Judith’s review of Running on Empty by Ava Catori
Gem isn’t an active kind of girl; she’s more prone to sprawling on the sofa with a glass of wine. But Gem also has a massive crush on Cole Parker, and he’s never going to notice her while she’s on her couch. Last time they met, she almost took him out in a kickboxing class with her clumsy moves. She’s the last person he’d be interested in.
When her best friend Kimber convinces her that running shoes are the way to Cole Parker’s heart, Gem’s thrown for a loop. Gem doesn’t run, never has, and can’t picture herself hitting the trails. But Cole might be the very reason she’s willing to lace up. Can Gem, a certified couch-potato, move her body past the front door and capture Cole’s heart in the process?
Oh my, where do I begin? This book was such a disappointment. Yep, just flat out disappointed, was I. It sounded cute and I was thinking that this would be kind of a comedic boy meets girl on the running trail, but it’s kind of not that either. Gem and her friend Kimber were at the center of the story. Cole never really got top billing, in my way of thinking. He was a decent kind of man who I think finally gave in to the fact that Gem was going to keep coming at him so he might as well capitulate. Kind of sounds like stalking to me. Anyway, I just didn’t go big for the pages and pages of girl talk ( and it wasn’t even substantive girl talk). Gem was insecure and all the time Kimber took to build her up–I almost wished it was Kimber going after Cole.
This book really didn’t have much to it. It was light weight reading, to put it mildly, and I know that even though I would like to say something positive about this story, it’s just not there to comment on. I simply thought it was a waste of time. I have read other Catori stories and felt far more positive. I think she struck out on this one.
I give it a rating of 1 out of 5
