Kati‘s review of Branded Sanctuary (Nature of Desire, Book 7) by Joey W. Hill.

Chloe has always been a creature of joy and laughter. Since a brutal attack nearly a year ago, the trauma she experienced has gotten worse. She has started hiding from her life, even putting up walls between herself and those she cares about most. During a panic attack one night, she impulsively calls a number that she’s had for many months. Chloe met Brendan at her boss’s wedding. With confidence and seduction, he easily steps into the role of helping her manage her fear. By the end of the long call, they’ve indulged in some serious flirtation and mind-blowing phone sex—and she’s feeling things she’s buried for too long.

The problem is that Brendan is the perfect male submissive—and Chloe isn’t wired for the D/s lifestyle. While their attraction is undeniable, Chloe doesn’t know if she can be everything Brendan needs. As a submissive, Brendan would never ask her to be something she’s not—even if it will break both of their hearts to turn away from how they feel about each other.

A survivor of a vicious attack, Chloe is struggling. She used to embrace life, heading for every adventure with complete abandon, and now she’s afraid of everything. One night, she awakens from a horrible nightmare, and impulsively calls Brendan, a guy she met at her friend and boss, Marguerite’s wedding. Brendan has been waiting for Chloe to call. He was very attracted to her at the wedding, and gave her his number, but she never called, and he figured she wasn’t interested. He’s thrilled when his phone awakens him in the middle of the night and it’s her. He stays on the phone for hours with her, and in fact, has a very hot encounter with her on the phone. Chloe is bewildered. She’s never behaved this way before, but she feels so safe with Brendan. The next morning, she stumbles out of bed and walks out her door to find him waiting for her. He takes her to work with a promise to pick her up at the end of the day. Chloe knows she’s done for.

But Brendan has a secret. He’s a sexual submissive. And his Mistress is Chloe’s boss, Marguerite. Brendan struggles with how to share this aspect of his life with Chloe, unsure of how she’ll react. Chloe is aware of Marguerite’s lifestyle as a Mistress, but is unaware of her relationship with Brendan. She’s not just his Mistress, but has a past with him. Chloe is bewildered by Brendan’s role as a sexual submissive. She doesn’t understand pain with sex, and while she wants a future with Brendan, she just doesn’t know how she could ever fulfill him sexually. It goes against her nature.

This book was an absolute revelation for me. I have always said that I didn’t understand pain with sex, and I never really identified with the D/s life. But this book explored it in a way that I could relate to. Joey W. Hill never uses the D/s scenes to titillate. She focuses on Brendan’s motivations, how he struggles to reveal not just what he wants sexually, but to make Chloe understand his relationship with Marguerite. Personally, I could identify completely with Chloe’s bewilderment, her attraction to Brendan, and her slow identification of how her pain and difficulties getting over her attack might help her to understand better Brendan’s life and choices. The book is emotionally packed and paced gorgeously, with Hill never, ever rushing a moment, and allowing the reader to relish the slow development of Chloe and Brendan’s relationship. I didn’t realize it when I asked for the book, but it is book 7 in the Nature of Desire series. While I knew pretty early on that there were preceding books, I never felt lost, or like I was missing something. I was intrigued by a couple of secondary characters in the book, but not enough to ever distract me. Branded Sanctuary is a lovely, resonant, emotional romance that I recommend without equivocation. I can tell you that I finished the book and immediately turned back to the beginning to read it again.

Review: Holding the Cards by Joey W. Hill

Lauren is a successful doctor with a healthy attitude toward sex, unashamed of her proclivities as a sexual dominant. She wants love and a family, but she’s beginning to believe there is no Mr. Right willing to stand by her in sickness and health.

Then her friend Lisette invites her to spend a long weekend on a private island. It turns out Lisette can’t come with her, but Lauren opts to go anyway, with no one for company but Joshua, the island caretaker, and his visiting friend, Marcus. Though both men are beautiful, it is Joshua that catches Lauren’s attention, and not just because Marcus prefers men.

Something in Josh’s stormy eyes calls to her. When Marcus facilitates a game of submission and control between the three of them that will last throughout the weekend, Lauren embraces the opportunity. Josh overwhelms her with his willingness to submit to her body’s desires, but her heart wants to get to the secrets behind those eyes. She is going to have to tear down his defenses and make him give her everything. And this is one miss who doesn’t take no for an answer…

This is the first book in the Nature of Desire series. Joey Hill does a great job, yet again, of writing a submissive hero. It’s seems so unlikely that you could have a submissive man that isn’t weak.

Lauren comes to the secluded island to get away from real life. After a difficult relationship that shattered her confidence as a Dominant and as a woman, Lauren hopes to find the peace that being on a private island can bring. That’s before she meets Josh, a caretaker and obvious submissive. Though Lauren is sure that Josh is submissive, she’s not sure that he understands that he is.

Josh is attracted to Lauren from the moment he sees her stuck in a tree. After a disastrous marriage that destroyed him, Josh retreated to the island to live. All he wants is to do his art in peace. With the exception of his friend Marcus, Josh has little contact with the outside world.

This book was very well written. Lauren has to prove to Josh that he’s the submissive and that the failure of his marriage was not his fault. She has to show him how to forgive himself, even as she wonders if she can fall in love so easily after she thought her heart was broken.

If you haven’t read BDSM, this is a perfect book to start with.

Review: Rough Canvas by Joey W. Hill

When his father dies, Thomas is forced to abandon a burgeoning art career in New York. As difficult as it was to give up his lifelong dream, it’s nothing next to walking away from the man he loves. Marcus taught him to embrace who he is, a sexual submissive who responds to the touch of only one Master. But why would the sophisticated Marcus need some farm kid from the South?

Then Marcus shows up and offers him a way to continue his art career and help his family. There’s only one hitch — he asks Thomas to spend a week with him in the Berkshires. Thomas knows he should refuse. But he’s never been able to say no to his Master.

I was pleasantly surprised with this book. This was not the first m/m book I’ve read. I read one by the train wreck that is Carol Lynne. It was trashy. Rough Canvas was dirty, but it was a romance.

Thomas is an artist who met Marcus when he was interested in his work. Thomas was halfway in, halfway out of the closet. His friends and acquaintances in New York where he sold his art knew he was gay. His parents weren’t so accepting. When his father dies and his brother gets into an accident that puts him in a wheelchair, Thomas leaves Marcus to go back to help at his family’s farm. Even Thomas admits that part of him is running away from his feelings for Marcus.

The only way Marcus can get Thomas back into his life is by offering him something that he loves. The chance to do his art. He’s horrified when he shows up and sees Thomas. The healthy, happy lover that he remembers is no more. Instead, an over-worked, unhealthy and obviously unhappy man stands in his place. Seeing Thomas makes Marcus more determined than ever to get him away.

Although the blurb makes it seem like this is a BDSM book, I really don’t think it is. There are definitely elements of BDSM there, but other than that? Not so much. It’s really the story of Thomas and Marcus. Marcus is the Master in the relationship, but it’s Thomas that saves him in the end. I think that Hill did an amazingly good job of capturing the emotions of the characters. Thomas’ anguish over his mother’s inability to accept him is just heartbreaking.

If you’ve been thinking about trying an m/m romance, but aren’t sure, I highly suggest this one. I think this book can stand alone in the Nature of Desire series.

Have you ever left your reading comfort zone?

Posted November 26, 2008 by Casee in Discussions | 9 Comments

I’m getting ready to review Rough Canvas by Joey W. Hill. This is the latest book in her Nature of Desire series. It’s also a m/m romance.

Now if you asked me two or three years ago if I would ever read a m/m romance, I would have said no way in hell. It wasn’t that I just all of a sudden decided I wanted to read a m/m romance. When I really started going beyond my comfort zone was when I read Natural Law by Joey W. Hill. Before that book, I had read some BDSM, but not much. What I had read, I didn’t particularly like. I loved Natural Law. So I read all the books in the Nature of Desire series. Some I liked more than others. Natural Law is still my favorite in the series. Anyway, when Rough Canvas came out, I had to read it. Not only was it part of the Nature of Desire series, one of the heroes was a character from a previous book.

I really enjoyed Rough Canvas. I guess I had this vague thought that I would feel uncomfortable reading it, but that wasn’t the case. It was a romance, just like any other romance I’ve read. Still, it was reading out of my comfort zone b/c I didn’t know what to expect.

Which brings me to my questions…have you ever left your reading comfort zone? What book(s) took you out of that comfort zone?
