Life is hard, and sometimes when conflict arises you have to write your own plot twist to pull yourself out of the fray.

Author Robert “Mac” McIntyre is at the library helping out with the Friends of the Library sale when he’s asked to help a buyer with his purchases. They carry the books out to the truck and Mac is instantly smitten by the man named Tommy. He asks Tommy out on a date but Tommy refuses.

Two months later Mac’s agent takes him to a gallery exhibit and Mac is enthralled with the artists’ work. He especially loves a piece that the artist did for one of Mac’s own books and wants to buy it but it’s not for sale. He does some digging to find out where to find the artist, T. Garrett, as the man wasn’t at the exhibit due to a family emergency, and what do you know? He finds that T. Garrett is the Tommy he met at the library two months earlier.

The family emergency that Tommy had was his brother who overdosed and is still in a coma. Tommy has been up for days and everything around him is put by the wayside while he stays at the hospital. Mac decides to help and this includes bringing Tommy food while he stays at the hospital and stealing the key to his house/shop so that he can run it while Tommy’s otherwise occupied. This goes on for days.

When Tommy gets home from the hospital and it looks like his brother will be fine with some serious counseling, he discovers what Mac has done and freaks out – asking Mac to leave as he’s not sure what’s going on and frankly a bit scared. The man he found himself falling for is someone he’s not sure he now knows.

This story was sweet at times and others – just a bit creepy.

Mac was a kind man – I had no doubt of that – but the way he went about “helping” Tommy was so over the top and probably illegal it bordered on disturbing and stalkerish. I knew that it all came from a good place but just taking dinner to Tommy and getting to know him would have been great. The fact that he took over his shop? Rearranged displays and wrote down ideas for future displays? IDK that just rubbed me the wrong way. He was infiltrating himself into a man’s life and he really didn’t know the guy at all. Who does that?

Tommy reacted appropriately to it all, I must say. I was happy to see that he just didn’t say, “Aw, isn’t that sweet,” and move on. He realized it was more than odd and acted properly. He did let Mac back into his life immediately and that was good – they could then get to know each other a bit.

One of the parts of this book also included Mac writing a book that was supposed to get his feelings out – the ones he had for Tommy – after he had met him at the library. Now, Mac didn’t know Tommy from Adam when he was writing but it seemed he was already in love and that didn’t set well with me. Of course when Tommy finds out about the book and how it ends he’s upset and again sends Mac away. Mac being the kind man he is gets Tommy back in a pretty romantic way and weaves the issues with his book around the whole deal. This was pretty ingenious and I liked the way Mac went about reeling Tommy back in to his life.

Overall the book was part sweet and sexy – part strange and unsettling – but it was entertaining.

What I Read Last Week

How do neighbors! How the hell are ya? I’m doing well. I’m getting ready to go on vacation next week and frankly work for vacation is a huge PITA. The amount of work that I have to do before I go – in preparation for when I’m gone – is almost enough to keep me home. I’ve worked here for 13 years and I’ve never been gone for 2 weeks straight because it’s such a PITA. lol I’m sure the vaca will be worth it though.

On to what I read:

I started out the week with Tease by Sophie Jordan. This is a story about Emerson who does a lot of making out with boys but never goes further. Of course her reputation around college is that she’s pretty free with sex. When she gets stuck at a biker bar that she should have never walked in to she’s saved by Shaw who is rough around the edges but ends up having a soft heart. The pair have a tumultuous relationship and Emerson almost succeeds in pushing him away completely. This was a good one and I really liked it. You can read my review here. 4 out of 5

Next up was No Attachments by Tiffany King. This is about Ashton who has lived in Woodfalls for 4 months and loves it. She has a bucket list and is determined to do it all. One of the items is to pick up a random stranger at a bar and have a one night stand. She chooses Nathan who is there in town to find her but she doesn’t know that. They hit it off and both of their plans go awry in the end. A great story that was very good. You can read my review here. 4 out of 5

Snowcroft Lost by Christi Snow is about Jamie who is in love with his best friend Trevor who is straight. Trevor is found unconscious on a trail and when he awakens he has amnesia. He can’t believe it when everyone says he’s straight as he wants nothing more than Jamie. Unfortunately not everyone wants to couple to be together and they’ll do just about anything to keep them apart. This one had lots of great elements to it and many twists and turns to keep me turning pages. You can read my review here. 4 out of 5

Before the Mission Begins by Christi Snow is a prequel in the When the Mission Ends series. It’s to be read in between books 2 & 3 (according to the author) but I happened to get it first so there ya go. The story is about Chris and Julie who meet on a Valentine weekend at Chris’s sisters house. Chris never looked twice at Julie but now that she’s all grown up he can’t stop looking at her. The story is short and sweet and enjoyable. 3.75 out of 5

Where the Horses Run by Kaki Warner is about Josephine Cathcart whose father has spent his money and invested badly and now he wants Josephine to marry money so that he can be saved. She is not really marriage material according to most people as she’s a single mother. Back in 1817 that was a big no-no as she was never married. Rafe Jessup is in England from America to look at the horses that Josephine’s father is selling and the pair meet and fall in love. Unfortunately decisions and life aren’t simple and there are many hurtles to jump if they want to be together. This was a good one, I must say. You can review my review of this one tomorrow. 4 out of 5

Next was the novella Pia Saves the Day by Thea Harrison. This is book 6.6 in the Elder Races series and has Dragos in a horrible accident. He loses his memory but Pia’s not giving up on him. She won’t lose him to his wilder side no matter what she has to do. This was so good! I love Pia and Dragos and showing us the couple facing a huge obstacle in their life was emotionally moving yet wonderful. 4 out of 5

Running Wild by SE Jakes is the story of Sean Rush. He’s a mechanic who just got out of the Army. He’s also an adrenaline junkie and loves stealing and racing cars. Ryker is in the Havoc MC and has been breaking into Sean’s house for the past 8 months and having wild wonderful sex with him. One of Sean’s car thefts go bad and Ryker is there to pick up the pieces but all is not as it seems with Ryker or the Havoc MC. A really good m/m story that added the bonus of an MC. How could I not like this one? 4 out of 5

Debutantes Don’t Date by Kristina O’Grady is a time travel story of an event planner who gets thrown back in time to 1813 from 2013. She immediately meets an Earl and practically attacks him in an alcove at a ball. They’re caught and have to marry. She doesn’t want to marry, she just wants to go home but the longer she stays the more confused she is as she’s falling in love with the Earl. This book had a great premise but unfortunately the romance lacked….romance. On page it was completely lust driven and while steamy it didn’t solidify things in my mind. There was also the heroine who took a bit of getting used to as she couldn’t make up her mind about what she wanted. So decent read but not great. 3 out of 5 (read for Book Binge)

Last for the week was Peanut Goes to School by Thea Harrison. This short novella is about Peanut aka Liam, the son of Dragos and Pia, and his first day of school. It’s fun, heart warming, tender and wonderful. Definitely a must read. I just wanted to grab Liam and hug and kiss him he’s so cute. Put this on your must have list. Releases 7/14 4 out of 5

So Jamie is gay and has been in love with his best friend, Trevor, since almost the first time they met 14 years before. He’s kept his feelings about Trevor a secret but lately their friendship has been on the rocks and Jamie’s not sure he can take the angst. When Trevor doesn’t show up for their morning run Jamie is done and makes plans to move out of state – he can’t take being around Trevor if he’s just going to be an ass. After those plans are in the works Jamie decides to go on the run anyway and ends up finding Trevor on the trail, unconscious and with a huge lump on the side of his head.

When Trevor wakes up days later he can’t remember a thing about who Jamie is and even who he is. He’s does know that he’s incredibly attracted to Jamie and is confused when he gets out of the hospital and hears people telling him he’s straight. He just knows that can’t be right. He also knows that when people start telling him about the person that he is/was he doesn’t think he likes that person very much. He definitely needs a change in his life and he knows that Jamie will be a big part of that change. Soon Trevor is sharing his body with Jamie but Jamie is leery to make a commitment to the relationship. He believes that once Trevor gets his memory back that things will go back to the way they were.

His current partner in the Forestry Service where Trevor works is anxious to get his hands on a file that’s missing. He asks Trevor to contact him immediately if it is found as it contains crucial information to their current investigation. When both Trevor and Jamie start getting threats about their sexuality (after Trevor comes out in the middle of the town bar), Trevor gets even more interested in the investigation that he was involved in at the time of his accident. Between threats to both men, Trevor’s memory issues and Trevor’s uncle who believes that Jamie, and now Trevor, are abominations in God’s eyes, there’s never a dull moment in the small town of Snowcroft.

I gotta say that when I see an m/m amnesia story with 2 best friends and one is straight, I climb all over that bad boy. This one lived up to every expectation I had of it and threw in a bit of mystery as well.

I loved both Trevor and Jamie and wanted nothing more than for them to be together for the long haul – even though I knew that Trevor would have some rough times with his very religious family. I hadn’t quite expected Trevor’s uncle to be that vocal about his hatred of gays, that’s for sure. Yeah, I knew he was homophobic but not to the extent that it turned out he was. The story takes some twists and turns that I wasn’t expecting and that made it all the better.

The story was sweet and tender at times as well as fun, funny, horrific and tragic. There was definitely a good blend of everything in the story and it made for a bit of a page turner. I enjoyed the story immensely and am looking forward to the next book in the series.
