Renee’s review of Day of the Dragon by Rebecca York

Beautiful archaeologist Madison Dartmoor unearths an astonishing find, one of vast importance to a handsome stranger—a man who is not human, and who holds a dangerous secret that may break her heart.

I was really excited to read Day of the Dragon. I love me some dragons—and dragon shifters— and I’ve been meaning to read more of Rebecca York’s Moon series, after enjoying Night Season a couple of years ago. Yet, as optimistic as I was starting the book, I had to put the book down after 100 pages.

The plot itself was interesting: Madison discovers something on an archaeological dig that mysterious bad guys are determined to get their hands on; a brooding and wounded Ramsay, a dragon shifter, is drawn to Madison and wants to find out more about her discovery.

Yet, unfortunately, I never could fully like either Madison or Ramsay.

Ramsay’s high-handed ways came across less as Alpha-ness, and more like creepiness. When they go to his hotel room after he averts a kidnap attempt on Madison, he begins to glamour her to find out more about her discovery. Once he begins to get information from her, he continues to work his mojo:

“I’m so sorry,” he said, sliding closer, moving slowly. When he reached for her, she stiffened for a moment, and he sent her calming thoughts.
It’s ok. You like me. You trust me. You want me to hold you. You want to be in my arms.
She made a small sighing sound, then relaxed.
“It feels like we’ve know each other for a long time,” he murmured.
“Yes.” ……He had taken her in his arms because he wanted information from her, but holding her was interfering with his ability to think clearly as lust clouded his brain. Or maybe “need” was a more polite word. He’d left himself unfulfilled last night. He knew that was part of the problem. The fragmenting of his abilities was another.
The Ramsay Gallagher of old would have been in complete control of this situation. Now he couldn’t even tell exactly what she was feeling.
She raised her head, staring at him, the mixture of intense heat and confusion on her face making his throat tighten.
“What are we doing? she whispered.
“Getting to know each other better.”
“We can’t…do this.”
“Why not?”
“I just met you.”
“We won’t do anything you don’t want to do.” How many times had he used that line, knowing he was a master of swaying a woman’s decision?

He later goes on to think that if she recoils, he would pull away (she doesn’t), but given how much he’s already glamored her, her judgment was already impaired. For me, even though they didn’t end up having sex due to an interruption, this smacked more of coercion and less of romance.

As for Madison, she was passive to the point of inertia. This was partly due to Ramsay’s “glamouring” of her to make her go along with his plans. But, it was also that she repeatedly had this thought process of: “Oh, I shouldn’t do this.” Then, “Well, ok, I’ll do it” without any real motivation other than that was where the plot needed to go.

In an effort to escape the bad guys, they run to his remote lair, which is outfitted with security cameras (he creepily watches her while she sleeps, of course) and a secret bomb shelter/underground cave/Indian ceremonial chamber. No, seriously. The book hit the wall when he suggests that they will learn more if she puts on a Native American leather shift he just happened to have around (he has a matching loincloth), they inhale ceremonial herbs to “open (their) minds”, and go on a “visionquest”. And, her reaction? She doesn’t even question him on the out-there randomness of this suggestion. She just says, “Okay, let’s do it.”

At this point, I found that I couldn’t go on, even trying to read it as a light, campy, wtf kind of read.

DNF. For what I did read 2 out of 5

Have any of you read books by Rebecca York? Are there ones that you’d recommend?

Year of the Category Challenge Review: Phantom Lover by Rebecca York

Posted March 24, 2009 by Tracy in Discussions | 5 Comments

In the darkened bedroom of Ravencrest, Bree Brennan was seduced by an unseen lover. A lover whose scorching kiss was strangely familiar. Was her midnight caller Troy London, her onetime love, or was it the mythical ghost who haunted the cliffside, windswept estate on the California coast?

A P.I., Bree had come undercover to Ravencrest to find its owner, Troy, and ensure his well-being. But Bree knew she was out of her league the moment she saw its dark rock spires and its creepy inhabitants who claimed a crazy Troy was prisoner in his own chambers. But Bree heard his husky voice, felt his sizzling touch…Exactly who was weaving an undeniable, erotic spell around her?

Bree has been asked to act as a teacher to Troy London’s daughter, Dinah, by Troy’s sister Helen. Bree is anxious to get to Ravencrest because she’s been in love with Troy for 7 years but hasn’t seen him in as long. But when she gets to Ravenscroft she finds that she doesn’t understand anything that’s going on.

The “cousins” of Troy and Helen who are supposedly taking over the house because Troy has had a nervous breakdown are just strange. Bree’s not sure what to make of them. The lady of the pair, Nola, can’t stop talking about a ghost from 100 years ago and its supposed sexual exploits. Then there’s her belligerent husband, the super nice housekeeper and the scarier than hell groundskeeper. If that’s not weird enough she’s kissed in the middle of the night. Is it a dream or reality, she can’t tell.

When Bree starts looking for Troy because he’s just never around, she finds him, but he sounds confused and he never wants her to look at him. He comes up to her from the back and holds her so she can’t look at him. Then there are these weird special powers that Troy has that are freaking Bree out and she’s not sure what to make of them.

This was a strange bizarre book. About 18 months ago I bought about 15 Harlequin intrigues from a garage sale for $1.00. I hadn’t read any of them. Yikes. So when it was time to pick a category for this month’s challenge I started reading the backs of the books to try to decide which one to pick. This is the one I chose, obviously, but I’m not sure I chose wisely. The book wasn’t bad per say, but it just wasn’t my thing. I guess I was expecting more of a straight contemporary suspense story but this definitely had paranormal elements.

I do have to say that the book did keep me guessing until the last 1/3 of the book. I didn’t know who the mastermind behind the scheming was and why they were scheming. That was done very well. I was never quite sure what was going on with Troy because his character was so vague. As Bree was thinking – did he get hit on the head and now he has these weird psychic powers? Was he a ghost? What? It truly wasn’t ever answered but it ended with a acceptable enough conclusion. And Bree – I just couldn’t connect with her – determined one minute, flighty the next…it just didn’t’ work for me.

That being said…if you like odd, bizarre tales of suspense this might work for you. Written well, just not my type of book.

What I’ve Been Reading This Week

Posted March 16, 2009 by Tracy in Features | 10 Comments

My friends! How are you? How was your week? Whatcha up to? Tell me everything.

So as I said in my post a few days ago it was a nutty week and I didn’t post much – hopefully that will change for the upcoming week.

Talking to Christine earlier this past week and discussing our massive TBR’s I made a decision. The decision is that since I tend to ignore older books on my tbr (not intentionally there are just so many good ones that get released that I tend to forget the poor lonely ones on my shelves) I’m going to try to read 1 book a week that has been on my shelf for 3 months or longer. And there are plenty to choose from. The keyword here is try. We’ll see how it works out.

My girls went to one of the local high schools yesterday and they had a 3 hour cheer clinic with a little demonstration at the end. It was so cute and the girls had a great time. They now want to be cheerleaders and learn how to do all the acrobatics that go with it. We’ll see how they feel about it when they get into high school which is a while away now…thank heavens.

My youngest was sick this past Monday so that gave me plenty of time to read as she slept most of the day while I was home with her. I thanked her for being ill on a Monday since I had already cleaned the house on the weekend I didn’t have chores to do and could relax.

First up was Desire Unchained by Larissa Ione. Great book. I loved it and couldn’t put it down. Luckily I didn’t have to. If you haven’t started the series yet you should do so now. lol I liked the first book but this was fabulous and I can’t wait until the next one -and luckily we don’t have to wait long since it comes out on March 31, 2009.

Next up was Slave by Cheryl Brooks. After reading Ms. Moonlight’s review and seeing that Jenb loved it as well I decided to dive in. I’m sorry to say that this one just didn’t work for me. It was a good story and that’s what kept me reading but there were several things that just rubbed me wrong. It’s a first person pov which I’m not a fan of but have read some really great books lately that have it so I was open to it. This was an great example of why I don’t like them. The endless thinking and self examination in the book was driving me slightly batty. Captain Jack wasn’t a character that I enjoyed and having only her pov was frustrating at times. I wanted to get to know the male character, Cat, more as well but that didn’t happen – couldn’t happen with the pov. There were a few other things that didn’t appeal to me but I’ll stop there. 🙂

After that I read Collision Course by K.A. Mitchell. I really liked this book a lot. A great m/m story of Aaron, an independent paramedic and Joey, a accident prone man who seems to go through men like bottles of water. I thought the story was wonderfully well written, the sex was hot and the characters were likable.

Next I read Delicious by Sherry Thomas and it was just that…delicious. I loved it. I read some reviews when it first came out last fall and they were definitely mixed on the like/dislike scale. I’m definitely in the like category. A wonderful story of love found and then lost and then found again. I found myself smiling for a couple of hours after I read the last page.

Cowgirl Up and Ride by Lorelei James was my next read. This is book 3 in her Rough Riders series. The story of AJ who has been in love with Cord since she was a little girl. While it was more like hero worship when she was a kid now that she’s an adult she’s got her eye on the prize. But with Cord pretty much off relationships after his wife left him AJ has to be satisfied with just sex. Oh darn. lol Fortunately there was a good story in here as well as all that sex and I also got to know the rest of Cord’s extended family. I’m axious to read more.

Amber Eyes by Maya Banks was my next book. Good book – I’ll post a review this week.

Angels’ Pawn by Nalini Singh was next. The prequel to Angels’ Blood was great. It left me with some great questions about Ashwini but I have no doubt that Nalini will answer them eventually. And Janvier? omg – totally hot vamp. lol

Kiss of Fate by Deborah Cooke is one I read for The Book Binge so I’ll let you know when my review posts.

Last was Phantom Lover by Rebecca York that I read for the Year of the Category Challenge so you won’t get that review until next week, sorry. 🙂

Happy Reading!
