Review: Holding the Cards by Joey W. Hill

Lauren is a successful doctor with a healthy attitude toward sex, unashamed of her proclivities as a sexual dominant. She wants love and a family, but she’s beginning to believe there is no Mr. Right willing to stand by her in sickness and health.

Then her friend Lisette invites her to spend a long weekend on a private island. It turns out Lisette can’t come with her, but Lauren opts to go anyway, with no one for company but Joshua, the island caretaker, and his visiting friend, Marcus. Though both men are beautiful, it is Joshua that catches Lauren’s attention, and not just because Marcus prefers men.

Something in Josh’s stormy eyes calls to her. When Marcus facilitates a game of submission and control between the three of them that will last throughout the weekend, Lauren embraces the opportunity. Josh overwhelms her with his willingness to submit to her body’s desires, but her heart wants to get to the secrets behind those eyes. She is going to have to tear down his defenses and make him give her everything. And this is one miss who doesn’t take no for an answer…

This is the first book in the Nature of Desire series. Joey Hill does a great job, yet again, of writing a submissive hero. It’s seems so unlikely that you could have a submissive man that isn’t weak.

Lauren comes to the secluded island to get away from real life. After a difficult relationship that shattered her confidence as a Dominant and as a woman, Lauren hopes to find the peace that being on a private island can bring. That’s before she meets Josh, a caretaker and obvious submissive. Though Lauren is sure that Josh is submissive, she’s not sure that he understands that he is.

Josh is attracted to Lauren from the moment he sees her stuck in a tree. After a disastrous marriage that destroyed him, Josh retreated to the island to live. All he wants is to do his art in peace. With the exception of his friend Marcus, Josh has little contact with the outside world.

This book was very well written. Lauren has to prove to Josh that he’s the submissive and that the failure of his marriage was not his fault. She has to show him how to forgive himself, even as she wonders if she can fall in love so easily after she thought her heart was broken.

If you haven’t read BDSM, this is a perfect book to start with.

4 out of 5.

I’ve heard about this series from other sites. It sounds awesome. I’ve never read a BDSM…perhaps it’s time to start.

    Thanks for the review!
