Casee‘s review of No Place to Run (KGI Series, Book 2) by Maya Banks.

The last person Sam Kelly expected to save was Sophie Lundgren. Once they shared a brief, intense affair while Sam was undercover and then she vanished. She’s spent the last few months on the run, knowing that any mistake would cost her both her life and that of their unborn child. Now she’s resurfaced with a warning for Sam: this time, he’s the one in danger.

This series is spectacular. Maya Banks continues to prove herself in the romance genre as both a writer of erotic romance and romantic suspense. In No Place to Run, the reader is brought back to KGI. Namely Sam Kelly, the brother that seems to have his shit together. Only he is just as vulnerable as the next brother. While in Mexico on a mission for KGI, Sam meets Sophie Lundgren and immediately engages in a hot and heavy affair. Sam has to go undercover and Sophie vanishes. That’s that until Sophie shows up, left for dead on his doorstep five months later.

Sophie has been on the run from her uncle since the day she left Sam in Mexico. She never expected to have to see Sam again after that day. Then she found out she was pregnant. She’s been waiting months to be able to go to Sam for help. When she finally does go, she almost gets caught by her uncle’s men. She barely makes it to Sam and almost immediately realizes her mistake.

Sam is going to do whatever it takes to protect Sophie and her baby, even if it means going against Sophie’s wishes. When Sam learns who Sophie really is, the last thing he can afford to do is trust her. She says that she’s pregnant with his child, but can he really believe her? Everything he thought about her seems to have been a lie, but everything he feels about her is as prominent as ever

Sophie has lived her entire life under the iron fist of her criminal father. The last thing she plans on doing is letting Sam tell her how to live her life and protect her baby. Yes, she came to him for help but she has no plans to let him take over. As much as a small part of her wants to let him take care of everything, Sophie can’t let her guard down. Something that she was smart to do as everything starts falling apart just days after she shows up.

One of the things I love about this series is the sense of family. The Kelly’s will do anything for each other. Each of the Kelly brothers is leery of taking Sophie in. After learning who her father is, they know the potential threat she is to their family. Yet they don’t hesitate to protect her because it’s what Sam wants. When their family is put in danger because of Sophie, they don’t put her on the outside, but bring her into the protective circle. That was poignant, as Sophie was so used to taking care of herself.

There was a particular scene where Sam thought that Sophie betrayed him and she finally accepted that she was going to die that actually almost brought tears to my eyes. I could just feel her defeat; her utter despair over being unable to protect her baby. Her love for Sam and knowing that she was going to die with him thinking that she betrayed him. The whole thing was just heartbreaking. Of course Sam got his head out of his ass, but it was almost too late. I loved this book as much as The Darkest Hour and I have to give it a 4.5 out of 5.
