Need A Little Help: Some Feedback Please

Posted October 1, 2008 by Holly in Reviews | 26 Comments

I’m not sure how many of you noticed, but a couple weeks ago we switched from a .blogspot domain name (thebookbinge.blogspot.com) to a custom domain (www.book-binge.com). I actually purchased www.book-binge.com back in February, but due to some issues with Google/Blogger we didn’t start using it until a short time ago.

Yesterday, Blogger and Google were having issues and the site when down, so we reverted to our .blogspot address (sorry for any confusion this caused you, btw), but now we have a dilemma.

www.book-binge.com was only supposed to be a temporary address. The one we really want is bookbinge.com, but unfortunately it’s not available. So now we’re stuck. We can’t decide which domain we like better for our primary one. Care to help us out?

Right now, and all this time, we’ve been thebookbinge.blogspot. But when we started the site, we didn’t intend to be THE Book Binge, just Book Binge. I have a feeling most people think of us as THE, however. Yes? No?

Anyway, here are our options:

1) thebookbinge.com
2) bookbinge.net
3) thebookbinge.blogspot.com
4) book-binge.com

What do you think? Yes, we realize this is a behind-the-scenes decision, but the truth is we’re having a hard time deciding.

There’s a poll on the sidebar. Please vote if you’re so inclined. Feel free to leave a comment stating why you voted for what you did….

Thanks!!!

XOXO

I thought of you as Book Binge until I realized the was in the url. (read this blog through feed)

I think number one is the best way to go…

  2. I’m used to thebookbinge.blogspot.com so my vote would be thebookbinge.com to keep things simple since I remember when Rowena set up the thebookbinge.blogspot.com, book binge was already taken, maybe you should use thebookbinge.com for the same reason?

  3. I’d go for number one.

But whatever you decide, I’d recommend buying the domain very, very quick. It’s a sad truth that domain trolls wait for discussions like this to pop up, hop on a registration, then try to squeeze the interested party for every $$$ they can on a resell.

  4. I think of you guys as “Book Binge” but I have no preference, really.

Frankly, if there’s a choice that equals less hassle for you guys, that’s the one I would pick. Otherwise… back to no preference. Sorry.

  5. Ember,
Sad, but true. Fortunately we already own all of the choices. We’re just trying to decide which one to make our primary URL.

  6. I’ve thought about this for my own url. Frankly, few people actaully type in the url, and I think you are known by book binge more than anything.

People get to you by clicking links, not typing your address, and so I think you are known by however you come up. On my sidebar feed, it’s Book Binge, and always will be. And I think that’s what most people call you. Otherwise, people get to you through faves, a feed or search, and so in a way, does the url matter?

In short, I’m with azteclady. Pick the less hassle choice. And if you want to get off blogspot, I’d do book-binge.com.

  7. I vote for getting off of blogspot and my reason is selfish. My internet at work filters out blogspot addys so I cannot read blogs with blogspot addresses. I still cannot comment, but I can read them at work. But I can always practice patience til I get home as well. 🙂

I have no preference…I’ll visit your site no matter what it’s called. However, I’d chose one that ends in .com, cuz most people will have a hard time remembering .net.

I’m with Kris b/c I have the same problem at work. I vote for anything without blogspot 🙂 b/c otherwise I have to limit my reading activity at work and wait til I get home to make any comments. Also, any time I access a blogspot addy I get an error message and I think IT records it so I’m even more cautious. That being said, I like thebookbinge.com because it’s fairly easy for me to remember. I’m one of those people who don’t type out urls and on the very rare occasions that I did, I typed out bookbinge url without the dot blogspot. Lol.

  10. I think of you guys as Book Binge. But like someone above said, I don’t type in the url to get here. I come through my google reader or off my own site. 😛 I voted for thebookbinge.com – it’s easier to remember.

  11. I also picked thebookbinge.com – it’s straight forward and easy to remember. And I’ve always thought of you as THE bookbinge. 🙂

  12. Whichever is easiest for you. Funny I had a few posts up on my computer with the temporary URL and when I rebooted it couldn’t find the posts. Now I understand why.

  13. I still have your blogspot addy in my G-Reader, so obviously, I never type the addy anyway.

But, I voted for BookBinge.net mainly because I would never think to key in THEBookbinge or Book-Binge.

So I guess my ultimate advice is that whatever addy you choose, that name (ie. The Book Binge, Book-Binge) should be reflected in your heading and where ever else your blog name is mentioned on this site. That way people will associate that exact name with you and will tend to type the addy that same way.

  14. I use my google reader so the url does not matter that much to me.

To be honest, it doesn’t matter. If you own all of your options then set up all of the options to redirect to your blog.

If you do that and make sure that you implement some SEO (Search Engine Optimization) techniques, then you should appear in searches as well as for direct navigation.

    🙂

I think of you as Book Binge, so I voted for book-binge.com. I normally just come here through my google reader, so rarely have to type the url anyway.

I’ve gotten used to typing ‘t’ at that blank space thingie at the top of the screen (don’t you love my technical terms?) and then you and ‘the book smugglers’ pop up. So force of habit would lean towards 1 or 3, but really, how hard would it be to get used to typing ‘b’ instead?

  17. Can you buy out whomever owns bookbinge.com? Because that’s what I vote for.

I just have Book Binge RSS feeds in a bookmark, so I just click. Whatever you decide works for me. I guess 1) or 4).

See? I’m as indecisive as you. ;p

  18. Christine,
We could try, but as Ember pointed out above there are people who just sit and wait for things like this so they can drive the price up. I might put a bid on it to see, but I’m not holding my breath.

  19. I’ve always thought of you all as Book Binge so I like bookbinge.com, but since it’s already taken thebookbinge.com should work.

  20. Number one bay-bee. I think it will be easiest to deal with. I agree with your thoughts about trying to buy bookbinge.com. As soon as the sharks smell blood in the water…

  21. Seneca

I’m happy with whatever you decide.
I do like #3, though. I’m just used to adding the blogspot.com part, thats why.
