This book was like a train wreck for me. I was laughing (and more in the I can’t believe that just happened way), gasping & OMGing in a constant succession. Let me attempt to explain.
Pirate Captain Serpente, otherwise known as Snake, won Isabella in a card game. Her dad refused to pay up and took off with his then 16 year old daughter. Three years later Snake found Izzy and her father, kidnapped her and took her to his ship where he planned to do all sorts of nasty things to her.
Ok, first of all, Izzy’s father gives Snake a miniature of his daughter so that he can see what he might get if he wins the poker hand. Three years later Snake is still looking at this picture of Izzy. I know that we’re supposed to see that it’s 3 years later and that she’s now 19 (and this is a historical and they always did things younger then) but when Snake is imagining what he’s going to do to Izzy he gazing at a 16 year old. That’s just wrong IMO! Then when Snake kidnaps Izzy he gets pretty violent with her while doing the kidnapping but eventually gets her to his ship. He then forces her perform fellatio saying that if she bites him he’ll screw her on the deck, tied up while his crew watches. Niiiiiice. Did I mention while she’s performing she’s still tied up??? What a guy. When she’s untied and she tries to get away he drags her back and spanks the crap outta her (and not in an erotic way) and then can’t stand the sight of her tears because he doesn’t like to think she’s hurt. Here’s where I implant a huge OMG!
When he finally decides that it’s time to do the ultimate dirty deed and take her virginity she says she can’t because they’re not married. He’s arrogantly possessive so he takes her and makes the first mate, who just happens to also be a priest (pirate priest, that’s a new one for me) and makes him marry them. He then takes her back to his cabin and ruthlessly & sometimes painfully screws her senseless – but she strangely…feels safe. He’s thinking, I’m being ruthless but I just don’t care and then her tears, again, cut him to the quick. Insert WTF here.
The next day the ship hits land and Izzy escapes. Snake, whose real name is Dantel, finds her at her aunt and uncles house. As much as she fights she realizes that she can’t stop thinking about him and actually loves the pirate. He loves her as well and they live happily ever after. I’m sure there are people out there who might enjoy this book because they like the violent side of the erotic as well as a jerk hero and TSTL heroine, but I’m just not one of them.
In the end this book did NOT work for me at all.
