What Are You Reading? (164)

Rowena: I’ve been reading nothing but New Adult for the past couple of weeks and loving pretty much everything that I’m reading.  But this week, I put down the New Adult books and picked up Perfect Fling by Carly Phillips.  So far, I’m pretty much loving it.  I’m loving Cole.  I’m loving Erin.  And I’m loving seeing Mike and Cara again.  Only thing, I’m not loving? Not enough Sam! =)

Holly: I’m finally out of my reading slump. YAY! I managed to read 10 books last week. SCORE! Some of them weren’t that great, but I can’t even be mad since I was actually reading. I felt like part of me was missing. Sounds dramatic, but it’s true.

Yesterday I read Easy by Tammara Webber. What a great book. I have no idea why I didn’t read it when there was so much buzz about it last year. I’m sorry I put it off. I didn’t want it to end. It wasn’t a perfect book, but it was a solid read. I’d definitely recommend it.

Before that I read Turn and Burn by Lorelei James. This is my first book by James. I really enjoyed the story and the strong female characters. We don’t see women portrayed that way often enough in romance novels. I also read The Firefly Cafe by Lily Everett (Contemp, short but sweet), The Bet by Rachel Van Dyken (contemp, good) and The Rockers series by Terri Anne Browning – The Rocker That Holds Me, The Rocker That Savors Me and The Rocker That Needs Me. Those there were trainwrecks, and not in a good way. Cryin all night in a bucket were those terribly written. The acknowledgment in the third book starts out “I want to thank my husband who supported me so I could right these books”. I don’t know why I subjected myself to that. I need help. Obviously.

I also read two books by Cherrie Lynn, Unleashed – which was just ok – and Rock Me – which I really enjoyed.

  1. After a really good spell in July, all my August review books are sucking. So I’m taking a relaxation break with an old Michelle Reid, Lost in Love. Apparently the heroine has legs that go all the way to her waist, which strikes as potentially an issue if she ever wants to have children.

I’ve been on a contemporary romance kick thanks to those recent sales by Entangled. So far, I’ve read two that I loved, Talking Dirty With the CEO by Jackie Ashendon, which includes a scene where the hero and heroine bond while rebuilding a computer LOL, and One Night With A Hero by Laura Kaye, which featured some fantastic groveling by the hero. I also just discovered Brenda Novak and her Whiskey Creek series.

Thanks for the heads up about the Terri Anne Browning books – I hate it when so-called “authors” publish their books without even bothering to get any decent editing. It shows such contempt for their readers and for the written word.

This week I’ve read Game for Marriage by Karen Erickson (I’m a sucker for a sports romance, I wish it was longer!), Collide and Pulse by Gail McHugh and Three Little Words by Susan Mallery. Right now I’m reading The Darkest Craving by Gena Showalter. I absolutely loved Collide and Pulse but was slightly disappointed with Three Little Words. I’ve been waiting for a while to read Ford’s story, but there wasn’t enough Ford and I feel like it was wrapped up a little too nicely, you know? Somethings you just saw coming. It had it moments that made me LOL but for the most part I was disappointed. So far, I’m enjoying The Darkest Craving. I’ve been a little disappointed with the Lords books but I’m liking Kane’s story so far.

I haven’t read Carly Phillips yet, I tried Hot Item and just couldn’t get into it. I read her short story in Hot Summer Nights. Would you recommend the Serendipity series? I have book 1 on my Nook (it was 99 cents and didn’t want to pass it up) but haven’t gotten to read it. My TBR list just keeps getting bigger and bigger.

I also waited to read Easy and I could’ve kicked myself. It was a good read, had it on my Nook forever and was glad I finally broke down and read it.
