A Brush of DarknessToday author Allison Pang is here to tell us how her debut urban fantasy, Brush of Darkness, came to be. I really love getting a look at the behind-the-scenes stuff.

___________

I originally wrote Brush of Darkness as an experiment. It started in the summer of 2008. I was co-writing another story with a friend for fun and the subject of possibly getting published had come up. Things ultimately didn’t end up working out with the co-writer, but in the meantime I decided to investigate exactly how one went about getting published. (Ha ha – yeah, that sounds a bit naïve, I suspect.)
At any rate, I started BoD, joined RWA, took a bunch of workshops and finished the draft in April of 2009. I started the query and pitch process shortly after that (as well myriad contests that summer.) By November 2009 I had my agent and by January 2010 I had a three book deal with Pocket.

Nothing of which really has anything to do with writing a series, but just to give you an example of how fast things can move. In BoD, Abby Sinclair has signed a seven year Contract with the Faery Protectorate. Originally I had thought I might write seven books – one for each year of her Contract. However, as anyone who has tried to get published knows, it can be very difficult to sell a series up front, particularly from an unknown author. Often that first book has to be able to stand alone, simply because it’s easier to sell.

So I abandoned my immediate thoughts of doing a series and just wrote BoD to be as much of a stand alone as I could. I still left some things unresolved on the off chance that it would get picked up, but overall it was complete unto itself. Now, I initially wrote BoD as a paranormal romance – there was a different ending than there is now, and there was more emphasis on the romance as a whole. When it sold to Pocket, I had to expand my thought process to three books…and I was asked to turn BoD into an urban fantasy.

In about six weeks, I gutted some pretty large chunks and ramped up the “Scooby gang” feel and lowered the romance level. Not that there isn’t still romance in there – there is, but if it had to, the story could stand without it at this point (with a little more tweaking.) I would say that BoD is a bit more cross-genre at this point, but I don’t think that’s a bad thing. There has been a bit of backlash from people who expect a straight pnr vs uf (i.e. there’s not enough romance/hea for pnr readers and too much romance for uf readers), but overall, I think it works.
Because I’m only contracted to write three books at this point, the current story arc is being shaped to be completed in those three. Not that I don’t want to write more (and I’d love to do a spin-off or two with some of the secondary characters as well). I am leaving the door nicely open, but I’d prefer to make sure things are as done as much as they can be…just in case. Now, this does mean that the second book may end in a bit of a cliffhanger, but the third book is currently scheduled to come out in the same year, so hopefully that won’t be too much of an issue for my readers.

Trust me and I’ll make it worth your while… 😉

A marine biologist in a former life, Allison Pang turned to a life of crime to finance her wild spending habits and need to collect Faberge eggs. A cat thief of notable repute, she spends her days sleeping and nights scaling walls and wooing dancing boys….Well, at least the marine biology part is true. But she was taloned by a hawk once.  She also loves Hello Kitty, sparkly shoes, and gorgeous violinists.

She spends her days in Northern Virginia working as a cube grunt and her nights waiting on her kids and cats, punctuated by the occasional husbandly serenade. Sometimes she even manages to write. Mostly she just makes it up as she goes.

Mary‘s review of A Brush of Darkness by Allison Pang

The man of her dreams might be the cause of her nightmares.

Six months ago, Abby Sinclair was struggling to pick up the pieces of her shattered life. Now, she has an enchanted iPod, a miniature unicorn living in her underwear drawer, and a magical marketplace to manage. But despite her growing knowledge of the OtherWorld, Abby isn’t at all prepared for Brystion, the dark, mysterious, and sexy-as- sin incubus searching for his sister, convinced Abby has the key to the succubus’s whereabouts.

Abby has enough problems without having this seductive shape-shifter literally invade her dreams to get information. But when her Faery boss and some of her friends vanish, as well, Abby and Brystion must form an uneasy alliance. As she is sucked deeper and deeper into this perilous world of faeries, angels, and daemons, Abby realizes her life is in as much danger as her heart—and there’s no one she can trust to save her.

When a story starts out with the line “Cat piss and cabbages”, which totally made me giggle (yes, I can be a bit juvenile at times), I have a feeling I’m going to like it. And I was right. This book is filled with all the elements I love—great characters, hot sexual tension, some action and adventure, and a good dose of humor.

Abby is under Contract to a Fae as a TouchStone, a human who anchors creatures of the OtherWorld to the human world, allowing them to stay for long periods of time. Except Abby’s Fae is missing. And Abby doesn’t know enough about the OtherWorld to keep up the façade or what to do when she’s approached by a devastatingly handsome guy who tries to seduce her the first time he meets her.

Brystion, aka Ion, just wants to find his sister who’s gone missing along with several other succubi. He’s sure Abby knows more than she’s telling him so he’s determined to stick by her side until she tells the truth. The heat between these two is palpable and practically radiates off the page. Granted, he’s an incubus—total sex on a stick who oozes hottness—but Abby does her best not to give in (at least right away…).

I love how Abby fumbles her way through, completely clueless but still willing to do what she has to do because she said she would. She’s got a rough history, one of the reasons she Contracted with a Fae. Ion is a steaming hot guy who has some issues (don’t they all), and I really enjoyed the interaction and sparks between Abby and Ion. There’s some excellent interplay of words between the two like when they’re in the kitchen and Ion’s cooking, one of them says, “Oh, I’ll cook your bacon.” (I forgot to write down who said that or what page it was on—sorry!) I do enjoy a good sexual innuendo.

It’s not only the main characters who are well-constructed and intriguing. The other people who round out this world add spice in their own way. I particularly liked Melanie, a gifted violinist who can “see” music and open Doorways between the human world and the OtherWorld. While she had a reputation for not taking sides in the Fae-Angel-Daemon dynamic, she was a fierce friend to Abby.

I do wish there had been a bit more worldbuilding in the beginning third of the book. The necessary information trickled in and, while I appreciated the fact that there were no massive info-dumps like in some books, I just needed a tad more at the start.

Between the unicorn who behaves like a frat boy on spring break, a gorgeous succubi who’s part angel, and the Midnight Marketplace, A BRUSH OF DARKNESS creates an intriguing urban world filled with mystery and desire. I’m looking forward to seeing what happens with Abby and her friends in the next installment of this new series.
