned, moving to her. “Are you all right? Shouldn’t you be resting?”
She shrugged, fighting shyness she didn’t know the origin of. “I’m fine. I’ll be healed tomorrow. Missed the bone and all major arteries.”
“It’s not acceptable.”
It was a laugh that surprised her then. She couldn’t help it. He was offended by how she healed?
“Well, that’s tough. It’s how I heal.”
That gaze again, those deep brown eyes boring a hole right through her defenses. “The getting-shot part. Not the healing part. Silver is hard on even the fittest shifters.”
“Oh.” She wiped sweaty palms down the front of her jeans, wincing when she got near the wound. “They didn’t use it. It was 9mm ammo. No silver.”
He cocked his head. “I wonder why that would be?”
Dario shifted. “What’s their game?”
“A good question for our prisoner. Where is he?”
“Here.” She indicated the closet. “He’s in there.”
“Can you lock up? I don’t want anyone wandering in. I need to…question him.” He did stalk this time, right up to the closet.
She threw the locks on the one door she’d left open. She’d closed up shop a few minutes before, not wanting to have to explain why they had someone tied up and held in a broom closet.
She was steady. Alert. Holding herself together well. He couldn’t imagine too many other shifters who’d be doing so well after being shot.
Admirable.
And even so, Gibson seethed with rage. It wasn’t something he did very often. But the very idea that this female had been injured by anyone, much less this trash of Bertram’s, was offensive beyond the pale. Shifters didn’t go to war with other shifters. Not now when they faced such big outside threats. They should be standing together, not shooting women. Not harming this woman.
Her brother, that much was easy to deduce given the strong resemblance, nodded his way. “I’m Drew.”
He didn’t hold a hand out though. He showed his neck and averted his gaze, accepting Gibson’s dominance. So very unlike his sister in that way it nearly made Gibson smile.
Instead he nodded.
Dario grinned and tipped his chin. “Hey, Drew.” Dario looked back to Gibson. “He’s dating my sister.”
He thought he recognized the face from a few jamboree events of late.
“Let’s get this trash taken out.”
Drew opened the door, and the male jaguar was still tied up but was conscious and pulling at his bonds. Gibson reached in, grabbed the rope and hauled him out, tossing him on the floor nearby. “Who are you and why are you here?”
The jaguar just looked up at him.
Gibson sighed and leaned back against the counter. “I have no plans to scare you with threats. I will shoot you if you don’t answer my questions. That’s not a warning, and it’ll be the only time you hear it before I unload a few bullets into you.”
Fear bled into the guy’s eyes. Good. Fear was useful.
“You shot one of my cats. You also shot me. What’s the purpose here?”
“My name is Hal Pepper. I’m acting on my own.”
Gibson pulled his weapon and clicked the safety off.

Fall in love with the de La Vega cat shifters in this classic paranormal romance from New York Times bestselling author Lauren Dane, a spin-off of the fan-favorite Cascadia Wolves series

The very magick that brought them together now makes them targets…

Kendra Kellog may have found her sister, but she’s still miles away from bringing down the evil mages targeting her family. Max de La Vega is exactly what she doesn’t need at this moment in time—strong, smart and the very definition of alpha.

The next in line to run his jaguar jamboree, Max is used to getting what he wants. Right now, he wants Kendra. More than that, he realizes she needs him—and he’ll do whatever it takes to guarantee her safety.

With evil forces out to siphon her magick, Kendra can’t afford to keep pushing Max away. And for once, Max’s cat and his man are in total agreement: Kendra is his to protect.

This was a really great story, probably my favorite so far of the series. I like the new direction Dane is taking the story. I’m not a super big fan of witches and warlocks usually, but Dane does them very well. They don’t seem woo-woo or B horror flick. They’re every day average people who happen to have magical powers.

Kendra has moved to a new city to be closer to her sister, Renee. Thanks to Renee having two mates, Kendra is drawn into a large extended family. One man in particular stands out to her – Max de la Vega. He’s a strong alpha male who cares about his family and friends, and Kendra seems to have fallen into that group. Unfortunately for both of them, Kendra learned her lesson about strong, dominating men and isn’t interested in starting something with him. Not that Max is letting that stop him…

Max has known Kendra was for him almost since the first. He took some time to get to know her to make sure, but now he’s convinced. He just has to convince Kendra. He can tell she’s wary and figures it has something to do with her past. He’s willing to take it slow, but he’s not willing to walk away.

I liked the way Max and Kendra were with each other. They had more than just sex between them; they had respect and caring. A lot of times with an alpha-male, especially a shifter, he expects his little woman to sit at home barefoot and pregnant, jumping at his every command. Max wasn’t like that. He truly respected Kendra and her opinions, as well as her strength as both a woman and a witch. He wanted her to be safe, yes, but he didn’t feel the need to repress or coddle her. Both Kendra and I appreciated that.

Although the sex scenes were hot, that wasn’t all they had between them. Dane really took the time to develop the romance. I believed that Kendra and Max loved each other because I saw them falling. It was great.

The story arc from the first book, Trinity, is carried over here. Kendra and Renee’s father is still at large and there’s still a group of bad witches after them. I like the Dane moved the storyline forward without sacrificing the romance. I do wish she hadn’t left the end the quite so open. It’s too long to wait for the next book. Dammit.

Overall this was a good blend of paranormal suspense and romance. I enjoyed the secondary characters as much as the romance. I can’t wait for the next installment.

One witch, one cat shifter. Add one wolf. Blend. Safety glasses recommended.

Renee Parcell loves her life. Her smoothie/coffee cart business is successful, and she s deeply in love with her boyfriend, Galen. He makes her laugh, he s gainfully employed, and he satisfies her as only a sexy cat shifter can. He even puts the toilet seat down.

Yet they both sense something in the air. An anticipation that leaves them both unsettled.

Tall, blond and gorgeous Jack Meyers, Enforcer of National Pack and one of the most beautiful men Renee and Galen have ever seen, stumbles into Renee s life and the riddle of their expectation is solved Renee is Jack s mate. What surprises them all is when the three of them touch, magick creates an unexpected triple bond of witch, cat and wolf.

Even as they learn to navigate the steamy intricacies of their bond, a threat looms over Renee. First in the form of resurrected memories, then in the shape of darker magicks someone is aiming at her. Set on stealing her inherent powers even her life.

Renee can stand to lose almost anything, except her mates. But there seems to be no talking them out of laying everything on the line for her "

This is a spinoff of the Cascadia Wolves series. We first meet Jack in that series. He played a rather large roll in Standoff. I wasn’t sure if I was going to like the move away from the wolves, but I wanted to read Jack’s story so I went forward. I’m glad I did. I really enjoyed the opening of a new world of cat shifters and witches.

Renee is a witch with a lot of power – but she doesn’t know it. She’s accepted that she sometimes knows when the phone is going to ring or who will be on the line, but otherwise she thinks she’s pretty normal. She’s been in a relationship with cat shifter Galen de la Vega for several years and they’re blissfully happy together. But when Jack shows up she can’t deny she’s drawn to him as well..and things are changing, whether she wants them to or not.

Jack has been looking for his mate for a long time and he’s thrilled to have found her. He’s less thrilled to see she’s already bonded with a cat. He isn’t going to walk away without exploring things..and they’re all surprised when they realize the three of them are meant to bond. It couldn’t have happened too soon, because a storm is brewing and Renee is right in the center of it. She’ll need both Jack and Galen to help her whether through it.

I enjoyed watching the three of them come together. They had major chemistry, both in bed and out of it. The fact that they learned to lean on one another and take care of one another was wonderful, especially since Renee and Galen had a long established relationship and Jack was new to it.

I was left feeling somewhat dissatisfied at the way Galen and Jack talked over or ignored Renee. She often accused them of treating her like a child, and I definitely felt that. Unfortunately, I didn’t feel like they’d stopped by the end of the novel.

The way Grace acted toward Renee really bothered me, especially considering the way she was treated by Nina in her book. I expected better of her and found I had less respect for her at the end. To hit Renee where it so clearly hurt the most..that was petty and cruel. I don’t think she made up for it in the end, either.

That aside, this was a good read. I breezed through it and couldn’t wait to start the next.
