Guest Reviews are Up, Up and Away

Posted April 7, 2009 by Tracy in Reviews | 1 Comment

Two of my guest reviews are now posted on The Book Binge.

First we have a short I read a while back called How Wicked-er Can She Go by J. Morgan:

Go Wild, Get Wicked! Nikki is as wicked as they come.

Yeah, right — She’s the wickedest witch you’ll ever meet, if “wicked” means perky as all get out, and living off a trust fund. When her boss lays down the law, she actually has to work for a living and her world comes tumbling down. Ruining an uber geek’s chance to find true love sounds easy until Gregory Hamilton shows up on her doorstep. He may be a nerd, but one look tells her this is a man with super stud possibilities.

Turning on her inner wicked, Nikki does everything she can to prove true love ain’t all it’s cracked up to be.

You can go here for the review.

Then we have The Secret Wedding by Jo Beverley:

When is a rake not a rake? When he’s seducing his wife? Home from a decade of war, Christian, Major Lord Grandiston wants to enjoy bachelor pleasures, but his father is wooing a rich woman on his behalf. Embarrassing, when he might already have a wife. Is Dorcas Froggatt alive, and if so, will she be his salvation or an even worse burden? He heads north to the industrial town of Sheffield to find out, but soon he’s on the run from the law with a woman who’s nothing but trouble, especially when they’re joined by a very peculiar cat.

Nikki is a pretty lazy witch. She get checked up on from time to time by the areas “head witch” from New Orleans but she pretty much just does what she wants, which is not a whole lot.

When her “head witch”, Melina, sends her lackey to check up on Nikki it’s less of a check up and more of a directive. She’s on automatic probation due to the fact that she’s not pulling her weight and she’s definitely not wicked enough – if she doesn’t help the clients that Melina sends she will be sent home to live with her mother, which from what I understand is a fate worse than death for an independent witch.

Nikki doesn’t have a choice so she decides to do what she can for the client. The client, Gregory, shows up and he wants to find true love…that one person who was meant for him. Nikki’s wicked job is to make Gregory think he’s going out to find his true love when really all she’s doing is making him hate women forever. The problem is that Nikki finds herself attracted to Gregory and is regretting sending him out with his fake charms and potions.

This was a hard book for me to enjoy. It’s told in the first person and Nikki, whose personality is supposedly perky, is more sarcastic and snarky, at least to me. She tricks Gregory into having sex with her twice, which he enjoyed, but the whole lying to him bit bugged me. Then she feels regret for lying to him about the potion and charm working to find his true love, but not about the sex part. When she decides that she’s in love with him after three days it was a bit over the top.

For Gregory’s party he didn’t seem to be into Nikki at all (although it’s always hard to tell in books that are first person pov). In fact he got up and left right after having sex with Nikki both times. When Nikki confessed her feelings to him (which seemed more of an infatuation than love) he was incredulous and could only say, “But you’re a witch!” Later he states that in truth he couldn’t stop thinking about her but I still wasn’t equating this with true, lasting love which what I think that author was going for.

Nikki does have a little fun with her magic trying to get a woman away from Gregory that I thought was cute but it wasn’t enough to make the book a great read for me.

Guest Review: Elfing Around by J Morgan

Posted December 2, 2008 by Book Binge Guest Blogger in Reviews | 1 Comment

Tracy‘s review of Elfing Around by J Morgan.

Making the Naughty List is an Elfing good time!

It’s December 23rd and Essie is far from the North Pole. She’s an elf outta’ luck: Her equipment fails and she’s arrested by the local Barney Fife. She’s willing to risk making Santa’s Naughty List if it nabs her the sheriff of her dreams.

The only way out of trouble is through it, and Essie’s elfish mix of nice and naughty can make it happen. Love, North Pole style, would wrap this adventure up with a shiny red bow. It’ll take a holiday miracle to bless the by-the-book sheriff and a down-on-her-luck elf.

Essie, one of Santa’s Elves, gets arrested in a small town for being a a prostitute. I mean why else would she be out in an elf suit at 9:30pm??

She’s just in town to check out to make sure Santa’s Naughty & Nice list is correct when her cloaking Equipment fails. While she’s in the Sheriff’s station she meets Dalton, The Sheriff, and tries to come up with a believable story as to why she’s walking around town dressed like an elf. Dalton thinks she has nowhere to go so he tells her she can stay in his spare room for the night.

Well once they get back to Dalton’s house things heat up. Unfortunately Santa does a little interrupting, but it’s all good in the end.

This was a pretty cute, creative holiday short story. Dalton is a kind man and feels a connection to Essie immediately. Essie is having some serious naughty thoughts about Dalton but human/elf relations are strictly forbidden. Dalton and Essie have a bit too much of any instomatic love for me, but I was able to suspend belief and things all work out in the end.

What I’ve Been Reading This Week

Posted December 1, 2008 by Tracy in Features | 17 Comments

Hey there, hi there, ho there,

It has been a crazy week. I know I said it before, but thank you all so much for your support at the beginning of the week with the death of that little boy. You all are amazing people and I’m so happy to have you “met” you all! 🙂 The family is still pretty hysterical. We did find out from the coroner that it wasn’t suffocation as previously believed but they haven’t said what it actually was. Still waiting.

Thanksgiving was wonderful. We went to my in-laws for an early meal (they live about an hour and a half away) and then went to eat with my family (who were about an hour and a half away from the first place but only a 1/2 hour from my house). It was great being with the whole family for the day, but very tiring. That was the first time we’d tried to do 2 fams in 1 day for Thanksgiving and it’s probably our last! lol I hope you all had a wonderful day!

I just went and saw Bolt with my kids. They loved it – so glad. It was ok but not fabulous for the parents, IMO. Could have been the pounding headache I have but I can’t be sure. 🙂

Ok – so on to what I read.

First off was The Demon King and I by Candace Havens. It was ok – not great. Just an eh for me. If you didn’t see my previous post and want to read my review go here.

Next up was The Viscount Who Loved Me by Julia Quinn. Yes, I’m totally into the Bridgerton’s and am reading them all. I probably will be reading a lot of them in the next few weeks since a local friend got them all from the library and is passing them on before they’re due. Unfortunately she reads like friggin lightening so they’re starting to back up on me! lol Anyway, loved Anthony’s story. The man was just killing my heart there for a while but Kate brought him through! Loved the book.

Next I read a couple of short stories for review on The Book Binge. A Pirates Hellion by Jaden Sinclair and Elfing Around by J Morgan. The reviews should be up sometime soon. The first one – horrid. The second a cute Christmas tale.

Then I read Slippery When Wet by Kimberly Raye. I will be doing a review on this soon – keep your eyes peeled!

Get A Clue by Jill Shalvis. Jill Shalvis has been recommended to me and I just had to see what all the fuss was about. I have to say when I started the book I was wondering if I was gonna like it but after about 10 pages I was completely hooked. Cute story about a woman jilted at the altar and the funny/bizarre happenings when she goes on her honeymoon alone. Oh and it has a hunky cop too – you gotta love it.

Nikki had given me the Virgin River series by Robyn Carr with the instruction that I HAD to read them! They’ve sat there for a couple of weeks so I decided to dive it. I started with Virgin River and let me tell you it was great. I truly enjoyed delving into the different lives and loves of the people of this small moutain town. Great story telling and a pretty darn good romance – 2 things I don’t like to pass by.

I honestly can say that as much as I loved Virgin River I had absolutely no intention of immediately starting Shelter Mountain which is book 2 in the Virgin River series. But, I made the mistake of reading the excerpt in the back of VR, which was chapter 1 of SM, and I was once again hooked. SM was just as good as book 1. I really like this series a lot. To save myself I did not read the excerpt for the next book when I finished SM even though I really wanted to. Book 3 is stting on my shelf I’ll try to stay away for a few days!

Oh and I didn’t blog hop all week and I’m almost going through withdrawal so hopefully I’ll be catching up this week with everyone!
Happy Reading!
