Just for Fun: Book Related Questions

Posted April 22, 2020 by Holly in Discussions | 5 Comments

I don’t know about the rest of you, but when we first headed into quarantine I was so excited to finally read all the books!

Meme: Me, "Well, I seem to have a lot free time on my hands. I guess I could start reading from my TBR pile." Movie Image "It has been 4000 years. Now Seems like a good time."

Unfortunately, it hasn’t worked out very well. I’m struggling to focus on reading during this quarantine. I have been re-reading some old favorites, but I can’t seem to get into anything new. Even continuations of series I enjoy aren’t working for me. So, instead of reading I put together these fun book related questions. Join me?

Image of stack of books with five questions embedded (questions listed in post text)

1. What books are on your bedside table at the moment?

The Scoundrel in Her Bed by Lorraine Heath, Deal with the Devil by Kit Rocha and Dragon Unleashed by Grace Draven.

2. What type (contemporary, historical, biography, etc) of books do you like reading most at the moment?

I’ve been reading more Fantasy and Urban Fantasy than anything else lately, but I think I’m craving a good historical right now.

3. What’s the best book you’ve read so far this year?

I really enjoyed Chasing Cassandra by Lisa Kleypas and Smoke Bitten by Patricia Briggs, but I think my favorite so far has been Beauty and the Clockwork Beast by Nancy Campbell Allen.

4. Which book have you re-read the most in the past year (12-month period)?

Repeat by Kylie Scott or Fairytale Come Alive by Kristen Ashley. I don’t track every re-read, so I’m not sure which.

5. Name one book/author that everyone loves but you really can’t stand?

I’m bringing up an old one here. I do no understand the love for Dreaming of You by Lisa Kleypas. Everyone loves Derek and Sara, but they frustrated me so much! I just do no understand the love.

  1. I will always love Dreaming of You and both Derek and Sara. You’re so weird. Haha.

Ooh, I love these kinds of posts so don’t mind if I do…

    1. What books are on your bedside table at the moment? Love Hard by Nalini Singh, Magic Breaks by Ilona Andrews, and Magic Shifts by Ilona Andrews. Lots of Kate Daniels.

    2. What type (contemporary, historical, biography, etc) of books do you like reading most at the moment? Urban Fantasy or just straight-up fantasy. Nothing else is holding my attention right now, not even contemporary and that’s always been my go to. What is going on?

    3. What’s the best book you’ve read so far this year? For me, the best book has been Magic Strikes by Ilona Andrews. I loved every aspect of that book.

    4. Which book have you re-read the most in the past year (12-month period)? Hmm, probably Burn for Me by Ilona Andrews. Can you guys tell that I love me some Ilona Andrews?

    5. Name one book/author that everyone loves but you really can’t stand? Hmm, I had to think about this one for a minute but I guess it would be The Friend Zone by Abby Jimenez and Mystery Man by Kristen Ashley. I’ve seen plenty of great reviews for those two and I don’t understand it at all. Those books sucked the biggest donkey balls of all time.

What books are on your bedside table at the moment? Assuming my kindle is on my bedside table, I’m currently reading MINE & HIS, a dark mafia romance duet from Natasha Knight & A. Zavarelli. I have Keri Lake’s MASTER OF SALT AND BONES and Aster Glen Grey’s THE THREE-FOLD TIE up next on my Kindle Unlimited list, but after that I’m clearing the decks for next Monday (April 27) when Kati Wilde is finally, finally releasing LOSING IT ALL, the next in her Hellfire Riders MC series. I may set my alarm for midnight so I can start reading it as soon as it downloads.

What type of books do you like reading at the moment? Contemporary romances—they always make up the bulk of my reading.

What is the best book you’ve read so far this year? I can’t narrow it down to less than three and, coincidentally, all of them involve loss, grief, and finding a way forward:

CREDENCE by Penelope Douglas: Beautifully-written NA/reverse-harem/snowbound-enforced-proximity/found-family story about a young woman who goes to live with her step-uncle and his two sons after her parents die.

FINDING HIM by Rachel Van Dyken: Emotional story about recovering from loss when a woman, writing a book about her late fiancé’s battle with cancer, falls for the man who is helping her write the book. In a way, the late fiancé becomes a real character in the book.

WITHOUT YOU by Marley Valentine: Interesting twist on the “man falls for his late brother’s widow” trope with a man (who has always identified as straight) falling for his late (gay) brother’s widower. Excellent insight into how grief shifts family dynamics.

Which book have you reread the most in the past year? FAR CRY by Kate Canterbary. Prickly heroine, gruff-grumpy hero, a small coastal town in Maine, and a rather tangled path to love. I’ve probably read it five times since I read it for the first time last year.

Name one book/author that everyone loves but you really can’t stand. Ok, at the risk of having my Romancelandia card revoked, I have to say that Lucy Parker has never done it for me. I just cannot get into her books.

    • Hey Deb! Contemporaries are where it’s at but for some reason, I can’t get into any right now. I haven’t heard of a bunch of the books you mentioned so I’m going to look them up. Unfortunately, Penelope Douglas doesn’t work for me so I’ve been very hesitant to try anything else by her. Thanks for stopping by!

    I’ll play ~

What books are on your bedside table at the moment?

None, but I have a basket of library books that I’ve been ignoring, hundred of books on my shelves, and thousands of books on my Kindle.

What type (contemporary, historical, biography, etc) of books do you like reading most at the moment?

I seem to be favoring books set in space. My last read was the first Murderbot novella by Martha Wells.

What’s the best book you’ve read so far this year?

While I’ve read a lot of books that I’ve enjoyed, I don’t have a recent best or favorite book.

Which book have you re-read the most in the past year (12-month period)?

That would be Linesman by SK Dunstall. I recommend it! Be aware though that there is only the slightest hint of romance over the three book series.

Name one book/author that everyone loves but you really can’t stand?

Hmm, nothing is immediately coming to mind.

    Hmm…
    1) On my (virtual) bedside table – The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson for my bookclub, Crush the King by Jennifer Estep, Chasing Cassandra by Lisa Kleypas, and Betwixt by Darynda Jones.
    2) What type of book am I reading most at the moment – I’ve got a bunch of ARCs that are mainly contemporary romance, but I tend to default to anything otherworldly – UF/PNR/SF Romance.
    3) Best book so far in 2020 – It’s hard to choose but I guess my favorites have been Inside Track by Tamsen Parker, Strange Love by Ann Aguirre, and If I Never Met You by Mhairi McFarlane.
    4) I rarely reread, but if I do, it’s the Alpha/Omega series by Patricia Briggs. Invariably, once I start with the first novella, I end up rereading the entire series. I LOVE Anna and Charles.
    5) I’m very picky about writing style. One popular author that I don’t click with is Christine Feehan.
