What Does "Auto-Buy" Mean to You?

I used to have an entire list of auto-buy authors. Judith McNaught, Julie Garwood, Linda Howard, Hannah Howell, J.D. Robb, Susan Elizabeth Phillips and many, many more.

Over the years many of the authors that used to be auto-buys have fallen off my radar. Mostly because I’m not as impressed with their work as I used to be. Partly because I’ve grown as a reader and my tastes have changed, and partly because the authors have gone in directions I’m not interested in following.

But that isn’t what this post is about.

I recently got Karen Rose’s I Can See You. Karen Rose is one of the authors I continue to auto-buy. I’m continually impressed with not only her romance, but her suspense. Not many authors create a good balance between the two, but Rose definitely does.

Yesterday I was blog hopping (for the first time in about a month) and I came across Nath’s review. Right there it says:

It’s been 6 years since the events of Don’t Tell where Eve was brutally assaulted and left for dead.

My reaction? HOLY SHIT, THIS IS EVE’s BOOK??? SCORE!!!

Yes, I realize it says it right there on the back blurb. But..well, I didn’t read the blurb. Why? Because this is Karen Rose. An auto-buy. I don’t read her blurbs. I see her name on the cover and I buy it.

So I’m curious – What does “auto-buy” mean to you? Does it mean you blindly pick up the book without knowing what its about?

An auto-buy author is an author whose work I collect, new and old, regardless of the storyline. When the news of the author’s work is released, I add it to my TBB list and I purchase the book despite whatever reviews may or may not have been posted.

Karen Rose is one of my auto-buy authors and I Can See You is an awesome read. I’m impatiently awaiting for her next release already and I don’t even know what or who its about. lol

Pretty much that’s it. I crack that puppy open without knowing much about what’s inside it…

Autobuy = Author I trust to deliver.

  3. Auto buy is more for a series than a stand alone. I will auto buy the In Death series without reading the synopsis for the next book.

I always try and see if there is a synopsis even with my must have authors. So far the only authors I can think of that are possible auto buys for me that can deliver are Anne Bishop, Meredith Duran and Julie James.

My auto-buys are based completely on the author, and maybe the genre as some authors write several and I am not always into all the genres. Once its an auto-buy, I could care less what the story is about as I have full trust in the author to entertain me. And until my tastes change or the author doesn’t live up to my expectations, I will shuck out the bucks!

There are a very select few (3)authors that I auto-buy everything they write. I use to auto-buy series books but lately a couple of the series have been taking turns that I just don’t like. Now I have a auto – review list which means anything that is written I will look at but not necessarily buy.

Karen Rose is an auto buy for me too. She’s fantastic.

Pamela Clare is another one – she hasn’t disappointed me yet.

Auto buy for me is to buy on or as near the release date an authors work that is consistently good.

And yes, I always read the back cos I like to ramp up/torture myself with the anticipation of what kind of storyI am going to get!

Sadly, as others have said, the numbers have dwindled – I can count them on one hand now!

Auto-buy is the reason why my TBR looks like it does… I have no restraint. *sigh*

BUT, I’m getting choosier these days. Totally agree about Karen Rose — I love her books.

  9. Auto-buy authors for me are the ones whom I’ll trust and buy their books even if the synopsis or storyline is not one I would go for usually. It’s one that no matter how bad the book is, I’ll keep… and it’s one I’ll go through hoops to get ASAP LOL 😛

  10. I have certain authors that I will autobuy..jr ward, patricia Briggs, Karen Marie Moning, Ilona Andrews and Nalini Singh.

So far, those authors have never really disappointed me.

I always read the back cover. Always. But then I’m a plot description ho – so you probably can’t go by me.

Auto-buy for me = author I buy new. Always new, and always right around the release date. Sadly, I don’t have too many of these left. Authors have either gotten inconsistent, my tastes have changed or they’ve moved to sub genres I personally don’t care for.

I think Rosie said it for me.
Autobuy = Author I trust to deliver.

But I agree w/Wendy, too. I always read the OBC blurb, too. I’ve been known to hold off on an autobuy author and read it later rather than sooner, but I’ll always get to it.

And I agree. Some of my autobuy authors have fallen flat for me lately. Sad.

  13. Like many, autobuy – I trust the author (and sure you get burned a few times but you’re buying the next book immediately).

I also stalk the bookstores hoping the book will land on the shelves a month in advance.

I rarely if ever read backblurbs and I won’t read reviews of a book by an auto-buy author because I want to experience everything first hand. Then I go back and read the reviews.

  14. Rosie said it for me:

Autobuy = Author I trust to deliver.

And if I’m already going to buy the book, I don’t go looking for blurbs, speculation, spoilers (hah! as if!) or anything–I want to dive into the novel as blind as possible.

  15. I blindly pick up my auto-buys without so much as a glance at the blurb. I feel I don’t need to because I know I’ll love it. 🙂

For me, auto buy is buying the book no matter what the book is about.
Only one author has stayed on my auto buy list.
