Lightning Reviews: Jo Goodman

Posted December 30, 2007 by Casee in Reviews | 6 Comments

This is the story of the Compass Club. A series of four books, I thought it would be done best if they were reviewed together.

Let Me Be the One
4.5 out of 5

In bestselling author Jo Goodman’s captivating new quartet, you’ll meet the four intriguing gentlemen of the Compass Club — North, South, East, and West — as they find adventure, excitement, and, of course, romance. Now, in book one of this sweeping and sensual series set in Regency England, join Brendan David Hampton, Earl of Northam, as he unravels a mystery…and the secrets of a woman’s heart.

None of the four friends are yet wed, though the wagers are on North — captivated by a most unique lady. Libby Penrose is wise, witty, beautiful, and quite determined to remain alone. But when the intrigues of a notorious jewel thief find them plotting together, a stolen kiss seals their fate as lovers — yet leaves North with more questions about Libby than answers.

Despite her vow to deny her deep attraction to this powerful, alluring man, Libby surrenders to the breathless desire he awakens. She could not have imagined the whirlwind events that would find North accused of a crime…nor her own confession that would save him — and compromise them both into matrimony. But sweet words of love remain unspoken and elusive. For Libby harbors a dark secret, one that threatens the untested bonds of her marriage. And soon fate will force her to make a harrowing choice: trust her husband…or lose him forever.

It took me about 100 pages to really get into this book. I wasn’t really concerned b/c the same thing happened when I read If His Kiss Is Wicked.

The story of the Compass Club begins with the Earl of Northam, known to his friends as North. The story of North and Elizabeth was captivating. Elizabeth was far from what you would expect from an Earl’s daughter. It was a bit frustrating at first b/c her secrets weren’t revealed until the 2nd half of the book. Waiting to reveal those secrets made Elizabeth seem somewhat cold and did not endear her to me at all. North also had a tendency to want to physically hit her, which I also didn’t like.

Other than those two things, I found myself engrossed in the story of these two. There is blackmail, greed, family estrangement. You name it. What was especially wonderful was that Goodman didn’t make it seem like two much was shoved in.

Overall, this was a great beginning to a great series.

Everything I Ever Wanted
4 out of 5

The toast of Drury Lane, actress India Parr has claimed the attention of London’s most impressive gentlemen – including the Prince Regent himself – with her talent and poise. Though her heart hasn’t been won, she is intrigued by the devilishly handsome South – yet equally determined to keep him from the dark, deadly secret that shadows her private life.

But South has other plans. A clever killer is afoot in London and he suspects India may be involved. Her charms have made her the confidante of many powerful men, and South intends to learn just how much she knows – by spiriting her away to a cottage where she will be safe from peril – but not from South’s powers of seduction. Now, night after night, in the name of justice, he plans to persuade India to reveal all…

What was interesting about this series was the timeline of the books were concurrent. While each man was immersed in a personal intrigue regarding the woman that he was falling for, it wasn’t enough to keep them apart. No matter what was happening, these four men would be there for each other.
When given his assignment by Colonel Blackwood, South has little notion that it will lead him to the woman that was meant for him. Though he is at first suspicious of her, his suspicions are soon laid to rest when he gets to know who India Parr really is.
India Parr has lost more than one person usually loses in a lifetime. Not used to having anyone champion her, India is at somewhat of a loss on what to make of the Viscount of Southerton. She soon realizes that South won’t be dispatched as easily as she had hoped. Though at first, she is leery of his intentions, it’s not long before she comes to depend on South.

This 2nd installment of the Compass Club was very satisfying. Giving more insight into not only the Compass Club, but their arch-enemies, the Society of Bishops, we soon realize that what is happening in the lives of the Compass Club may be related in the most unlikely of ways.

All I Ever Needed
4 out of 5

Lady Sophia Colley, daughter of the late Earl of Tremont, finds herself imprisoned in her own home by mercenary cousins who want her to marry the money her poor father failed to leave them. When the Marquess of Eastlyn arrives to rectify the false rumor that he and Sophie are engaged, the last thing he expects is to be entranced by her honey – hued eyes. East proposes on the spot, only to have Sophie turn him down flat.
But Sophie’s rejection of East is far from personal. In Fact, it’s all she can do to resist his charms… and her willpower is put to the ultimate test when he returns. The desire between them is impossible to deny, but deny it she must in order to protect East from a past intrigue that is about to place them both in very present danger. Now, they must work together in very close quarters, for only after they unravel a treacherous mystery will they be free to pursue the love of a lifetime…

When he finally arrives to dispel the rumor of their engagment, the Marquess of Eastlyn does not expect to find himself entranced by Lady Sophia Colley. When he does the honorable thing and proposes marriage, East is somewhat shocked when she turns him down flat.

It’s not long before East learns what Sophie’s reasons are for turning him down. Refusing any longer to accept her refusal, East does what he must to keep Sophie in his life. After returning to London with Sophie, East meets with the rest of the Compass Club to decide on how to bring the Society of Bishops down once and for all.

I really enjoyed Sophie and East’s book. Though Sophie is only trying to protect East, she’s not a matyr. She’s just a woman who is trying to protect the man she has come to love.

Beyond a Wicked Kiss
4.5 out of 5

Evan Marchman has just inherited a title, lands, and a fortune – but is miserable as the new Duke of Westphal, preferring the intrigue and adventures of the Compass Club to the responsibilities of an estate. More promisingly, he has also gained a ward – a beautiful woman who asks for his aid in unraveling a mystery that will drew them both into a world of hidden pleasures…

Headmistress of a ladies academy, Ria Ashby desperately needs West’s help to find a student who has disappeared without a trace. Yet she cannot help but be distracted by the promise of passion behind the duke’s green eyes and roguish grin. Soon their search for the missing girl leads them to a secret society comprised of the school’s board of governors – an inner sanctum where sensuality rules – and power seduces…

After inheriting the title from his late father, West wants nothing more than denounce his father and the title that goes with him. When he learns that he has a ward, no one is more surprised that West to find that his ward is none other than Ria Ashby.

When Ria comes to him begging him for help, West can do nothing other than help her. It doesn’t take long for him to figure out that Ria’s problem is intertwined with the Society of Bishops.

Though they were always sworn enemies of the Society of Bishops, the Compass Club soon realizes that they have come full circle. At one time young boys, now these young men must stop the Bishops from destroying innocent lives, including those of the women they love.

I loved this series. The only thing that makes me sad is that I have to cross four books off Jo Goodman’s backlist. My favorite of the series is tied between the 1st and the last. You’ll have to decide for yourself. I highly recommend this series (read in order, of course).

Dead Girls Are Easy by Terry Garey

Posted December 29, 2007 by Book Binge Guest Blogger in Reviews | 1 Comment

Nicki Styx—she was strictly goth and vintage, until a brush with the afterlife leaves her with the ability to see dead people.

Before you can say boo, Atlanta’s ghosts are knocking at Nicki’s door. Now her days consist of reluctantly cleaning up messes left by the dearly departed, leading ghouls to the Light . . . and one-on-one anatomy lessons with Dr. Joe Bascombe, the dreamy surgeon who saved her life. All this catering to the deceased is a real drag, especially for a girl who’d rather be playing hanky-panky with her hunky new boyfriend . . . who’s beginning to think she’s totally nuts.

But things get even more complicated when a friend foolishly sells her soul to the devil, and Nicki’s new gift lands her in some deep voodoo.

As it turns out for Nicki Styx, death was just the beginning.

This is gonna be a quickie review.

Nath had reviewed this on her blog. It looked interesting so I added it to my wishlist. My sister in law gave it to me for Christmas. For info on the plot, read Nath’s review.

I picked this book up last weekend to read just a one chapter. Next thing I knew I finished the book. It was a really light, fast, and fun read. I enjoyed it a lot and do plan on reading the other books in the series.

There was one teeny tiny part I was kind of, I don’t know. It didn’t bother me but it did. Joe is the guy who saves Nicki’s life. We find out he’s married but his wife kind of disappeared on him. He can’t find her for a divorce cause she’s out on some missionary work. It just so happens, she might be Nicki’s twin sister.

By the end of the book, I was hoping Joe would find his estranged wife so he could divorce her and continue to pursue Nicki. That would make for an interesting family reunion.

Grade 4/5.

Best of 2007: Heroines

Posted December 29, 2007 by Rowena in Features | 1 Comment

It’s that time of the day again, for us to post our Best Of post for the day and today’s post was a lot harder than the others because, we’re girls and we’re all about the hero lovin’…we don’t pay too much attention to the heroe’s significant other because let’s face it.

We’re imagining ourselves in their place but there were a few heroines that stood out from the rest of the heroines and we’ve each listed our favorites. I think it’s safe to assume that here at Book Binge, you won’t find those headstrong heroines who can’t sit back and let the hero shine for a bit on our Favorite lists, in fact, those are the heroines that we call….TSTL, or To Stupid To Live and those are the heroines that would make it on our Worst Of lists should we decide to do one but since we’re looking at the good sides of heroines, here’s our list of this year’s Best Heroines of 2007 for…us.

Rowena’s picks:

1. Melanie Monroe from Virgin River by Robyn Carr.
2. Rosie Dunne from Love, Rosie by Cecelia Ahern.
3. Bella Swan but ONLY from Twilight by Stephenie Meyer.
4. Jessica Trent from Lord of Scoundrels by Loretta Chase.
5. Heather Wells from The Heather Wells series by Meg Cabot.

There were plenty of books on my book log that I was like, oh heck yes I remember that hero and yeah he was hot stuff, I had more than 5 heroes to add to my list of faves but for the heroines, I had a hard time remember who was who and all that but the ones that really stuck out with me are the five that I’ve listed on my list. I liked each of these women for different reasons and I think they’re a great bunch of heroines, even though the older Bella got, the stupider she got but hey, we’re all dumb sometimes so I guess I’ll forgive Bella for Eclipse since I really liked her in Twilight and most of New Moon, so yeah she made my list.

Honorable Mentions go out to: Regan Madison from Julie Garwood’s Murder List, Gina Vitagliano from Suz Brockmann’s Breaking Point and Amelia Hathaway from Lisa Kleypas’ Mine til Midnight. These were some awesome heroines as well.

Holly’s picks:

Do I have any favorites? LOL

Ok, let’s see:

1) Brie from Shadow Mountain by Robyn Carr.
2) Eve Dallas from the In Death Series by J.D. Robb.
3) Jasmina Carson from Wanna Play by Gail Faulkner.
4) Lucy Craddock-Hayes from The Serpent Prince by Elizabeth Hoyt.
5) Jessica Trent from Lord of Scoundrel’s by Loretta Chase.

This was really hard for me, because I generally love to hate heroines. Luckily, there were a few great ones that came out this year (or that I re-read this year). Hopefully I’ll have just as much luck next year. 🙂

Isabel’s Picks:

1. Jessica Trent from Lord of Scoundrels by Loretta Chase.
2. Sadie from Broken by Megan Hart.
3. Esmeralda Fine from Nobody’s Darling by Teresa Medeiros.
4. Elle from Dirty by Megan Hart.
5. Melanie Monroe from Virgin River by Robyn Carr.

The heroines didn’t really stand out for me, I guess I was too wrapped up in the heroes.

Casee’s Picks:

1. Mel Monroe from Virgin River by Robyn Carr.
2. Emma Hathaway from If His Kiss is Wicked by Jo Goodman.
3. Scheme Tallant from Tanner’s Scheme by Lora Leigh.
4. Phoebe MacNamera from High Noon by Nora Roberts.
5. Riley Dawson from Atlantis Rising by Alyssa Day.

I have to give a few honorable mentions. First one is Brenna Kincaid in Caressed by Ice by Nalini Singh. Second honorable mention is Hannah Drake in Safe Harbor by Christine Feehan. Third (and final) honorable mention is Lacey Sebastian in Darkness Reborn by Alexis Morgan. It’s so hard to pick, but all of these heroines were really worthy of mentioning.

So there you have it, dear readers, who were your favorite heroines of 2007?

With All My Heart by Jo Goodman

Posted December 29, 2007 by Casee in Reviews | 1 Comment

Book description:

Grey Janeway had no past, at least one he could remember. But in the new West, a man’s past didn’t matter. What he made of himself did. And in the glittering gold -rush city of San Francisco, Grey was on his way to building his empire as the owner of a prosperous gaming house and hotel. When he encountered the spellbinding psychic whose eyes – and dazzling beauty – penetrated his soul, he knew he’d just struck gold. For while her special talent could draw more crowds to his hall, her tenderness helped fill another void. But as Grey was about to learn, everything had a price, including love.

Berkeley Shaw had the gift of second sight. Hired by Colin and Decker Thorne to find their missing brother, Berkeley left Boston and headed West – only to arrive in a city without mercy, where her abilities made her vulnerable to other people’s greed. But when fate swept her to Grey Janeway, a man with a reputation for getting everything he wanted, Berkeley not only discovered what she’d set out to find, but also a love that would demand all of her courage…and heart.

While this isn’t quite a lightening review, nor is it a “full” review.

This book had two storylines that I really dislike. The first one is amnesia. Generally, I really hate the amnesia storyline. There are exceptions of course (i.e. Mirror Image). The second storyline is specifically in historicals. The heroine, for one reason or another, is dressed up as a boy. I really dislike this storyline more than the amnesia one. Unfortunately there were both in this book. As I was reading it, I really wondered if the third (and final) book of the Thorne Brother Trilogy would be as good as the first two.

I’m happy to answer that with a resounding yes. It was everything that I’ve come to expect from Jo Goodman, even if I had my doubts while reading it.

Berkley Shaw was hired by Colin and Decker Thorne to find Graham Denison. Believing that Graham is the baby brother that they were separated from over 30 years before, they place almost all their hope in Berkley to find him. Though they are at first leery and suspicious of Berkley’s “skills”, she soon makes a believer out of both Colin and Decker when she recounts what happens in Cunningham’s Workhouse as Grey was adopted.

Berkley has long since wanted her psychic gift to remain secret. Unfortunately for her, her husband sees Berkley for the goldmine that she is. When they travel to San Fransisco in search of Grahan Denishon, Berkley finds herself abandoned when her husband greed forsakes all else. Fending for herself for weeks, she doesn’t quite believe her luck when faith places her in the path of Grey Janeway. Barely believing that he could actually be Graham Denison, Berkley accompanies Grey back to his hotel, The Phoenix.

Though the romance between Grey and Berkley does develop, I had problems with how it developed. It seemed at first as though Grey looked upon Berkley as a sister. Or a child. So I initially had a problem when he developed more carnal feeling for her. It seemed kind of yucky. What made me get past that yucky feeling is the time that passed between Grey’s parental and carnal feelings for Berkley.

Grey was highly doubtful of Berkley’s gift, though he wasn’t above using it for the good of his hotel. I thought this was highly believable b/c Grey was nothing, if not a business man.

I really liked how Goodman wove the tale of Grey and Berkley. Berkley kept her secrets, while Grey kept his. They soon both realize that keeping secrets is not worth the effort it takes, especially when there is so much to lose.

The reunion between the brothers was very satisfying to me. After reading the whole series, I was very happy with how it came to end.

I highly recommend this series (read in order, of course)

4.5 out of 5.

In keeping with yesterday’s our Best Heroes of 2007 post, today we’re going to be posting about our favorite authors of 2007.

With the many authors that are coming out each year, we’ve read our fair share of new authors, new to us authors and then we’ve also read our tried and true authors in which we absolutely love. In 2007 alone, many authors have had new books that we’ve read and our lists for today consists of the authors that we absolutely loved this year.

And now on with the lists…

Rowena’s List:

1. Stephenie Meyer.
2. Robyn Carr.
3. Loretta Chase.
4. Cecelia Ahern.
5. Tara Janzen.

I didn’t read too many new to me authors this year, I’m gonna have to change that next year because I read a lot of these authors back in 2006 so come 2008, I’m gonna try to branch out more and read more new to me authors, of the authors that I gave a go this year, my favorite of the bunch would have to be, hmmm probably a tie between Stephenie Meyer and Robyn Carr, their two series had me all in love with their characters, Robyn Carr did a fantastic job of keeping me in love with her characters and her storylines, where as Stephenie Meyer had me wanting to strangle Bella by Eclipse but I can’t hate SM for Eclipse because I love her too much for Twilight and New Moon. Great, GREAT Authors!

Isabel’s List:

1. Stephenie Meyer.
2. Robyn Carr.
3. Megan Hart.
4. Loretta Chase.
5. ???

I chose Stephenie Meyer even though Eclipse sucked!

Casee’s List:

1. Robyn Carr.
2. Jo Goodman.
3. Linnea Sinclair.
4. Alyssa Day.
5. Lara Adrian.

and finally…

Holly’s List:

1. Elizabeth Hoyt.
2. Jo Goodman.
3. Meg Cabot.
4. Nalini Singh.
5. Robyn Carr.

Honorable Mentions: Gail Faulkner, Deborah Smith and Meljean Brook. Each of these authors didn’t make my Top 5 list because I’ve only read one book by each (with the exception of MB, but I think I read her first book in ’06).

Alright readers, who are your favorite new to you authors of 2007?
