Cool Canadians, Hot Contemporaries
November 20, Vivian Arend and Elle Kennedy share a release day at Samhain Publishing: ROCKY MOUNTAIN ANGEL and GETTING HOTTER. We’re stopping off at some of our favorite blogs to ramble for a bit and share some COOL or HOT excerpts, just for fun. The theme for this post?
Hot Eats, Cool Treats
~~**~~Viv: So our theme is Hot Eats, Cool Treats. Which desperately makes me want ice cream.
Elle: Right. So we’re discussing Dairy Queen. I don’t really like their milkshakes.
Viv: In my old hometown, the DQ closed over the winter.
Elle: Aw really? That sucks. Did you have to eat snow instead?
Viv: Not yellow snow. I mean, it’s Canada, we have endless snow, right?
Elle: Not so much anymore! I think last winter in Toronto, we got like two days of snow.
Aww, our first digression.
OK, food in romance novels. How do you feel about it? (I remember when you were reading Getting Hotter, you made me cut the food sex scene…)
Viv: Oh, I like sexy food scenes, but there are certain things that just don’t belong anywhere near a lady’s ho-ha, if you know what I mean.
Elle: I do not. Please clarify.
*Jokes* I know exactly what you mean.
Viv: Notice I was kind and used YOUR word for the lady bits?
Elle: But for men, you can have more leeway, no? I don’t think they’re as prone to nether-infections.
Viv: LOL *dies*
Elle: Wait—I don’t use ho-has. I use va-jayjay. Or va-genie.
Viv: *snorts* The question is, do they sparkle?
Elle: DUH. LMAO
Viv: Because I can’t see va-jayjay without thinking of bedazzling.
Elle: We need to invent that. Now. Like a dirty bedazzler to market to sex stores OK, so, me personally? I don’t like sexy food scenes. I find them a tad icky. Depending on the food involved, though. I’ve read some romances with some bizarre food scenes.
Viv: I wrote peaches into a sex scene once, but the limit of their involvement was juice on breasts. The…internal usage…of fruit products doesn’t sound sexy to me.
Elle: Internal usage!!! LOL! I agree. Who wants food items up in there? I read one erotic contemp where the hero used a banana as a sex toy. It was all right, I guess. Clarify: ON THE HEROINE. Not himself.
Viv: *dying* Well then, good clarification. Okay…on to a less provocative topic, my snippet involves shooters. What’s your favourite shooter?
Elle: I have never had a shooter. Viv: *falls over*
Elle: I don’t really drink!
Viv: When are we getting together again so I can fix this travesty?
Elle: LOL! People are always stunned when they find out I’m a non-drinker. Trust me, though, I’m entertaining enough. People often think I’m drunk.
Viv: (Ignores the opportunity to snark) Serious, you don’t need to drink to the falling down point, but some shooters are yummy. And cool, like the one that after you shoot it, you bite a lime and the chemical composition of the alcohol and the lime makes it taste like you just bit into a piece of chocolate cake. It’s all about the science for me. *nods* Really. Elle: Oh, I’m sure. What readers don’t know is that you’re actually a scientist for your day job. Is “scientist” a profession?
Viv: Only if you add MAD in front of it! Research is important.
Elle: Of course. So, wait, are you saying you did firsthand research for that shooter scene?
Viv: *whistles innocently*
Elle: Riiiiiight. Okay, time to get to the excerpts.
Viv: LOL Fine. But you have to promise to try a chocolate cake shooter at the next convention.
Elle: Deal.
~~**~~ Getting Hotter“Where’d you learn to cook?” Miranda prompted as she reached for the water glass on the table. She took a small sip, eyeing him over the rim.
“Not from my mom, that’s for sure,” he said gruffly. “Usually she’d already left for the theater when I got home from school, so I learned to fend for myself. Sometimes I’d watch that cheesy cooking channel to figure out what to make.”
Dylan’s laugh resonated with mirth. “Oh, that’s pure gold. I can’t wait to tell the guys that you wore aprons as a kid and pretended to be Julia Child.”
Seth scowled at his roommate. “Do it and you won’t live to see your next birthday.”
~~**~~Rocky Mountain Angel
Across the table Lisa tipped back a shot, swallowed, then slammed the glass upside down in front of her. All the women leaned forward. Lisa covered her face as her friend nabbed the small piece of paper stuck to the bottom and read it out loud.
“Passed Out Naked on the Bathroom Floor.”
Oh jeez. Now Gabe knew what they were doing. “Dirty shots?”
“Aren’t most of them dirty?” Karen asked. “Go on, pick one. If you dare.”
He glanced at Allison, wondering which shot she’d had that put that blush on her cheeks. It was mostly harmless fun, though. “What the hell.”
Gabe selected one and tossed it back, hoping he had managed to pick something not too terrible. The alcohol went down smoothly, too many fruit juices along with it for his taste. He tipped the glass over.
“Read it,” the chorus demanded.
“Really? Fine.” He leaned over and checked the shot name. Ah shit. “Sex on My Face.”~~><~~ COOL CANUCKS, HOT CONTEMPORARIES is brought to you by two writers who are good friends in spite of their extreme opposite lives: big city/small town, west coast/ east coast, married/single.

Oh, boy. Dark chocolate anything works for me. I love baking cakes, but lately I’ve been on an ice cream-making kick…

That’s a tough question, you know! 🙂 I love everything with chocolate and cheese cakes best.

I’m a chocolate purist, so some plain gourmet dark chocolate always tops the list for me. Or a dark chocolate Swiss champagne truffe– there’s a store here that flies them daily from Zurich, and I swear they’re orgasmic. And crazy expensive.
Like Elle, I’m really not a drinker… but it’s always entertaining when someone orders a Blowjob [Baileys & Kahlúa or Amaretto topped with whipped cream & drunk with no hands) at a bar. Especially when it’s a guy :-).

Mmm… favorite dessert? So many, it’s hard to say! Cheesecake is up there; so is custard and creme brulee; I do also love cake, and well, cookies are delicious any time, wouldn’t you say? 🙂

Apple crisp with vanilla ice cream is my very favorite dessert…yummy! As for shots, I used to really like Jello shooters, but after getting sick one night while drinking them, I cannot even bear to look at a bowl of Jello now 😉
My favorite dessert? Either Black Forest cake or Tiramisu. Yum.
Congrats on the new releases, ladies.
