Kris‘ review of Secrets in the Wind by Charlotte Boyett-Campo

Prince Ruan is in the sights of an assassin who will stop at nothing to kill him. He’s in need of protection—though by his reckoning, he can bloody well take care of himself.

Major Chastain Neff is a lethal weapon. As one of the elite Riezell Guardians, she is an expert in all the deadly arts that have made her an accomplished bodyguard to the rich and important. When she’s assigned to protect a man who believes she’s the one who needs the protecting, she knows she’s going to have her hands full with Ruan Cosaint.

Queen Annalyn is not a woman to leave things to chance, especially when the mystic’s message pointed to a woman fated to become Prince Ruan’s consort, the ruler of his heart, his protector and the mother of his children.

I think this is part of her WindVerse series.  If it is, it is either the first or the second in the series.  Looking at her website it is the first but looking at the end of this story it is the second and looking at the Ellora’s Cave site it is not in the series at all.   This was a previous release in the Fated Mates anthology.

Anyway, it is a good read, I enjoyed it.  I wish it had been longer though.  It ended well but I always want them to be longer. I wanted this one to be developed just at little more than it was.  The storyline was a little quick and the characters needed to be fleshed out more for my tastes.  There was not as much world building in this story as I would have liked, but since it was simply a short story I can understand that because of size limits. I guess it makes me want to read more in this world.

Chas is a kick butt private soldier whose female status makes people underestimate her. She was interesting and funny. I loved the matchmaking mama and I loved that Ruan was smart as well as cute, and was not the totally spoiled prince.  He was in some ways (with women) but not in practical ways.
I give this a 3.75 out of 5
