Author Spotlight: Poll Question #1: Your First JM.

Rowena: Judith McNaught was the first romance author that I’ve ever tried so she holds a special place in my romantic heart. She’s the first author that I picked up to start my romance reading adventure in and I’ll never forget my first Judith McNaught book and that book will forever hold a special place in my heart.

My first book ever by Judith McNaught was Something Wonderful. Right from the very beginning of that book I wanted to be Alex, mostly because at the end, she got Jordan to call her very own.

SW was the first book that I couldn’t get through fast enough and the first book that made me mad when it ended and I was pissed off because…it ended. I wasn’t ready for it to be finished, I wasn’t ready to walk away from these characters and I was so happy when Jordan and Alex popped up in the other books that I read by Judith McNaught and I read this book over 9 years ago and I can still remember the minute details about this book because I love that much…I’ll always be thankful to my sister Blanche for buying this book and leaving it around the house for me to pick up that January of 1999.

Gotta love Jordan Townsende and no matter how many times I read that book, I still love it!

Holly: Whitney, My Love. I loved it. Absolutely adored how it sucked me in and made me forget about everything else in the world. As a matter of fact, I re-read it immediately after I finished it. Now, though, I realize how flawed it is. Wayyy too much drama for one novel, and Whitney was seriously TSTL. But back then I didn’t know better. LOL.

Casee: The first JM I ever read was Until You. I remember being horrifyingly titillated by the sex scenes. Yes, I do still like it though I haven’t read it in years. I do remember liking it much better the second time around. I re-read it after reading WML, so I appreciated Stephen as a hero much more than the first time.

Alright your turn dear readers: What was the first book by JM that you’ve ever read? Did you like it? How much? Do you still love it or has your love for this book dwindled away?

  1. My first full length JMcN was Whitney, My Love, on the recommendation of my friendly neighborhood UBS owner. I proceeded to glom all her back list.

Frankly, I have a really hard time choosing a favorite title, because one of the things I like the most about them is that each man, as arrogant, powerful, whatever he may be, has weaknesses, insecurities and flaws. Gotta love ’em, really.

And I can, to this day (a decade later, natch!) still get lost in Ms McNaught’s books. No, they haven’t aged for me in the least.

  2. My first JM book was Until You and I loved it. I was probably in my teens when I read it. Now I don’t read JM anymore – haven’t read her in years. I’m now more into paranormal, vampire, memoirs, erotica books.

  3. My first JM was Double Standards. My sister pestered me to no end, so one day I finally broke down and read it–and finished it in a matter of hours! I was hooked. Even though it’s not a favorite for many, Double Standards (along with Nick Sinclair and all his cockiness) will always hold an extra special place in my heart.

I’m so loving JM month on The Book Binge! Reminds of when I first discovered the JMBB many moons ago. 🙂

I think Whitney, My Love was my first. I don’t remember the specifics of “why” but I was so much in love with it, it lead me to read all JM books as soon as they were out.

I have reread her books since and identified my favorite. WML is one of my least favorites now – especially the re-published version. Some things, you can’t go back and fix – flaws and all.

pst.. although if she’s going to go back and add to any story, it should be Tender Truimph. I felt so cheated by the glossed-over love scene at the end. (0ne track mind, I know)

  5. Sayuri

I have never read JM mostly because I came to romance just recently via Urban fantasy etc. I’m a paranormal gal. But I am willing to branch out, although I’m not sure i’m into historicals.

What would be the best JM to start with?

  6. Mine was Kingdom of Dreams. I must have re-read this book too many tims to count and when Jenny talks about her imaginary kingdom, I always get bit weepy.

  7. The first book I read was Whitney My Love and then followed with two others. I’ve now read them all and didn’t find one I didn’t completely enjoy. I wish she would publish more stories. The wait is so long. lol

  8. My first was PERFECT, which I found in a clerance sale for 0,25$. I almost never read in English at the time but the story sounded really good and it was cheap so I thought what the hell, I’ll give it a try. I read it in two or three days, French-English dictionary at my side, and I was hooked. After that I managed to get my hands on a used copy of Paradise, then one of her historicals, and now I own all her books except the last 2, which I didn’t like as much. I’m still reading her, though, and re-reading her even more often :-D.

  9. It was either Whitney My Love or Double Standards. Both are well-worn re-reads. I do quite enjoy groveling scenes when they’re well done (which I thought they were in both). Ahh…makes me want to pull them out for a re-read now. Later everyone 🙂

  10. My first was Kingdom of Dreams and even though I couldn’t stand the heroine, I still thought she was a great writer and I wasn’t discouraged to try another one. Loved her other stuff ever since then.

  11. Ana

My first was Whitney too and I have a love-hate relationship with that book. It is well-writen , the story flows , there are a lot of twists and turns and lots of angst but a couple of scenes were very disturbing in my opinion.

I thought I should never read another one of her books but then I picked up A Kingdom of Dreams and oh boy is that book amazing. One of the best romance novels I have ever read.

  12. Rowena

    AL,

I’m the same way, it’s been many many years since I picked up my first JM and I can still fall into the story with no problem, that’s how much I love this woman’s books!

    Mandy,

I know what you mean, I don’t reread JM as often as I used to anymore myself…there’s just too many other books to read and fall in love with but I will always remember JM. She’s been good to me, LOL.

    Farrah,

I LOVE DOUBLE STANDARDS! I swear I thought I was the only one. Not too many people are fans of that book but me? I LOVE IT! I loved Nick and Lauren and even Jim Williams and Tony and just the whole story…it’s one that I love but not too many people do.

    MPH,

Tender Triumph was one of my least favorites by JM, but I didn’t hate the book…but then again, I don’t remember much of the book, I’ll have to fix that.

    Sayuri,

I agree with Holly…Paradise is a good place to start your JM journey! =)

    Katiebabs,

Ooh A Kingdom of Dreams, I love that book…

    Anne,

    Me too!

    Kammie,

I agree…her older books are more my favorites then her newer ones but I did enjoy her last book quite a bit.

    Jill S.,

I’ve reread the books a lot myself, sometimes I just can’t help myself!

    Mary M.,

Perfect was perfect for me..I loved that book!

    Kris,

Oh man, I’m shocked..=) I can’t wait to read your thoughts on Perfect! Happy Reading sweets!

  13. I’ve only read one McNaught. I own two others but I haven’t felt really compelled to pick any others up.

The one I have read I did enjoy though and that one was A Kingdom of Dreams!

  14. I can’t remember my first McNaught book but most most loved one is Once and Always. I dunno – there is just something about that one that gets me.

Oh my gosh, Rowena, I wasn’t exactly recommending Tender Truimph:) I liked it enough but it definitely not one of my favorite. It has sexual frustration written all over it!
In case you haven’t read it already on a seperate post, my favorites are Kingdom of Dreams and Paradise- they were the most satisfying and well-rounded of all JM books for me.
