Casee: I’ve been glomming Kristen Ashley for about a month now. I started to read Golden Trail by KA, but it was pretty terrible. After that, I decided to take a break. Now I’m glomming Joanna Wylde’s Reapers MC series. I’m reading Devil’s Game, which is the third book in the series. I wasn’t very impressed with the first book, but it was good enough for me to move onto the second. I’m really glad I did. I’m really loving this series.
I’ve been listening to Iron and Magic by Ilona Andrews for weeks. I don’t know if I’m going to finish it. I really want to move on to the last book in the Kate Daniels series.
Holly: Holly: I started Wayfarer’s Keep by T.A. White, the third book in her Broken Lands series, but I ended up setting it aside a few chapters in. I needed some space between books before I finish the series. I’ll go back to it later. I finally read Deal with the Devil by Kit Rocha, a post-apocalyptic romance featuring mercenary librarians. It was really good. I loved the girl power and overall strength of the characters. I read How to Save an Undead Life by Hailey Edwards, the start of The Beginner’s Guide to Necromancy series. I liked it so much I immediately started the second book, How to Claim an Undead Soul. This is a UF series, so not a lot of romance yet, but I’m anxious to see where it goes.
What are you reading this week? Any new favorites or books that drove you crazy? Share!
I just finished All the Right Mistakes by Laura Jamison. It was okay.
Since last time ~
— enjoyed The Right Sort of Man: A Sparks & Bainbridge Mystery by Allison Montclair which might find other fans here. It’s set in post world war II London and features two women who have started a marriage bureau. I will happily read on in this series (of two books thus far).
— The River of Doubt: Theodore Roosevelt’s Darkest Journey by Candice Millard for my book group. Last month’s book (A Primate’s Memoir) left me with no desire to go to Africa; this book has left me with no desire to go to the Amazon. Clearly, reading book group nonfiction books is dangerous to my travel bucket list! That said, the story was compelling … though not quite as compelling as the author’s Destiny of the Republic which I read a year or so ago.
— a young adult paranormal romance, The Midnight Gardener by R. G. Thomas. It was a pleasant story; however, it ended on a cliffhanger and I’m not compelled to read on in the series. I will say that it’s the first time I’ve encountered a major character in a book who was a (spoiler ahead) garden gnome.
A garden gnome? That’s interesting and not something I’ve encountered before.
I’m currently reading DARK FAIRY TALES, an anthology of 11 fairy tale retellings, each written by a different “dark romance” writer. The stories are interconnected in that all of that take place in part at a huge masquerade ball. So far my favorite is Sierra Simone’s THE PRINCESS AND THE PEA. The heroine is the Vice President (Kamala fanfic already?) and her ex-husband is the hero. Simone really knows how to pace a short story and get inside the heart & mind of an older woman trying to decide what she wants, not what she thinks she wants.
Holly, I loved Hailey Edward’s Beginner’s Guide to Necromancy series – it’s one of my few autobuys at full price. Don’t worry, there’s a wonderful, sweet romance, it just takes a couple of books to really kick in. I’m currently in the middle of Man Card by Sarina Bowen but Hailey Edwards just released a new novella in the Undead series and it’s waiting not so patiently on my Kindle – hopefully I’ll get to it this weekend.
I’m really enjoying it. I can already see the romance developing (and not the obvious one), but even so, i wasn’t worried. I only mentioned the lack thereof for those who don’t like to read non-romance. Happy reading this weekend!
