Andrew lay sprawled out in nothing but his jeans. Comfortable as the couch looked, he was too damn tall for it, and a dangerous tenderness stirred inside her. He was exhausted because he probably hadn’t slept a damn second of the fifteen hours she’d spent unconscious. Two straight days of driving, fighting and worrying, and the stubborn bastard wouldn’t even claim the bed when she was short enough to fit on the couch just fine.

Kat smoothed blond strands of hair from his forehead and smiled. “Hey, sleepy. Why don’t you get up and pass out someplace where your feet don’t dangle off the edge, huh?”

He mumbled something unintelligible and rolled over, almost pitching himself off the couch in the process. Kat planted both hands on his shoulders and pushed him back to the cushions. “Wake up, Andrew.”

His hands latched around her arms, and he lifted her clear off her feet and dropped her to the couch. The breath whooshed out of her, stealing her squeaked protest. When he loomed over her, his eyes were blank, dark. Unseeing.

Three heartbeats stretched out to a lifetime. Her stun gun was in the other room, but even if she had it in her damn hand she wasn’t sure she could have forced herself to use it on Andrew. Knowing it was futile, she couldn’t stop her hands from flying up, bracing against the dangerously hot skin of his chest. Pushing him was like trying to push a brick wall, and the first hint of real fear uncurled inside her. “Andrew–”

His eyes cleared, and a roar of fear eclipsed that tiny thread inside. His fear, not her own, though it vanished in the space of a heartbeat as Andrew released her. “Sorry, that was–sorry.”

She hadn’t expected her powers to recharge so quickly. After a burnout it could take days for them to come back online at full strength. Kat reinforced her shields to be safe, but didn’t move. She barely breathed. “I know better than to poke a shapeshifter when he’s asleep. It’s my fault.”

“No, it isn’t.”

Something inside her broke at the utter lack of self-forgiveness in his eyes. He looked exhausted. Worn out. “I was just going to let you know that I’m ordering some room service…and that you can take the bed. I’ll fit on the couch better than you do.”

He rubbed both hands through his hair and stood. “It’s a king. Plenty big enough for both of us.”

Share a bed with him? If she’d had a masochistic streak, maybe. Or if he was going to sleep in a parka. Fear had a funny way of waking up all of her nerves, and a lot of them seemed to be tracing the memory of his chest under her palms.

Which made her feel warm–and she could only hope it wasn’t an obvious kind of warm. “We’ll figure it out. You need to eat something before you go back to sleep. Wanna look at the room-service menu?”

Andrew shook his head. “Whatever you get is fine. I’m not picky.”

Kat swallowed and eased herself upright, then rose to her feet. “Okay, but if you leave me to my own devices, I’m ordering like, every expensive dessert on the menu.”

His smile didn’t reach his eyes. “Two for me.”

Maybe that was how she looked when she was shaking and scared that her empathy was a weapon that would destroy the people she loved. Not the mirror she’d expected to look into, but a powerful one.

So she did what he’d done. Reached up and framed his face with her hands, and shivered at the texture of his beard against her palms. “I will never be afraid of you, Andrew Callaghan.”

His chest heaved with shaking breaths, and he groaned as he grabbed her wrists. “It’s dangerous, Kat. I’m dangerous.”

“So am I.” She swiped her thumbs over his cheeks and willed him to believe the same words he’d told her the day before. “Andrew, I’m still mostly burned out, and you’ve got strong shields for someone who’s not a psychic. But I couldn’t just hurt you–I could destroy you. I could drive you to your knees and make you crawl for me. I could take away everything you are.”

He closed his eyes, but he didn’t release her. “Then that makes this a doubly bad idea.”

Andrew was going to walk away from her again, and the tense parts of her that had started to unwind over the last few days would shatter. The only way to save anything was to let him go before he came up with a polite, stilted reason. “I understand.”

“No. No, you really don’t.”

He bent his head and kissed her.

The world stopped.

Guest Author: Moira Rogers – Writing a Series Couple (+ Giveaway)

Posted September 6, 2011 by Holly in Giveaways, Promotions | 18 Comments

Today the writing duo who makes up Moira Rogers is here to talk about their current release, Cipher, and writing a series couple.

________________________

Thank you to the lovely ladies at The Book Binge for having me today! I’m Moira Rogers–or half of her, anyway. My name is Bree, and I’m the lucky lady who gets to write books with her best friend Donna, and have them published under the shared penname Moira Rogers. And today, I want to talk about how lucky we are to have the fourth book in our Southern Arcana series on sale in digital format today.

Writing a series is a terrifying and wonderful opportunity. The publishing industry is an uncertain place, and the simple act of having one book published can seem like a miracle. The first book in a series is something of a paradox. You have to write this first book and find it a home before you can plan for more–but it’s a whole lot harder to set the groundwork for future books after you’ve written the first one. In the end, it can be a leap of faith.

When Donna & I started writing the Southern Arcana books, we decided to take that leap. We planned out the first four books we’d love to write, and set the pieces in place for those four books to take place. In the first book in the series, Crux, someone breaks into the apartment of one of the secondary characters. It was a tiny detail, but it was one of the many ones we put there deliberately, knowing the day would come when that apartment break-in would set the stage for the fourth book in the series.

There are dangers in banking on a series when you’re just getting started. The biggest one is being afraid that you’ll set up something without having the chance to resolve it. But that fear never stopped us from charging forward.

The relationship that comes to a head in Cipher has been built across the last three books. In some ways, this couple have been with us the longest. We’ve been plotting and planning for them since before we wrote the first book, and seeing this book go on sale feels like the culmination of three and a half years worth of work. It’s exciting, and thrilling–and a little sad! It’s hard to be invested in characters for that long without a little bit of separation anxiety.

Of course this isn’t the end of the series. New characters beyond the first four couples have been introduced. We’ve contracted books five and six, and look forward to writing as many books as our readers and editor are interested in. But today we have to say goodbye to the first four couples we planned to make fall in love–and thank you to all the readers who made it possible for us to keep telling stories.

Review: Crux by Moira Rogers

Genres: Paranormal Romance

Holly’s review of Crux (Southern Arcana, Book 1) by Moira Rogers

Jackson Holt makes a decent living as a private investigator in New Orleans, home of one of the largest underground supernatural populations in the United States. He and his partners have never met a case they couldn’t crack…until a local bar owner asks him to do a little digging on her newest hire.

New Orleans is the fourth destination in as many months for Mackenzie Brooks, a woman on the run from a deranged stalker. After all, any man who shows up on her doorstep claiming to be her destined lover has more than a few screws loose. But crazy doesn’t explain why he always finds her no matter how far she runs.

When her well-meaning boss puts a PI on her case, Mackenzie comes face to face with the incredible truth: magic is real, and whatever spell has kept her hidden and separate from the paranormal world is rapidly deteriorating.

With time running out, she has no choice but to trust Jackson as he struggles to uncover the truth of her past-and her destiny.

Lately I’ve really been loving shifter books in general and Moira Rogers‘ shifter books in particular. My first book by them was Cry Sanctuary and I really enjoyed it. I was told this series is better than that one, however, and I think I may agree. I’m going to reserve judgment until the next book comes out.

Mackenzie’s life was pretty normal and boring until she met a crazy who claimed he was her soul mate and they must marry. That combined with all the crap he was spouting about magical abilities and a paranormal world convinced her it was time to get out of dodge. Now she’s been on the run for months. She’s tried, scared and ready to give up when she lands in New Orleans. She finds a job as a bartender and the owner realizes there’s something wrong. She asks PI Jackson Holt to check her out and make sure she’s ok.

Jackson doesn’t believe for a second that Mackenzie is as fine as she claims. Especially after seeing where she lives and sensing the fear inside of her. He senses something else inside of her, too. Something he can’t quite place, though he thinks she might be a shapeshifter. Together they start to unravel Mackenzie’s past, as well as the attraction between them. But there may be more to both than either of them ever imagined.

I’m really impressed with Moira Rogers so far. I really enjoyed the world and the two main characters, along with all the secondary characters.

Mackenzie was thrown into a new world it was hard for her to accept. Giving her several months of “wondering” if what she’d heard was true made her adjustment once she found out the real truth much easier to take. Although she got hit with an information overload, I think she dealt with it well.

Jackson was a sweet good-ole-boy. I really liked him and the way he dealt with Mackenzie. Something that bothered me, however, is the way it was alluded to that he the face he showed the world – a laid back kind of guy – wasn’t who he really was. Mahalia says he needs to see if Mackenzie can accept the real him. But..that was never explored. Other than the one mention, we didn’t see Jackson – either from his perspective or anyone else’s – as anything other than a sweet, laid back kind of guy.

Which brings me to the second problem I had with this book; Something about Jackson bothered me. I can’t quite put my finger on what, but I think it had something to do with the way he..not submitted to Mackenzie, but..I don’t know, deferred to her? He almost seemed like a beta hero at times.

Otherwise I enjoyed both him and Mackenzie. They were very well suited for each other, and I the chemistry between them was very well done. The secondary characters added additional flavor to the story, though they didn’t overwhelm the main protagonists. I’m definitely anxious to read more about them in the future.

This is a fast-paced, adventurous ride. Moira Rogers has an excellent talent for drawing me in and keeping me glued to the pages. Despite my few issues, I couldn’t put it down and can’t wait for the next book in the series.

Giveaway: Crux by Moira Rogers

Posted January 5, 2010 by Holly in Giveaways | 73 Comments

Happy New Release Tuesday! There are some really amazing books being released today. One I’m excited about is the print release of Crux, the first Southern Arcana book by Moira Rogers (look for a review later today or tomorrow).

Book Cover

Southern Arcana, Book 1

With time running out, she has no choice but to trust Jackson as he struggles to uncover the truth of her past—and her destiny.

Warning: This book contains devious schemes, epic battles, forbidden love between a shapeshifter and a spellcaster, nosy secondary characters, furniture-endangering sex and a woman fighting to choose her own destiny.

To celebrate, Moira Rogers has graciously offered a copy to us to giveaway. I’m going to take her copy and raise it 2..which means we now have 3 copies to giveaway!

If you’d like to be entered, simply leave a comment on this post telling us if you’ve read Moira Rogers before and why you want to win.

Contest ends at 11:59 p.m. Thursday, January 7, 2010. Winners will be announced shortly thereafter.
