Books to Movies

If all the remakes happening are any indication, Hollywood is running out of new material (something my husband has been complaining about for year). With the plethora of new book releases every year, you’d think they’d have plenty of inspiration.

Since they can’t seem to find anything good on their own, I thought I’d help.

Here are 5 picks from me (not necessarily my top 5 picks, but just 5 random picks) for books I think would make great movies:

1. Robin D. OwensHeartMate (Celta’s HeartMates series) (maybe a mini-series?)
2. Julie JamesJust the Sexiest Man Alive or Practice Makes Perfect (they’d make super cute Romantic Comedies)
3. J.D. Robb‘s In Death Series (weekly drama?)
4. Christie Ridgway‘s Dirty Sexy Knitting (Romantic Drama)
5. Karen Rose‘s Count to Ten (murder/mystery)

I’m sure I could come up with a million more, but those are some that came to mind right away. I’d especially love to see the In Death series made into a weekly drama. Course then we’d have to cast Roarke and I’m not sure there’s anyone perfect enough to play him. (any suggestions?)

What books do you think would make great movies? Give me your five.

you are right. no one is perfect enough to play Roarke. It would just be a sad sad let down. I think Jennifer Crusie’s “Welcome to Temptation” would be a great movie though.

  2. Casting Roarke? God no. No one can compete with Roarke. It would almost ruin Roarke for me.

Bet Me by Jennifer Cruisie would be a good one. A couple of Rachel Gibson’s would be good romantic comedies. One I would love to see is He Loves Lucy by Susan Donovan. One of my all time favorite books.

  3. I have had this debate forever on Roarke — no one yet has emerged that could do that man justice.

Here are my five…mind you I have chosen ones that I believe could be properly casts. (So that means no Kate Daniels – Curran is like Roarke there is no one out there)

1)Hex series by Linda Wisdom – Jazz Tremaine witch PI and her Vamp lover – I can just see Fluff and Puff – TV Show

2)Broken – Shiloh Walker – Dark Romantic Suspense Movie

3)Tairen Series by C.L. Wilson – Miniseries – I would love to see this on screen

    4) StarDoc – SyFy Original Series – Yeah I like this idea

5)Zinnia – Jayne Castle – SyFy Movie – Just because its my fave book of all time.

  4. Three Wishes – Barbara Delinsky
    Home Again – Kristin Hannah
    Sarah’s Child – Linda Howard
    Aint She Sweet – SEP
The last book in Susan Mallery’s Buchanan Series – Irreistible?

  5. Okay.. Here goes my 5
    1) Anything by David Baldacci (yes, this could add up to more than 5)
    2) Jodi Picoult’s House Rules
    3) The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield
    4) The Swan Thief by Diane Setterfield
    5) Megan Whalen Turneer’s Attolia Series

    Wow, that was tough!

  6. I wonder if Jonathan Rhys Myers could pull off Roarke? He’s not tall enough, IMO, but that can be worked around on screen.

I wonder if she had someone in mind when she started writing the series?

@Lori – I don’t like Colin Farrell, so that wouldn’t work for me. lol

@Anon – WTT would be really good. I could totally picture the water tower/porn filming in a slapstick kind of way.

@Marnie – I’d like to see quite a few SyFy’s made. They’re easier to cast, IMO.

@Casee – Take a Chance on Me by SD would be good, too.

@PatL – I could definitely see Three Wishes.

@Strlady – The Thirteenth Tale…wasn’t that optioned? I’m pretty sure it was. I agree, good. choice.

  7. Hmmm Great topic. Here are the books I would make into movies…(in no particular order)

    1. Bet Me, Jenny Crusie

    2. Virgin River, Robyn Carr

    3. Three Wishes, Barbara Delinsky

    4. This Heart of Mine, SEP

    5 Outlander, Diana Gabaldon

For Roarke, I have to say no on Jonathan Rhys Myers and big no on Collin Farrel (ick). Maybe Richard Armitage, even though he isn’t Irish? He’s got that business-y look. 🙂

I agree about Ain’t She Sweet having movie possibilities. And some of Rachel Gibson’s books. I would hate for them to try Bet Me – I love that book and a bad movie version would taint it forever. LOL Julie James’ books would be excellent and maybe Erin McCarthy’s NASCAR series?

I would love, truly love to see the In Desth books made into a series. However, I doubt anyone can make Roarke justice. Someone is bound to be disappointed by the choice of actor and Roarke is so perfect i woud hate to have my view of him ruined. The closest anyone has come to him in my mind is Hugh Jackson with longer hair.

On the other hand, i think any Karen Rose book would be a great movie.

  10. Lori

Colin Farrell, maybe? In a longer hair phase without the facial hair? Hard to say. You’d have to combine that suave, debonair thing with a dangerous look, with an Irish accent. He’s the closest I could come up with. Or maybe Pierce Brosnan, but he’s far too old.

Great list. I could easilt see Julie James’ books made into a romcom. Or the Karen Rose books made into a thriller.

I never – I repeat, NEVER want to see any books I like made into movies. I much prefer books to movies because I like the imaginary world. Once you stick some pretentious, spray-painted orange, capped-toothed, big ego Hollywood star as one of my beloved characters the books are ruined forever.

The only time a movie has been better than a book is in the case of The Lord of the Rings (I don’t care how many people call them ‘masterpieces’ – two hundred pages of a hobbit’s birthday party is not great writing).

If the In Death series is put on the screen I’d rather lock myself in a basement than see Hollywood’s version of Eve and some horrible little girly metrosexual like Jonathon Rhys Meyers as big, tough, sexy Roarke. No way, thank you very much!!

  12. wow, this is hard.

I’d like to see Knock Me Off My Feet by Susan Donovan made into a movie – Gerard Butler would be perfect as the lead – he’s supposed to be Irish I think but there’s a bagpipe scene and stuff so it could easily be made into a Scottish American family. Or GB could do the Irish accent again that he did in PS I Love You I suppose.

I’d like to see a series of In Death movies but would be disappointed if they got Roarke wrong. Eve too, but mainly Roarke.

Same deal with Outlander – I’d love it if it were a mini series on TV that was faithful to the book but it would be awful if they got Jamie wrong!

Welcome to Temptation and Faking It would make good movies I think. Also Manhunting. All by Jenny Crusie.

It had to be You by SEP might make a fun movie. I like the Rachel Gibson ideas too.
