First date à la Maggie: Take one lovelorn diner owner (me), a generous helping of nosy local gossips, a dollop of envy at married sister's perfect life, a splash of divine intervention (my matchmaking priest). Combine ingredients with one adorable puppy, add a strong but silent lobsterman with a hidden heart of gold and watch the sparks fly.

Kristan Higgins is fast becoming an auto buy for me, this is the second book by her that I’ve read and I read it all in one sitting. I started it at about 8pm and finished it the wee hours of the morning, my eyes were drooping but I just could not put this book down. I had that much fun reading through this one.

This book is about Maggie Beaumont’s love life. She’s up for anything and she’s not shy about accepting blind date invites and she knows that she has to get out there and date, date, date if she wants to meet someone to spend her tomorrow’s with so she’s all about putting in the work and put in the work she did. She went on date after date, embarrassed herself time after time and each incident made for lots of laughs and just an enjoyable read.

Maggie Beaumont was a great heroine. There were times when I wanted to strangle her but for the most part, I really liked her. I could totally picture me and her being friends. I could see myself parked right next to her at the bar, flirting with her brother and making googly eyes at Malone. It was a good time of a story and I enjoyed seeing the chemistry build between Malone and Maggie. I loved that they knew each other from around town and that they were friendly but didn’t have any kind of friendship or anything between them because it made the getting to know each other thing that much more cute to watch as their love story came together.

Malone was a great hero too. He was one of those mysterious heroes that keeps you on your toes. He’s one of those heroes that you want to lick all over and cuddle close as well. He’s the kind of hero that you know you’re safe with and one that will protect you from harm. He’ll make you feel womanly and precious and I loved that about him. He was a great frickin’ hero and I heart him.

The story itself was a fun one, we see Maggie stumbling along trying to find her happy ending and much to her embarrassment, everyone witnesses all of these stumbles. She doesn’t let it get her down though, she keeps right on trucking along and living her life the only way she knows how to …full out. I enjoyed seeing her relationship with her sister and brother and then with her parents. Her mother could be a real pain in the you know what some of the time but when Maggie finally let her have it, I was right there cheering her on like the good friend that I know I would be to her.

This is one of those good time books that is perfect for those lazy weekends when you want nothing more than a story that will take you away for a couple of hours. It’s not anything serious or drama filled, it’s just a good time. Kind of like a cold glass of lemonade on the hottest day in summer, it hits the spot and leaves a huge grin on your face. That’s what I’ve come to love about Kristan Higgin’s books. They’re so much fun to read and they’re light and cute and you just want to hold them close. This book didn’t disappoint and it’s another great book pimp from Diana (THANKS DIANA!). I definitely recommend this book to anyone wanting a great contemporary love story.

This book is available from HQN. You can buy it here or here in e-format.

  1. Hey Rowena!

This one was my least favorite of Ms Higgins book… I don’t know, I didn’t really like Malone. I didn’t feel the connection between him and Maggie. Glad you enjoyed it though 🙂

  2. M.

This is a book I would never have picked up on my own, because the cutesy puppy cover screamed ‘girlie tween audience’ to me, like something I’d give to the daughter of a friend. Having really enjoyed another Higgans title, though, I’d like to read this.

  3. Kaetrin

I really enjoyed this book too. The bad dates Maggie has are hilarious – the “groin” and the slobby guy – they are laugh out loud funny.

My one bugbear with this one was that there just wasn’t enough of Malone in it. I wanted to see much more of him, listen in on more conversations and understand him better. I felt I was largely guessing.

The other books I have read have had much more of the hero and I felt I knew them much better notwithstanding that they are all written in the first person.

I don’t usually like reading first person novels but Ms. Higgins is now an autobuy for me. I’ve read all of her books and loved them all too.

…I just wish I had more time with Malone. I heart him too!

  4. Thank you Rowena! I love a good contemporary, but I didn’t realise they were written in the first person, which usually I’m not a fan of. Does it work, being in the first person I mean?
