Books to Binge On: June 2019

Summer is here, summer is here! Officially, if not in weather (we’re looking at you, Midwest friends). Here are some books that we will most definitely be picking up this summer. Hopefully on a beach somewhere with a fruity cocktail.

Wolf Rain (Psy/Changeling Trinity #3, Psy/Changeling #18) by Nalini Singh.

The end of Silence was supposed to create a better world for future generations. But trust is broken, and the alliance between Psy, Changeling, and human is thin. The problems that led to Silence are back in full force. Because Silence fixed nothing, just hid the problems.

This time, the Psy have to find a real answer to their problems–if one exists. Or their race will soon go extinct in a cascade of violence. The answer begins with an empath who is attuned to monsters–and who is going to charm a wolf into loving her despite his own demons.

Casee: Not only is this a Psy/Changeling book, but it’s a wolf/Psy book. Come to mama.

Holly: We’re back to Snow Dancer with this one and I have to admit, I loved getting to see my favorite wolves again.

Rowena: I’m stoked that I still have this book to read on my review pile. I’ve been hearing nothing but good things about this one and we’re going back to our Snow Dancer friends? Yessss!!

Satisfaction Guaranteed by Lauren Blakely.

Look, she started it.

She issued me a challenge I couldn’t back down from. Make her purr like no man has done before.

Fine, she’s my business partner’s daughter. All right, I’m also working in the same damn practice with her. Yes, she happens to be my ex-fling. But that was seven years ago, and it was barely a week-long thing.

Except, Sloane is still the one I can’t stop thinking of — brilliant, sexy, captivating Sloane. Maybe a week of taking her to new heights will get her out of my head.

So what if we spend a few nights on the town too? So what if I romance her across Manhattan? It’s all in the name of scientific pursuit of more magnificent Os.

Casee: Blakely writes great, stand-alone books that are always entertaining. I love listening to them on audio. Her narrators are fantastic.

Holly: Like Casee, I love Blakely’s audiobooks. I’m looking forward to this one.

Sweep of the Blade (Innkeeper Chronicles #4) by Ilona Andrews.

Maud Demille was a daughter of Innkeepers. She knew that a simple life wasn’t in the cards, but she never anticipated what Fate would throw at her.

Once a wife to a powerful vampire knight, Maud and her daughter, Helen, had been exiled for the sins of her husband to the desolate planet of Karhari. Karhari killed her husband, and Maud had spent a year and a half avenging his debts. But now all the debts are paid. Rescued by her sister Dina, Maud had swore off all things vampire. Except she met Arland, the Marshal of House Krahr. One thing led to another and he asked for her hand in marriage. She declined.

Try as she might, she can’t just walk away from Arland. It doesn’t help that being human is a lot harder for Maud than being a vampire.

To sort it all out, she accepts his invitation to visit his home planet. House Krahr is a powerful vampire House, and Maud knows that a woman who turned down the proposal from its most beloved son wouldn’t get a warm reception. But Maud Demille never shied from a fight and House Krahr may soon discover that there is more to this human woman than they ever thought possible.

Casee: I just read Clean Sweep (Innkeeper Chronicles #1) and highly enjoyed it. I really look forward to getting further in this series.

Holly: I JUST NEED THIS BOOK ALREADY! I read the serial as they were writing it, but it’s not the same. Maud and Arland and Helen! GIMME.

Rowena: I remember when Holly was reading this serial every week and I started to but got behind and never went back, figuring that I’ll just read the entire thing when they release it as an eBook…the time is here and I can’t freaking wait for Maud, Arland, and Helen.

The Evil Queen (The Forest of Good and Evil #1) by Gena Showalter.

Casee: This book looks intriguing. I’m interested.

Holly: I’m interested, too.

Shadow Warrior (Shadow Riders #4) by Christine Feehan.

Casee: I found this book to be one of the better in the series, if not the best.

Superfan (Brooklyn #3) by Sarina Bowen.

Holly: Silas and Delilah! I need this book RIGHT NOW.

Rowena: I love Sarina Bowen’s work and I cannot stinkin’ wait for Silas’ book so yeah, I’m all in for this one…and Silas used to be a bartender??? Come to Mama!

Once Upon a Bad Boy (Sometimes in Love #3) by Melonie Johnson.

Holly: I read and liked the first book, and I’m really anxious for Sadie’s book. I can’t wait to find out what happens with her and Bo.

The Devil Comes Courting (The Worth Saga #3) by Courtney Milan.

Captain Grayson Hunter knows the battle to complete the first worldwide telegraphic network will be fierce, and he intends to win it by any means necessary. When he hears about a reclusive genius who has figured out how to slash the cost of telegraphic transmissions, he vows to do whatever it takes to get the man in his employ.

Except the reclusive genius is not a man, and she’s not looking for employment.

Amelia Smith was born in Shanghai, and taken in by English missionaries. She’s not interested in Captain Hunter’s promises or his ambitions. But the harder he tries to convince her, the more she realizes that there is something she wants from him: She wants everything. And she’ll have to crack the frozen shell he’s made of his heart to get it.

Holly: I’m still not reading historicals, but I’m stockpiling them for when I start again. Courtney Milan is a particular favorite of mine.

Summer on Mirror Lake (Honeymoon Harbor #3) by JoAnn Ross.

Summertime is the best time to lose yourself in the romance of Honeymoon Harbor…

Holly: I’m really enjoying this new series by Ross. Plus, I love librarian romances. I can’t wait.

Natalie Tan’s Book of Luck and Fortune by Roselle Lim

Lush and visual, chock-full of delicious recipes, Roselle Lim’s magical debut novel is about food, heritage, and finding family in the most unexpected places.

Rowena: I’m really into diverse romances this year and this one came across my radar then stuck around in my head. It sounds like a cute Asian romance and I’m all about it….I can’t wait to read this one.

Holly: I love the premise behind this one. I can’t wait.

Ayesha at Last by Uzma Jalaluddin.

A modern-day Muslim Pride and Prejudice for a new generation of love.

Ayesha Shamsi has a lot going on. Her dreams of being a poet have been set aside for a teaching job so she can pay off her debts to her wealthy uncle. She lives with her boisterous Muslim family and is always being reminded that her flighty younger cousin, Hafsa, is close to rejecting her one hundredth marriage proposal. Though Ayesha is lonely, she doesn’t want an arranged marriage. Then she meets Khalid who is just as smart and handsome as he is conservative and judgmental. She is irritatingly attracted to someone who looks down on her choices and dresses like he belongs in the seventh century.

Ayesha is torn between how she feels about the straightforward Khalid and the unsettling new gossip she hears about his family. Looking into the rumors, she finds she has to deal with not only what she discovers about Khalid, but also the truth she realizes about herself.

Rowena: This one sounds so good and I’ve been hearing nothing but good things about it so I’m really excited to get this one read.

Holly: I have this book in my TBR pile and I can’t wait to read it. I’ve heard great things about it, too.

Waiting for Tom Hanks by Kerry Winfrey.

Can a romcom-obssessed romantic finally experience the meet-cute she always dreamed of or will reality never compare to fiction, in this charming debut adult novel from Kerry Winfrey.

Annie is twenty-seven years old, single, and obsessed with romantic comedies (she and her mother watched them religiously, before her mom died). Her dating life is limited by the expectations she’s formed from these movies. She is not as open to new experiences as she might be, because she’s waiting for her Tom Hanks–i.e., a guy she’ll find in the perfect, meet-cute romantic comedy way. When Annie does finally meet her perfect match, it’s not quite in the way she expected, and she’s forced to reckon with the walls she’s built around herself over the years.

Rowena: I love romcoms and I can’t wait to read all about Annie, a fellow romcom obsessed romantic. I hope this one is as cute as I hear it is.

Holly: I’m super excited to read this one. Tom Hanks RomComs are my favorites, so know I’ll dig this book.

If It Makes You Happy by Claire Kann.

High school finally behind her, Winnie is all set to attend college in the fall. But first she’s spending her summer days working at her granny’s diner and begins spending her midnights with Dallas—the boy she loves to hate and hates that she likes. Winnie lives in Misty Haven, a small town where secrets are impossible to keep—like when Winnie allegedly snaps on Dr. Skinner, which results in everyone feeling compelled to give her weight loss advice for her own good. Because they care that’s she’s “too fat.”

Winnie dreams of someday inheriting the diner—but it’ll go away if they can’t make money, and fast. Winnie has a solution—win a televised cooking competition and make bank. But Granny doesn’t want her to enter—so Winnie has to find a way around her formidable grandmother. Can she come out on top?

Rowena: How gorgeous is this cover? I really love the attitude that Winnie exudes on this cover and this book sounds too cute not to check out.

Holly: Y’all, I am in love with this cover. As soon as I saw it I knew I needed to read the book, even though I’m not big on YA.

The Rest of the Story by Sarah Dessen.

Emma Saylor doesn’t remember a lot about her mother, who died when she was ten. But she does remember the stories her mom told her about the big lake that went on forever, with cold, clear water and mossy trees at the edges.

Now it’s just Emma and her dad, and life is good, if a little predictable…until Emma is unexpectedly sent to spend the summer with her mother’s family—her grandmother and cousins she hasn’t seen since she was a little girl.

When Emma arrives at North Lake, she realizes there are actually two very different communities there. Her mother grew up in working class North Lake, while her dad spent summers in the wealthier Lake North resort. The more time Emma spends there, the more it starts to feel like she is divided into two people as well. To her father, she is Emma. But to her new family, she is Saylor, the name her mother always called her.

Then there’s Roo, the boy who was her very best friend when she was little. Roo holds the key to her family’s history, and slowly, he helps her put the pieces together about her past. It’s hard not to get caught up in the magic of North Lake—and Saylor finds herself falling under Roo’s spell as well.

For Saylor, it’s like a whole new world is opening up to her. But when it’s time to go back home, which side of her will win out?

Rowena: Sarah Dessen has been slaying the contemporary YA romance scene for a while now and she’s always written my favorite kinds of YA so I will be all over this one when it comes out. I’m even more excited for this one since I read just yesterday that Netflix will be adapting three of her books into movies. Yay!!

Fix Her Up by Tessa Bailey.

Rowena: I’ve been seeing this book all over the place and I’m mighty curious about it so on my list it goes.
