Helenkay Dimon Stops By Book Binge (+Giveaway)

Thank you for having me here today to talk about my new release – new as in it’s out TODAY – called NO TURNING BACK.

The book follows sons of a notorious con man, Charlie Hanover. Charlie is a bit of a Bernie Madoff type in his financial schemes, but he also thinks nothing of charming women out of their jewelry, bank accounts and wallets. He’s a lovely guy. Or, he was. He’s dead now and his sons are stuck cleaning up the mess he left behind. They have to deal with angry victims, their own questions and all the negatives that come with being that guy’s sons.

I got the idea for the book because I was reading an article about the daughter of a killer. To her, he had a terrible temper and wasn’t around much, but he was still dad. It’s just so hard for me to imagine a truly bad guy like that taking his kids to the park. My mind can’t grasp it. After reading a few memoirs of kids with very nasty parents, I began to see a pattern where the kids got painted with the same “you’re evil!” brush as their bad parents. As someone who likes writing characters who have to overcome their pasts, this seemed like a perfect idea to explore. And who better to be the heroine for one of these sons then a child of one of Charlie’s first victims, someone with some anger of her own.

Two imperfect people. Two difficult pasts. How could I not write that story?

Here’s a short snippet where they start to realize neither one of them had it too easy growing up:

His voice shook as he spoke, low and subtle, but she heard it. When he stopped talking, his anger continued to shake the room. Tension rolled off his stiff shoulders and slammed into her, stealing her breath with its force.
“You want me to feel guilty.” She whispered the phrase because he was right there, just inches away, hovering over her and closing in without moving.
“I want you to understand you aren’t the only one who’s lived with Charlie’s mess.”
“I get that you’re a victim.” One of the hundreds, possibly thousands, Charlie left in his wake.
“I refuse to accept the label and all the dysfunction that goes with it.”
Maybe survivor was the right word. This could be the greatest, most convincing con of his life, of course, and part of her wanted to believe that so she wouldn’t care, but she couldn’t muster the skepticism. A piece of the wall she’d erected against Declan slipped and shattered.
