“Daniel.” She poked him. “Wake up.”

“Why?” he mumbled.

“Three hours are up.” “No. I had another short dream. I had time left.” He rolled to sit up, and the cold air got under the blankets.

“I don’t think so. Maybe time moves differently in your ’Verse. But here we use chronos. Mine says our three hours have passed.” He got out of bed, grabbing his pants and pulling them on.

“And even if you did have a short time left, you needn’t be so cross.”

“I have a very good internal chrono.”

He went to wash his face and noted his skin had gone very pale and his hair very dark. After the pills kicked in, his eyes had gone from green to brown. He added a scar on his neck, leading up to his ear.

She barged around the corner to continue pestering him. “You’re a pain in the—” Her eyes widened. “You’re very good at this disguise part of the job. I should cut my hair, don’t you think?”

His gut cramped at the thought. “It’s very beautiful,” he saidbefore he could say something sane and professional. “I mean, you’d still be beautiful with short hair and—”

She put two fingers over his lips and froze, before moving her hand away. Then she pressed her mouth to his. He hadn’t expected it, but he couldn’t step away either.

Her lips were sweet, sweet as the kiss was. A soft exploration of his mouth with hers. At first. It wasn’t so much innocent as it was unexpected. It snared him, much like her taste had. She was warm against him, relaxed, obviously trusting him more than any rational woman should have. His blood surged with need for her, with want, demand for more.

He fisted his hands to keep from hauling her against him, from stroking the elegant curve of her spine down to her ass. A groan bub- bled from deep within his gut at the memory of the fantasy he’d had the day before. She sighed, taking it into herself.

It was when she stepped closer, her fingers digging into the front of his shirt, molding herself to his body and her tongue sliding into his mouth, that he finally found his sanity about a meter from where all the blood in his body had gathered.

“Seven hells,” he gusted as he set her back from him, holding her upper arms firmly. “That can’t happen again.” Her mouth called to him, those luscious lips just so slightly swollen.

“Why?” She licked her lips, and he groaned. “Stop that. Carina, this is a bad idea.” A smile played on her lips as she realized the extent of her power.

Gods, he was in trouble now.

“Why? Really? You kissed me back. You’re attracted to me. I can see it. I can taste it.” She pressed fingers to her lips, and he struggled to breathe.

“You’re my cargo. You have something that could save the lives of millions. You’re . . . I bet you’re untouched, aren’t you?” He forged on without an answer. “I’m not. I’m not a nice man. I kill people. All the time. You need a nice man. A gentle man who can give you the life you were bred for.”

She waved a hand as she turned. He took advantage of her distraction and headed back out toward the main room.

“Where are you going? I need your help with my hair,” she called out.

“Tell me when to come back there.” He scrubbed his hands through his hair, standing it on end.

“Now. Gods, did your mother drop you on your head a lot as a child?”

“You’re pretty mouthy,” he mumbled as he headed around the corner and found her in little more than sheer underclothes. “Hey!” He turned his back. “You’re naked. I said when you were ready.”

“You’ll get hair in my clothes and it will itch. Cut it short.” She handed him shears as he turned back around and tried in vain not to look at the shadow of dark pink nipples against the pale material.

“Are you sure about this?” He sifted fingers through it, so long and soft. Beautiful and feminine. “If you braid it, you can tuck it into a watch cap, and no one will know the difference. Women of all ranks have long hair. You don’t have to cut it.”

She turned, so close she brushed against him. “Women of all classes have short hair, too. Do you like it?” Tossing her head, pale burnt-sugar hair tumbled around her shoulders.

The scent of her choked him in the best kind of way. This chemistry between them was so very delicious, even if he knew anything else between them was totally impossible.

“It’s lovely. It’s up to you.” He tried to step back, but he was boxed in, and she knew it.

“I am a virgin, you know. But that doesn’t mean I don’t have desires.” She leaned in, brushing her cheek against his chest. His cock ached, the pulse as he got harder and harder was an angry throb. “I do. Have desires, that is. I’ve never had the opportunity to express them and certainly not with anyone like you. There’s no one quite like you, Daniel.”

“You’d do well to remember that, Carina.” He pointed to the stuff he’d left on a ledge near the basin. “You’re my sister again. We’ll call you Carrie, and I am Neil. We’re itinerant workers, looking to get on with the grain shipments. Do you know anything about wheat? It’s a crop brought from Earth, and I know it’s grown out here. We’re from Suerte.”

He managed to step neatly away once she’d turned to look. “I always wanted blue eyes.” She began to plait her hair into two long braids as she spoke. “I’ll keep it long for now. And I’m very well aware that there’s no one like you. This isn’t over.”

She wanted to laugh when he scurried from the room. An altogether new sort of power surged through her veins. Her allure as a woman wasn’t new, not really. But this sort of romantic chase, the sensual dance they did as he pretended to resist her, was something she’d never imagined, and it was thrilling.

If she had to risk her life, leave her family behind and hare off into new territory with a man like him, she planned to enjoy every moment of it.

Guest Author: Lauren Dane – Characters

Posted July 15, 2010 by Holly in Giveaways, Promotions | 32 Comments

Insatiable (Federation Chronicles, Book 3)Today Lauren Dane is here to talk about her latest release, Insatiable, and her characters, Daniel and Carina.

_________________

Thank you so much for having me guest with you today!

Over the years I’ve written all sorts of characters. At the end of each book I love them all, usually for different reasons. Some of them are easy to write. Polly Chase for instance. She pretty much writes the scene herself. Other characters take me a while to warm up to and figure out.

I can write a synopsis or outline for my characters, and I do write book synopses to plot the basic outline of the story. I can say to my editor that the characters are—for instance—a rabble rousing attorney and the leader of the Federated Universes. I can tell her the book will be about two seemingly opposite people finding they’re not so different after all. I can tell her the story is about a former principal ballet dancer and a tattoo artist, but what I won’t know for some time after I start writing is just why and who these characters are and how that intersects with what makes them do what they do.

So when I began writing INSATIABLE I knew who Daniel was because I’d began to write him in RELENTLESS. But I didn’t know all that motivated him. That came as I wrote the book. But he was easier for me because I’d had time with him on the page before.

The other end of the spectrum is Carina. I’d originally imagined her as a cool, icy bitch. But as I wrote her, I realized she wasn’t that at all. Each page I wrote, she came to life for me more.

She’s unlike most other characters I write in that she’s an incredibly sheltered woman. So much so that she’s a virgin and I’ve only written one other virgin before back in A TOUCH OF FAE. But Carina isn’t silly or naïve at all. She understands the world, understands the particular suffering of her people in a way Daniel can’t though he’s exposed to it as well.

So I had to write a virgin princess and give her an edge. What would she mean to Daniel and how could I create that spark and tension between them to make it real for readers?

In the end, she revealed herself to me slowly, almost shyly, but persistently. She is not fragile, though she’s leaving everything she’s ever known behind. She is tough. She is intelligent and she never gives up on what she wants, which, over time, includes Daniel.

She’s resilient and steadfast and she loves Daniel and won’t be separated from him. He’s totally taken off guard by her, she keeps him off balance and he doesn’t know what to make of her, but he knows enough to admire and respect and as the time passes, to love. She isn’t what he expected at all, but they click because they’re right for each other, no matter how unexpected each was to the other.

In the end, when I sent it to my editor I loved them both. I love Daniel’s courage and his strength and I loved Carina’s energy and wit. I loved them together and I truly hope you all do as well!

What kinds of characters are your favorites?

The story goes like this – A few years ago, Lauren Dane decided to quit her job and stay home with her brand new second child. As a result, she had lots of conversations in a sing-song voice but no real outlet for adult thoughts and words. While on bed-rest with her pregnancy with the tiny monster, Lauren had plenty of down time so her husband brought home a second hand laptop and she decided to “give that writing thing a serious go.”

Lauren had no idea how fabulously wonderful it would feel to actually make a go of her writing and she’s thankful every day people actually want to read what she writes! She’s well aware of her good fortune and loves every moment of it, even when she has to edit and put Barbie’s dresses back on over and over again. She still hasn’t managed to figure out how to shut out the sound of the Backyardigans so she can write a love scene, though.

Review and a Giveaway: Insatiable by Lauren Dane

Posted July 15, 2010 by Holly in Giveaways, Reviews | 58 Comments

Holly‘s review of Insatiable (Federation Chronicles, Book 3) (Phantom Corps, Book 1) by Lauren Dane

Desire is the most dangerous sensation of all.

With tensions between the Federation and Imperial ‘Verses rising, one woman may hold the key to victory. The dangerous mission to smuggle her out of Imperial Territory falls to Daniel Haws and his team, the ultra secret Phantom Corps. This elite squad of the Federation Military is the only one trusted and skilled enough to remove her from under the watchful eye of her father, the Supreme Commander of the Imperial ‘Verses.

Carina is used to wearing a mask. Her father and his men think her little more than a pretty prize to be won by a man more ruthless than the rest. When he announces his intention to marry her to one of his henchmen, a man known for his cruelty, Carina knows she has to move as soon as possible to get out. But getting secret information to the Federation has served her well for years and she appeals to them for help.

She expected rescue from a man who’d been her enemy. But she wasn’t prepared for just how intense her attraction to Daniel Haws would be. Born as adversaries into different ranks, and on the run for their lives, they now need each other to survive—by holding on to the only thing they have in common: a growing desire that is dangerous, irresistible, and insatiable…

First things first: that cover is freaking hot. I don’t care who you are, those abs are likable.

Carina Fardelle needs to defect to Federation territory. Her father, the leader of the Imperialists, is a cruel man who is plotting something major to gain the upper hand against the Federation. Carina knows now is the time to stop him, especially since he’s decided to marry her off to a despicable, cruel man. She uses contacts she and her mother have cultivated to ask for an extraction and sanctuary. In exchange she offers crucial Intel about what her father is planning.

Daniel Haws is the leader of the elusive Phantom Corps. He’s been charged with retrieving Carina Fardelle. He expects to find a spoiled princess, and plans to just knock her out and carry her into the Federation. What he finds instead intrigues me. She looks like a princess, but she’s pure steel and heart. She’s strong, courageous and..fascinating. Daniel can’t help but be surprised at the depth of his immediate attraction for her. But he’s a professional, which means hands off.

They’re on the run for weeks, working their way toward the Federation and safety. During that time, Daniel finds it harder and harder to keep his hands to himself. Especially since Carina makes it known she’s more than willing to get involved with him. On every level.

I really loved Carina. She was willing to fight for what she believed in. Her family, her people, and ultimately Daniel. She feels major guilt over leaving her country and her people behind, but she knows her father needs to be stopped. Especially after she learns the full extent of his destruction after Daniel rescues her. She doesn’t let that stop her from doing what needs to be done, however. I absolutely loved how she decided she was keeping Daniel and that was that. It was a cute role reversal.

Daniel was a strong alpha male, but he also had a softer, sweeter side. He’s a trained assassin, ready, willing and able to kill quickly and cleanly. But he also has a conscience and a deep connection with his family that helps keep him grounded. He tries to keep the two sides of his personality separate, but he finds it hard to separate his emotions from the job with Carina. He wants to protect her, yes, but he also wants to take care of her.

It bothered me the way Daniel was convinced he wasn’t good enough for Carina. As the novel progresses we come to realize he’s more than just a soldier in the military. He was more than worthy of Carina, but he didn’t see it. At times I wanted to shake him. The good news is, he didn’t push her away because of it. He struggled internally, and tried to give her the option of leaving if she wanted, but he didn’t try to break things off or walk away from her.

I was also bothered by the way Carina acted about Daniel’s job once they reached safety. I realize she was in an unfamiliar situation and had no guarantees from Daniel about their future, but the way she clung to him and demanded he stay really rubbed me the wrong way. She knew what his job was before she agreed to be with him and she knew what it was when she demanded he take her. It didn’t take long for her to recollect herself, however, so it was a minor annoyance.

I loved the interactions between Daniel and his team. The Phantom Corps are a tight group who work well together. Their banter had me cracking up. It was obvious they cared for each other (even if they weren’t very vocal about it) and took care of each other. I look forward to reading more about them in the future.

Another awesome entry in Dane’s Federation Chronicles. I loved that the heroine was so strong and so willing to fight for what she wanted – namely the hero. It was great that the roles were reversed in many ways, the heroine claiming she was going to keep the hero no matter what he said.

The overall story arc also moved forward, and I look forward to seeing where Dane is going to take things in the next two books.

**Exclusive Excerpt** – Relentless by Lauren Dane

Posted May 4, 2009 by Holly in Reviews | 5 Comments

Later today Lauren Dane will be here talking about characters and her Federation Universes series. To give you a little preview, here’s an excerpt from Relentless, available tomorrow from Berkley.

___________

Laughing, Abbie waved at her siblings as she entered her building, her arms filled with bags from their day of shopping and a lovely dinner with her parents. The tension between Abbie and her father had continued but for once, her mother had absolutely refused to tolerate it and had browbeaten her father into behaving.

So she had leftovers enough to last several days as well as a new set of sheets for her bed and a new sweater to beat back the chill in the air. Georges had brought a friend by to introduce to her. The effort was so transparent it had amused her. And it was time to move on. She had to stop mooning over Roman Lyons so she’d accepted the rather sweet dinner invitation. She had nothing to lose.

But he stood there, leaning against her door, head down, a bag at his feet. Roman Lyons, a man not really tall, about a head or so above her own, but so big it felt as if he stole all the air in the hallway.

She stopped, unable to not take him in with something fairly close to wonder that something so masculine and sexy actually existed and that he’d been naked in her arms.

When he looked up, those eyes of his locked onto hers just before a long, slow perusal of her body. There was something in his gaze, hot, predatory, something else, anger perhaps?

“I didn’t expect…um, how long have you been waiting for me?”

She bustled past, trying to balance her keys to unlock the door. He growled low in his throat and took them from her, unlocking her door and opening it so she could get inside with all her things.

The click of the locks sounded, tugging deep, as if he unlocked something within her as he locked the door to the outside.

She put her things into the cold box and then turned to face him. “Why are you here acting all broody and silent? If you’re angry at me, I deserve to know why.”

“I can’t stay away,” he said simply, voice taut.

“And that makes you angry? Because I have to tell you something, that you’d be angry because you’re attracted to me, makes me angry!” She threw her hands up. What did he want from her? And why did he have to smell so good?

“I need a drink.” He dropped the bag he’d brought in and scrubbed his hands through his hair.

“What the seven hells is wrong with you?” She approached him, looking up into his face. “Are you all right?”

The heat in his eyes flowed into something else. Anguish? Sadness? “I don’t know how to ask this and I can’t keep myself away anyway.”

She froze, her fingers still sifting through his hair. “What is it? You can talk to me. You’re really beginning to worry me.”

He began to speak but then shook his head and before she knew it, he’d wrapped her in his arms and pulled her to him, bringing his mouth down to crush over hers.

His taste raced through her, chasing away her doubts like smoke, intoxicated her, blurred everything around the edges.

He made her forget everything, made it difficult to recall just what their differences were. It was dangerously erotic.

He ripped his mouth from hers, panting. His eyes flashed, filling her with an edgy pleasure/fear. Not fear that he’d harm her physically but that she had no idea where this was headed. It probably wasn’t good and yet she had no intention to stop it.

“I want you. Abbie, can I have you?”

Words flitted from her brain, leaving her able to only nod in response. He made a sound, low in his throat, all sex and need. It rode her spine, flowed into her body until she could do nothing but writhe against him as he moved a bit back, awaiting her answer.

And Another Guest Author…

Posted May 3, 2009 by Holly in Giveaways, Promotions, Reviews | 3 Comments

Sometimes I think I’d forget my head if it wasn’t attached…When I made the announcement for our upcoming guest authors yesterday I completely forgot to mention Lauren Dane will be here tomorrow to celebrate the release of Relentless (Berkley, May 5), the second book in her Federation Universes series.

Book Cover

In this erotic universe, passion knows no rank…

Since the first settlers came through the portals from Earth, fifteen Families have held the rule of the Federated Universes in their hands. There’s never been a better time than now to throw out the old and usher in a new order. Give voice to the unranked. Abbie Haws has spent her life battling the system. A fighter, she’s always been too busy and driven to pay much attention to finding love. But when she’s granted audience with Roman Lyons, the head of House Lyons, who stands for everything she hates, her instant attraction catches Abbie off-guard…

It’s common knowledge that the Known Universe revolves around Ravena–and that Ravena revolves around Roman Lyons, bred to lead since birth. Roman dreads his meeting with a defiant–if stunning–rabble-rouser. But, sometimes, headstrong personalities in the conference room make for hot-and-heavy, guilty trysts in private….

Now, Abbie will show Roman the parts of her world he wouldn’t otherwise get to see. And he’ll give her a glimpse of the Families’ age old tradition and unleash a sexuality he’d never given rein to before.

She’ll be talking about her characters and giving away copies of Relentless. We’re also going to be giving away copies of Undercover, the first book in the series. Be sure to come by, you don’t want to miss it!
