Vampire hunter Elena Deveraux is hired by the dangerously beautiful Archangel Raphael. But this time, it’s not a wayward vamp she has to track. It’s an archangel gone bad.
The job will put Elena in the midst of a killing spree like no other—and pull her to the razor’s edge of passion. Even if the hunt doesn’t destroy her, succumbing to Raphael’s seductive touch just may. For when archangels play, mortals break.
This is a world where Angel, Vampire & Human coexist. Not necessarily under friendly terms but they exist. The Angels are in control and for the most part vampires follow their “sires” – the angels who Made them.
Then there’s the Guild – the group of hunters that are hired to bring the vamps to heel for their angels. Elena is located in NY and she’s the best of the best when it comes to hunters. Raphael, Archangel and ruler of NY, has hired Elena to find another Archangel. She’s not given much info and is pretty much kept in the dark but is expected to do her job.
In the meantime though she’s making some pretty serious enemies among the vamps and the angels; when her job of tracking is done she’s pretty sure her life will end. So as long as she’s going to die she decides that giving in to her lust for Raphael. But is it just lust? And how exactly is Raphael feeling about all of this?
Once again Nalini Singh has brought us a truly magnificent world. As in her Psy/Changeling series it’s a world that is very similar to ours yet just different enough. It seems that angels are pretty commonplace, yet there are rare enough sightings that humans are clicking away on their camera phones when they are seen. It all seems so normal for 2009 but these are angels! Not something we catch a gander at on a regular basis.
The story, as well as the wonderful world-building, had me entranced with this book.It was great to read about Elena’s kick-ass character go head to head with Raphael in all his long-lived cruelty. The emotional & sexual tension that was crackling off the pages was truly mesmerizing.
There were a few questions that I still had at the end of the book that weren’t cleared up but I know that they will be answered in future books so I’m not too worried about that. I’m very much looking forward to the next book in this series. Of course that seems like forever away but I’ll think about that another day.
