A MAN OF SIN

Devastatingly handsome. Vain. Unscrupulous. Valentine Napier, the Duke of Montgomery, is the man London whispers about in boudoirs and back alleys. A notorious rake and blackmailer, Montgomery has returned from exile, intent on seeking revenge on those who have wronged him. But what he finds in his own bedroom may lay waste to all his plans.

A WOMAN OF HONOR

Born a bastard, housekeeper Bridget Crumb is clever, bold, and fiercely loyal. When her aristocratic mother becomes the target of extortion, Bridget joins the Duke of Montgomery’s household to search for the incriminating evidence-and uncovers something far more dangerous.

A SECRET THAT THREATENS TO DESTROY THEM BOTH

Astonished by the deceptively prim-and surprisingly witty-domestic spy in his chambers, Montgomery is intrigued. And try as she might, Bridget can’t resist the slyly charming duke. Now as the two begin their treacherous game of cat and mouse, they soon realize that they both have secrets-and neither may be as nefarious-or as innocent-as they appear . . .

Excerpt

“I was told you had need of me, Your Grace,” she reminded him, folding her hands at her waist to hide the trembling that had begun again. She’d been in demand before this position. Duchesses and lionesses of society had wanted her.

“So practical,” he mused, tilting his golden head back to gaze, presumably, at the gaudy sky-blue velvet canopy of his bed. She’d always thought it rather vulgar, actually. “I suppose that would be considered a good thing in a housekeeper.”

“It’s generally considered so, Your Grace.”

“And yet, I find it somewhat…”—he raised his naked arm straight up above his head and twirled his hand as he thought—“irksome.”

“I am sorry, Your Grace,” Bridget said as pleasantly as she could, which, sadly, was not very.

“Oh, don’t be,” the duke murmured silkily. “One can’t help one’s nature, no matter how irritating it is to others.”

His azure eyes suddenly dropped to pin her, hard and merciless, and she lost her breath as she fell into his predator’s stare. It was like looking into the eyes of something inhuman, almost otherworldly. Her chest ached as she stared at him, the air still locked within her, but at the same time the place between her legs ached as well.

Then she inhaled, filling her lungs with sweet air, as he watched her still, his eyes half-lidded, and she felt an odd exhilaration, as if a gauntlet had been thrown down. As if they were adversaries, equal on the field.

Which was completely ridiculous.

Possibly she shouldn’t have indulged in that third cup of tea this morning.

“I wonder whom you work for, Mrs. Crumb?” he whispered.

“Why, for you, Your Grace,” she replied, holding his gaze.

He snorted.

She felt a bead of perspiration trail down her spine.

He strode, nude, to his desk, and, bending over it, afforded her a quite scandalous view of his muscular bottom. He seemed to have a dark mark of some kind on the left cheek. Good God, it looked like a tattoo. What—? “Why, Mrs. Crumb,” he drawled, and she snapped her gaze belatedly up to find that he’d turned back to her—damn it! “Were you ogling my arse?”

She opened her mouth and then wasn’t sure, exactly, what to say. Was he about to dismiss her or not? “I…I—”

“Ye-es?” He took one long stride toward her.

She was suddenly, overwhelmingly aware of what she’d until now successfully ignored: He. Was. Nude.

His shoulders were wide, his chest highlighted by pale-pink nipples drawn tight, with but a few curling golden hairs between. His torso narrowed in a perfect V to a slim waist and a shallow belly button. A thin line of slightly darker hair led to his genitals.

During his supposed absence Bridget had had plenty of time to study the life-size nude portrait of the duke hanging next to his bed. She’d long thought the dimensions of his manhood exaggerated.

They were not.

She hastily glanced up to find him standing far too close to her, a wicked smile playing about his mouth.

“Oh, Mrs. Crumb, such a look,” he murmured, his voice a deep purr, his bare chest brushing against her snowy white apron. “Why, I don’t know whether to guard my bollocks…”—his gaze dropped to her mouth—“or to kiss you.”

For Olivia Bentley, Lucky Harbor is more than the town where she runs her new vintage shop. It's the place where folks are friendly to strangers-and nobody knows her real name. Olivia does a good job of keeping her past buried, not getting too cozy with anyone . . . until she sees a man drowning. Suddenly she's rushing into the surf, getting up close and personal with the hottest guy she's ever laid hands on.

Charter boat captain Cole Donovan has no problem with a gorgeous woman throwing her arms around his neck in an effort to "save" him. In fact, he'd like to spend a lot more time skin-to-skin with Olivia. He's just not expecting that real trouble is about to come her way. Will it bring her deeper into Cole's heart, or will it be the end of Olivia's days in little Lucky Harbor?

Olivia has been living in Lucky Harbor for about a year and she loves it. She has a store and loves filling it with beautiful things. She was once a child star but after her show was cancelled, and she went a little nutty, she decided to change her name and make a new life for herself out of the limelight. She would prefer that no one know that she was once Sharlyn Peterson but unfortunately that doesn’t happen.

One morning she’s out walking when she sees someone fall in the water at the harbor. She immediately jumps in to save them even though she doesn’t swim all that well. The person ends up being boat captain, Cole Donovan, and he certainly doesn’t need saving. Cole ends up trying to save Olivia from hypothermia and the pair get a little cozy in the boat while trying to warm up. Olivia tries her bet stay away from Cole as she doesn’t need any complications in her life but she keeps running into him. Cole finds himself wanting to be near Olivia and makes a point of seeking her out.

Olivia has issues from her past. Her real family isn’t something to brag about but the people who she considered family, the people she worked with on the set, all abandoned her once her show ended. She felt betrayed and knows that even if she gets something going with Cole he’ll walk away. Despite those thoughts Olivia finds herself falling for Cole in a big way. The problem is that he’s an incredibly honest guy and Olivia’s been lying to him about who she is from the start. When he finds out can he forgive her and move past it all?

Another great story from Jill Shalvis! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – Lucky Harbor is one of my favorite series! The individual characters as well as the couples they make are so realistic and readable that I can’t seem to get enough of them.

In this story I never really saw Olivia and Cole getting together. Olivia had too many issues with family and people leaving her that I thought she would never open her heart to Cole. Cole had some issues as well, with his fiancé falling in love with his best friend, etc. He had trust issues, to say the least. When Olivia wasn’t coming out with the whole truth and nothing but the truth I saw the relationship slowly crumbling. I knew that Cole was going to take issue with her lying and of course, he did. The way that Shalvis had him working through it all surprised and thrilled me. She took his self-discovery in a direction I never would have thought of, but really enjoyed. Olivia finally came to terms with her past as well and that was something I wasn’t sure she could fully do.

The couples in Lucky Harbor all seem to help each other grow and that’s something I love reading. On top of that Shalvis gave us wonderful humor in this story that had me smiling throughout.

Overall, a fine addition to the series. I can’t seem to get enough of LH and can’t wait for the next book.

This book looks really good. Check it out:

Blurb

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Lynsay Sands comes a classic short story of a knight in need of a bride …
Lady Alice knows she is not the type to entice a man. She’s too voluptuous, too intelligent, too strong minded. Why, she even reads! But then Jonathan, Earl of Fairley, arrives at court. Tall, dark and handsome, the knight is any woman’s dream. And he has just been ordered by the king to find a bride … and Alice is to help him!

Jonathan has been evading his mother’s matchmaking schemes for years, so why does she insist that Lady Alice isn’t for him? Alice is only to aid in his search for a bride, yet Jonathan can’t help but be distracted by her glorious hair—the color of a sunset—and a figure that is like a lush berry about to burst to full ripeness … Has Jonathan fallen prey to love?

Teaser

“Are you all right?”

Alice glanced up in surprise at the concern in Lord Jonathan’s voice. He wasn’t looking at her; his gaze was traveling down her body in the wake of his hands as he checked her over to be sure she wasn’t injured. She flushed at the familiar way his fingers skimmed over her, and took a quick step back, nearly tumbling again.

“I am fi-fine,” she got out a little breathlessly as he caught her arms to steady her. “Really,” Alice added when he continued to look concerned. After a brief pause, he swallowed and nodded, then turned to grab at the reins of his mount.

Her gaze moved distractedly back to the small swatch of blue cloth on the ground by her feet. She was about to draw Jonathan’s attention to it, when she was suddenly caught by the waist and lifted onto his horse.

Alice promptly began to protest. “Oh, really, my lord. There is no need for us to ride. I can walk back to the clearing. I—”

At last she gave up her protests, mostly because he was ignoring her. He mounted in front of her and drew her hands around his waist.

“Hold on,” he instructed.

Alice nodded against his back, breathing in deeply to try to steady her nerves. It was rather novel to be in such close proximity to a man. She had never done so before. Unmarried women were simply not allowed such familiarity. Of course, this was an unusual circumstance, and…
Her thoughts died as she breathed in the scent of him. He smelled of the woods and the river and…male. It was a surprisingly pleasant mix, she decided, breathing it in again as her fingers interlocked at his middle. Feeling the muscles of his stomach bunch and ripple, she flattened her fingers over them to get the full sensation, then, realizing what she was doing, stopped breathing in embarrassment. Her fingers stilled.

Of course, Alice couldn’t go long holding her breath. She managed to do so for the short ride back to the clearing, but there the breath left her in a slow hiss. The place was empty. Lady Fairley and her uncle had not waited for them; they had apparently ridden on ahead. Alice recalled the small swatch of cloth she had spotted near the horses and pondered silently, wondering why Lady Fairley had been by the horses. Surely she hadn’t untied Alice’s mount and let it go? Had she really been so annoyed with Alice as to wish to have her walk back to the castle?

“Well, we shall have to ride quickly to catch up,” Lord Jonathan said.

Alice glanced at the back of his head, then pressed close and held on tightly as he spurred his mount into a trot. She didn’t hold her breath this time. Instead she sat, her breasts pressed against his back, her hands clutched at his front, breathing in deeply of his scent. She was enjoying it so much, it took her most of the ride to realize that despite his words, Jonathan wasn’t trying very hard to catch up to her uncle and his mother. He had the horse going at a trot, but a rather slow one, really. They had ridden here faster. She was so startled by the realization that she loosened her hold and started to pull away, but he stopped her by catching her hands with one of his own.

“You had best hold on,” he said. “I would not wish to see you fall.”

Alice wondered at the husky note to his voice, but decided to merely enjoy the ride. She relaxed against him.
