Dark Descent and Dark Dream are combined in Dark Nights.

#1 New York Times bestselling author Christine Feehan revisits and expands her classic novella Dark Descent, bringing to breathtaking new life her story of an immortal Carpathian hunter, a beautiful adventurer, and their dangerous journey toward an unforeseen destiny and an undying love.

In a cave of mystery and wonder deep in the Carpathian Mountains, bodyguard Joie Sanders encounters a most remarkable being. Proud, strong, immortal, he is called Traian—an ageless hunter locked in a life-and-death battle with enemy vampires—and he will be her salvation in a labyrinth protected by the ingenious traps of a mysterious ancient race. What awaits them in the darkness is not known, and each step could be their last—as their destined path leads them toward a fiery passion that will illuminate the perilous dark night.

Note: Dark Dream was previously in After Twilight & Dark Dreamers.

Dark Descent was previously in The Only One.

I stopped reading the Dark series years and years ago. One of the last books I really enjoyed before I stopped reading was Dark Descent, which was originally published in The Only One anthology. I thought Joie and Traian’s story was fresh and interesting. The plot twisted in an unexpected way and I thought it brought new life to the series. It seems to veer off again after that, however, so I gave up. When I saw this book was being released and it featured one of my favorite novellas, plus an additional 100 pages, I decided to do a reread.

Dark Dream: I skimmed this story. It wasn’t one of my favorites back in the day and I found that to be the case this time around as well. Falcon is one of the higher-ups in the Carpathian order, so he’s domineering and closed off. There isn’t a lot to the story. They find each other, Falcon claims her, she resists for a second but can’t help herself..basically normal Carpathian fare. Nothing to write home about.

DARK DESCENT: Joie connects with Traian telepathically when she’s shot. She doesn’t think he’s real, but she’s compelled to find him anyway. She and her siblings climb a mountain to explore a cave she knows is there but can’t find, though she doesn’t explain the reason they’re there is because of this mystery man who talks to her in her head. Traian is trapped inside the mountain, being sucked dry by some vampires. Joie discovers him and a whole host of trouble along with him. He wants to turn her away, but she won’t go.

Joie is probably my favorite of all the heroine’s in this series. She’s strong and sassy and independent. She also has a strong sense of family and a deep connection to her siblings. Her reaction to Traian’s revelation that he’s Carpathian and vampires exist was believable.

The storyline was interesting. I like the direction Feehan is taking the series – the Dragonslayers, mages, etc – though I admit I haven’t read any of the other books that follow the theme. Maybe someday.

It’s been too many years since I read this originally to say how much a difference the extra 100 pages made. I probably should have re-read the original so I could make a fair comparison. I will say I enjoyed the story and it seemed to have more detail than I remembered before. But that’s not saying a lot considering my memory is like swiss cheese these days.

I don’t plan to continue reading the series, but I did enjoy my trip down memory lane.
