New York Times bestselling author Karen Robards continues her penchant for “fantastic storytelling” (RT Book Reviews) with this next heart-pumping romantic suspense novel, the tale of a brilliant ornithologist trapped on the remote Attu Island in Alaska, fighting for her life—and that of a handsome stranger—before they’re swallowed up in darkness forever.

BOOM. That’s the sound that changes everything for Dr. Gina Sullivan, a renowned ornithologist on a group research grant trip on the remote island of Attu, Alaska. When an everyday outing turns sinister at the onset of one of Attu’s infamous storms, Gina expects thunder and lightning—but what she doesn’t see coming is the small jet plane that drops out of the sky and into the water mere feet from her boat. Even more unprecedented: there’s a sole survivor from the crash, and he needs Gina’s help. But it turns out that rescuing the stranger and getting them both out of the oncoming storm is just the beginning. Because the more Gina learns about James “Cal” Callahan, he of brooding eyes and muscled frame, the more she fears—for herself, and for him.

Cal has made a career of trading on government secrets and emerging unscathed—until a routine pickup goes horribly wrong and lands him in ice-cold water. Literally. He knows the plane crash was no accident and that there could very well be an enemy force currently combing the Alaskan island ensuring there were no survivors. Now if only the arrestingly beautiful bird-watcher with the clear-blue gaze would stop watching him, well, like a hawk. Cal convinces Gina to return to base camp and help him covertly get off the island. But when Gina makes it safely back to camp and finds her entire team murdered, all bets are off, and as darkness envelops the island, she must decide: trust a man she barely knows, or go it alone and risk running straight into the arms of a killer?

Gina is an ornithologist who’s come to a remote Alaskan island to study the local wildlife. While out alone on a boat, a small plane crashes nearly on top of her, and she manages to save one very intense and handsome man. Cal’s in some deep shit. He was on a secret mission that went horribly wrong. He’s been shot, fell out of sky in a plane crash, and was submerged in freezing water for a ridiculously long time, so Gina’s help is the only thing that stops him from dying right there in the water. Still, he doesn’t trust her and she doesn’t trust him, but because of an intense storm moving in they are stuck with each other overnight. When Gina eventually makes her way back to her research station and finds all her colleagues murdered and bad guys searching for her, she and Cal have to go on the run. With no way to communicate with the outside world, they have to survive on the cold, unforgiving island until they can figure out a way to escape.

The details in this book get pretty ridiculous. First and foremost, Cal is freaking superhuman. He’s on the brink of death, which is understandable SINCE HE WAS IN A PLANE CRASH. He has no winter gear or shoes, and nothing but the most basic first aid supplies. Yet after just one night of sleep, he’s able to make a strenuous 5 hour hike through unfamiliar terrain, then fight off a bad guy, run away, and hike up a mountain. (And of course he still has plenty of strength for sexxxing.) Riiiiight. Gina also gets the hots for him too early. I liked that she was wary, but then she ruins that by getting all hot and bothered as he’s patting her down against her will to check for weapons, or admiring his abs as she’s wondering why he got shot before his plane crashed. Lots of convenient stuff happens, like Gina and Cal finding a ridiculously well-equipped and comfortable cave and a 70 year old parachute in working condition. The bad guys and their plans are kind of fuzzy and glossed over. Overall, there’s not a lot of attention given to the larger story, just to Gina and Cal’s fight for survival.

But you know what? I loved this book anyway. I am always a sucker for wilderness survival stories, so this was right up my alley. I also liked Gina and Cal as characters. Gina has had some serious trauma in her life, and while she has learned to cope she probably hasn’t faced it as directly as she needs to. I appreciated that Cal recognized her pain and genuinely wanted to be there for her. I liked Cal’s suspicious and gruff nature, too. While he’s a good person, he’s not cuddly, and he doesn’t make many connections with others. He’s in a tough and dangerous business, and it makes sense that he’d be the way he is. But when he realizes he is starting to care about someone else, he doesn’t push it away, give some BS excuse like his lifestyle wouldn’t allow him to be with anyone, or decide he’s too manly for The Feels. He is a little spooked but he goes with it, and he isn’t afraid to tell Gina that he wants something more. I liked seeing his sensitive side, and I liked the two of them together.

While it might have issues (hence the less-than-perfect grade), this book was thrilling for me, and I ended it completely satisfied.

Movies into Books

Posted October 31, 2016 by Jen in Discussions | 7 Comments

I imagine we’ve all thought at one time or another about romance novels we’d love to see made into movies, right? But what about the reverse? What movies would you like to see made into romance novels? Here’s my own list! These might not all work as literal translations, but I certainly think they’d provide excellent inspiration for books.

French Kiss (1995)

There were so many great romantic comedies in the 1990s, but of all of them I’d most like to see French Kiss as a book. The movie is about straight-laced Kate (Meg Ryan), who goes to Paris (ooh la la!) to try and win back her fiance (Timothy Hutton). He dumped her after meeting a French woman he thinks is much more exciting and desirable than Kate, and Kate is determined to show him that she too can be exciting and sexy. On the plane, she meets Luc (Kevin Kline), a charming French thief and con artist smuggling stolen jewelry. He has to slip the jewelry to an unknowing Kate when he’s about to get caught, and this means he has to find her later. He’s intrigued by her plight and challenged by her tart demeanor–cue the funny and adorable bickering, which would work so well in a book. Even though he still wants his necklace back, he agrees to help her win back her fiance. Of course, we all know how that goes! I think this story would be perfect for a book–who doesn’t love a bad boy reformed and a woman coming into her own making out in some of the most gorgeous places in France?

Jupiter Rising (2015)

I know that this movie didn’t do particularly well with audiences or critics, but I have to confess that I really enjoyed it. I like campy space operas, and this was as campy, spacey, and opera-y as they get. Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis) is working in a dead end job and thinks her life is going nowhere. The plot is complicated and I don’t want to spoil anything, but essentially she ends up being pursued by aliens who want her to further their own agendas, some of which are…not good. She’s saved by Caine Wise (Channing Tatum), a sort of lycan solider/bodyguard sent by one of the interested parties to fetch her. The two have to negotiate the complicated and outrageous politics and characters, and in the process they start to form a connection. I would LOVE to read this science fiction romance! I acknowledge that the story would lose the amazing visuals of the movie, but there would be more of a chance to dig into the chemistry between Jupiter and Caine in a book. It would would be outrageous and exciting and just completely delicious, and of all the movies on this list it’s probably the one I would most like to see in print.

Desk Set (1957)

This is an oldie, but the story is surprisingly modern. (Yes, technically I am aware that this was a play before a movie, but I’d still like to see it expanded to book length.) The heroine is Bunny (Katharine Hepburn), the head librarian at a broadcasting company. She’s dating a company executive, but he doesn’t respect or challenge her. When the company hires Richard (Spencer Tracy) to set up a computer in the library to automate research, he and Bunny immediately butt heads. The librarians all assume the computer will make them obsolete, so Bunny and her colleagues set about trying to sabotage the process and Richard. We can all see that he is clearly Bunny’s equal, but of course it takes her a while to come around. The incredible Tracy/Hepburn chemistry really wows in the movie version, but in the hands of a skilled author the terrific conflict and sparkling dialog would translate to print, too. Obviously the premise is a bit dated, but it could be easily updated (there’s hardly an industry where there ISN’T a threat of some skills being made obsolete by technology, right?). Or, now that I think about it, I’d even love to see a version of this set in the 1950s, just like the movie. 1950s-set historical? Bring it on!

Charade (1963)

Another oldie but goodie, and another Hepburn–this time Audrey. The plot is complicated and twisty and action-packed, which is why it would make an AWESOME romantic suspense. Essentially, it’s about a woman named Reggie whose husband is murdered. This is no great tragedy, as she was already planning to divorce him, but after his death she finds out her husband was part of a group of men who stole a large sum of money during WWII. Her husband double crossed the group and stole the money for himself, and now the others have come to claim their share. The CIA is also after the money, and everyone wants it back from Reggie at all costs. As if this wasn’t enough, Peter (Cary Grant), a mysterious, debonair man Reggie had met at the movie’s opening, shows up protecting her and claiming to be on Reggie’s side as well. Hepburn and Grant are so freaking classy and charming that you can’t even stand it, but the movie still manages to keep up the tension and the confusion about who is really good and who is really bad. There’s a surprise twist at the end, too. I could 100% see this story brought into the modern age, maybe with something like a cyber crime and a woman on the run.

What about you? What movies would you love to see made into romance novels?

Lily Chadwick has spent her life playing by society's rules. But when an unscrupulous moneylender snatches her off the street and puts her up for auction at a pleasure house, she finds herself in the possession of a man who makes her breathless with terror and impossible yearning...

Though the reclusive Earl of Harte claimed Lily with the highest bid, he hides a painful secret-one that has kept him from knowing the pleasure of a lover's touch. Even the barest brush of skin brings him physical pain, and he's spent his life keeping the world at arms' length. But there's something about Lily that maddens him, bewitches him, compels him...and drives him toward the one woman brave and kind enough to seek to heal his troubled heart.

After a meeting eyes with the Earl of Harte across a ballroom and staring at him for an extended period Lily knows that she wants to get to know him better.  Unfortunately he seems to be made of steel and ice and when he’s introduced to the ladies in her group he snubs her.  Weird, since he’d been staring at her as well – seeming to be just as interested. Despite his snub the Earl saves her from ruin in the garden soon after their stare down.

Not long after that Lily is abducted by a man her family owes money to.  He had given them until the next day to get the money but a change in his circumstances pushed things forward.  He takes her to his sister’s brothel and she auctions her off to the highest bidder – of course that bidder is the Earl of Harte.  He wins the bidding only so that he can get her back home and save her reputation.  The woman does something to him emotionally and he lusts for her desperately, but he literally can’t be touched as it’s painful for him and he’s sure she would never understand.  When she offers herself up as his mistress, so that she can experience passion before she enters a dull and boring marriage, the earl accepts.

The two begin an erotic adventure that takes them both places they’d never been before but Lily finds herself falling in love with the earl despite all of his quirks.  The earl says he’ll never marry but when he realizes that he can be more than the emotionless man he’s always been he thinks he might be able to open himself up enough to let Lily in for good.

This was an interesting story.  I liked Lily and her desire for passion.  Her older sister is pushing her to marry so that they can pay off their father’s debts so she feels as if she can’t wait for The One.  The minute she lays eyes on the earl she knows that he’s the man she’s been looking for but he’s determined to never marry.  When she offers to play the part of his mistress she’s pretty happy he accepts.  I was surprised that she went so far as to do this but yet I kind of liked her more because of it.  Yes, she was a bit reckless with her family’s reputation but I liked that she went for what she wanted and damn the consequences.

The earl was obviously hard to know as he held himself back so much.  The author waited way too long, imho, to tell us why he had this painful reaction to touch.  It wasn’t truly a big revelation and I was frustrated with that fact after having waited so long.  Besides his father’s disdain for him and the fact that he grew up in a harsh household we never truly got to know him.  Because of this it was hard for me to get too far into the relationship between him and Lily.

The sex and erotic aspects of this novel were well done.  They were very sensuous and sexy and I thought that Sandas did a great job not rushing into it the final de-virginizing of the H/h.  I was slightly disappointed in the end when the author had us thinking that love would cure the earl – or at least enough that he’d be able to accept Lily’s touch.  It was a bit of a cop-out and one I didn’t care for.

In the end I found it to be an enjoyable book even though I had a few issues with it.  If you like erotic historical romances I think this would be one to read.

Sunday Spotlight is a feature we’re running in 2016. Each week, we will spotlight a release we’re excited about. We’ll be posting excerpts and being total fangirls. You’ve been warned. 🙂

Sunday Spotlight

Elle Kennedy is really cranking them out this year, isn’t she? As a big fan of her work, I am thrilled with all of the book love we’re getting. I’m loving all of her series right now and today’s Sunday Spotlight features the third book in the Outlaws series. A dystopian romance series that follows a bunch of Outlaws living in a time way far into the future, in a United States that is probably going to be Donald Trump’s fault. Haha, just kidding.

The Outlaws series is a lot steamier than what I normally read but I’m still enjoying this series a bunch.

On with the spotlight…

Ruled is Rylan’s book. I love this guy. He’s got no shame in his game and he’s not picky about who he sleeps with because he loves everyone. He can get anyone he wants too…anyone but the one woman he wants more than anything. Reese is the Ruler of Foxworth, an Outlaw city that is fighting the good fight against the Enforcers who are always trying to get in her damn business. I can only assume that this book is called Ruled because Reese is going to finally let herself be ruled by Rylan…and Sloan? Wowzers.

Excerpt

He stared moodily out the window. It was cold outside, but there wasn’t any snow. Technically it was still winter, but spring-like weather had come too soon, and with it, endless rain. The truck moved slowly in the mud and slush. He hated it.

After another ten miles of smoke-filled silence, Rylan had had enough. Enough of the shitty weather. Enough of the bleak landscape. Enough of the goddamn quiet. He didn’t want to be in his head thinking about Reese, the weather, or the dire situation that the successful raid would no doubt spark.

“Nice work with the electronics tonight.”

Xander grunted.

Okay, this wasn’t going to work. No way could he survive another two hours next to this sullen soldier, especially when his own thoughts were wandering into melancholy territory. If he stayed in the truck with Xan, the two of them would end up singing dirges and wiping away man tears.

The rumble of a motorcycle roared next to them. As Rylan looked out the window, he made out long red hair streaming out the bottom of a black wool hat, and leather-clad legs wrapped around a man big enough to be mistaken for a mountain.

The fit of his pants became impossibly tight as he stared at Reese, the outlaw queen. There wasn’t a man who saw her that didn’t instantly want to fuck her. Or if there was, Rylan hadn’t met him and didn’t want to. He couldn’t stand ridiculous jackasses who were turned off by a woman as strong as steel.

He wondered if Sloan could feel the heat of Reese’s pussy as she plastered her body against the man’s back. Now that was where Rylan wanted to be. Not cooped up with Mr. Sourface, but out on the open road with Reese wrapped around him. One of her hands would be attached to his dick, which meant they’d have to stop at some point so he could bend her over the side of the bike and fuck her until she was too weak to walk. Then, when they got to Foxworth, they’d shower, fuck again, get into bed, and fuck some more.

His cock couldn’t get stiffer.

“You’re gonna permanently damage something downstairs if you don’t get yourself under control,” Xander remarked.

“Shit, man, the condition of my hard-on is what gets you to talk? Why don’t you reach over and do something about it?” Rylan waved a hand toward his lap. Anything but his own touch would be a welcome relief these days.

“Pass.”

Beside the truck, Sloan gunned the motorcycle’s engine and the vehicle jumped past them, heading for Foxworth. Reese didn’t even look Rylan’s way.

There was a name for men who constantly chased after what they couldn’t have. Scratch that. Several names: Idiot. Fool. Ass.

But Rylan couldn’t turn off his desire, even if he wanted to.

He had options, of course. Jamie might be off the table because she’d finally hooked Lennox—or rather, Lennox had woken the fuck up and realized if he didn’t make his claim, he was going to lose Jamie. But even without Jamie, there were other options at Connor’s camp. Layla. Piper. And Connor and Hudson would definitely invite him to join them. They both enjoyed his company—Connor, because he loved making Hudson happy, and Hudson, because, well, Rylan was shit hot in bed. But afterward, he’d still have to go back to sleep in his cabin and think about the fact that they were starting a war.

Or . . . he could throw himself at the tigress. Who cared if he got scratched up a little? Better than being dead. Besides, Xan was right. If he didn’t do something about the spike in his pants, there was going to be damage. If not to his head, then to his body.

He rolled down the window and looked behind him. Ten lengths back was Beckett’s vehicle. Beck was the mechanic at Foxworth. “Pull over and drop me off,” Rylan told Xander.

The other man tilted his head. “You think she’s gonna say yes this time after months of saying no?”

“You only lose the fights you never enter,” Rylan quipped.

Maybe if he was lucky, Reese would finally throw him a bone.

Well, alright then. 🙂

Ruled comes out on Tuesday so make sure you get your copy of this one because it sure looks like it’s gonna be a wild ride.
