Author Spotlight: Lucy or Meg?

Rowena: This book has been a long time coming. We watched him grow up from the little boy in Fancy Pants and then we fell in love with him all over again in Lady Be Good.

And finally, he’s getting his own book.

Teddy frickin Beaudine.

Holly: Several years ago SEP teased us with whispers of his book, saying she thought Lucy Jorik – the teen girl from First Lady – would be Teddy’s perfect match. But the book never came..until now.

SEP recently announced that she’s writing Ted’s book. Finally. Only..we don’t know who his heroine will be.

Here’s what she had to say:

As in…Ted Beaudine. As in, “little Teddy,” the nine-year-old heartbreak kid from FANCY PANTS. As in, “young Ted,” the new college graduate in LADY BE GOOD. You were smitten. So was I. It was time.

Ted needed a heroine to fall in love with. Someone as completely wonderful as he was. Someone like Lucy Jorik, from FIRST LADY, who seemed to me like his perfect match. Yes. Definitely Lucy. Let’s plan the wedding.

Which is exactly what I did. And then I yawned. Never a good sign. These two are so mature. So smart. So completely together. So…boring. Something needed to happen to “un-perfect” Ted and Lucy. But what?

I set aside Ted’s Book (which is still untitled) while I tried to figure it out. Then, as I was writing WHAT I DID FOR LOVE, the most interesting young woman appeared.

Meg Koranda exploded into the room like a frisky young greyhound who’d been kicked out of obedience school so many times that her owners had given up trying to train her. In this case, her owners were her adoring parents, screen legend Jake Koranda and Fleur Savagar, the Glitter Baby, a woman who’d once been America’s most famous cover girl and who was now the powerful head of the country’s most exclusive talent agency.

Meg was the little sister Georgie had always wanted, and Georgie loved her dearly, but that didn’t make her blind to Meg’s faults. Her friend was spoiled and impulsive, five-feet-ten-inches of good times, good intentions, good heart, and almost total irresponsibility in her quest to outrun her famous parents’ legacies….

Meg was just the person I needed to stir things up in the perfect world of Ted Beaudine and Lucy Jorik. I finished WHAT I DID FOR LOVE and began to write their book. Yikes! It didn’t take me long to figure out that I had two books. Lucy’s Book and Meg’s Book. (One of those is also “Ted’s Book.”)

There’ll be a Sneak Peek at Chapter One in the back of the paperback edition of WHAT I DID FOR LOVE, which will be in stores December 29, 2009. Until then, I’m not saying another word… Except… I’m having the time of my life!

SEP

Personally I didn’t care for Meg. I didn’t dislike her necessarily, I just wasn’t particularly interested in reading more about her. Nor can I imagine her with Ted. I’ve always thought he and Lucy would be together, and I can’t imagine it being any different.

Rowena: I’d have to agree with Holly. I wasn’t indifferent to Meg when I met her in Bram and Georgie’s book but after meeting and adoring Lucy, I just think she’s a better fit for Teddy. I could see the appeal of Meg though. She marches to her own tune, she follows her own pleasures whereas Teddy is the opposite of that. I could see where they would mesh well together with the whole opposites attract and everything but my sincerest hope is for Teddy to end up with Lucy. Lucy and Teddy are so well suited to each other and I have every faith that SEP can make their relationship work. So I’m really pulling for a Lucy and Teddy pairing. Please SEP, make that happen, will ya?

Casee
: I don’t think that SEP ever considered Meg as Teddy’s heroine. Maybe it briefly crossed her mind, but I can’t believe that she would switch from Lucy to Meg all these years. She’s always said that she wanted to write Teddy’s book after he got a little older. You can’t tell me that she didn’t start planning (even a little) the story. That being said, she’s long since said that if she wrote Teddy’s book, Lucy would be perfect for him. No matter what kind of character Meg has the potential to be, she’s no Lucy. Which is why I think Lucy will be Teddy’s heroine.

What do you think? Lucy or Meg?

  1. Well well well… When SEP said she’d decided to make Meg teddy’s love interest in her next book, I just believed her.
Of course I’m not too happy since I had loved Lucy whereas I have no real memory of Meg from WIDFL… which isn’t a good thing anyhow.
On the other hand SEP never disappointed me so I guess I’ll just have to wait and see 😉

I don’t think SEP ever definitively said that she’d decided to make Meg Teddy’s love interest. I think Meg will be thrown in the mix, but in the end, Lucy will be Teddy’s girl. I’m hoping Meg’s role is just the girl who makes Teddy and Lucy realize they’re meant to be together.

When SEP was here for a chat in March, she wrote:

“You’re all so nice! As for Ted’s book… I’ve wanted to write it for a long time, but it wasn’t until Meg came on the scene that the pieces fell into place. From the beginning I’ve considered him Lucy Jorik’s guy (FIRST LADY). Interesting sorting this out.”

“Re. Lucy… I always said Lucy would end up with Teddy, now didn’t I?! Lucy is in the new book along with Meg and Ted. Oh, my!”

I loved Lucy in First Lady and really hope she’s Teddy’s girl. 🙂

I haven’t yet read WIDFL as I am waiting for the paperback so I haven’t met Meg yet, but i got the impression that Teddy will end up with her not with Lucy. Guess have to wait and see.

  4. I really love Lucy and I hope she ends up with Teddy. I think Meg was an ok character but nothing that made her heroine material. I think in Teddy’s book SEP has the opportunity to make Meg a little more complex and interesting. I am hoping that Meg’s character is developed while we get Teddy and Lucy’s story…finally! Then, I might be hooked enough to read Meg’s book. *Crossing fingers*

I agree with you both, I really hope that Lucy is his girl! They would make for such a great couple.

    Luci,

I think we meet Meg in Glitter Baby but I’m not sure since I never finished that book. Meg is in WIDFL but she’s just a secondary character, a good friend to the heroine. She’s a spoiled little princess but she’s not a bad sort. She has potential but for Teddy, I want Lucy! =)

  6. To clarify:

SEP never said one way or the other which girl – Lucy or Meg – would be Ted’s heroine. Even before, when she said Lucy would be perfect for Ted, she never confirmed that Lucy would be his heroine. We’re just speculating at this point.
