For Basha Argeneau, anything is better than facing her estranged family. Even hiding out in sweltering southern California. But when a sexy immortal in black shows up determined to bring her back to the clan, she’ll do anything to keep far, far away from the past she can’t outrun.

Marcus Notte isn’t here to play games—especially not with someone as crazy as the infamous blonde. Asked by Lucian Argeneau to bring her back for questioning, Marcus is determined to carry out Lucian’s request—no matter how the seductive little mind-reading vamp feels about it.

Basha doesn’t mind fighting fire with fire, especially with a hot immortal involved. But if he wants to take her away, he’ll have to catch her first…

Madame Divine is a psychic in a carnival but is she really psychic? Well, kind of, she’s actually an Immortal so can read people’s minds and those of their friends and in that way can kind of “divine” their lives. She enjoys her job but as she’s really hiding out from her powerful family she’s always on her toes.

Marco is actually Marcus Notte and has been sent by Lucian Argeneau to find his niece, Basha, and bring her in. Unfortunately it’s not known if she’s actually the rogue they think her to be or not. Marco starts working at the carnival with Divine and immediately feels that she might be his life mate. He’s not sure if she’s Basha or not but soon finds that he might have a severe conflict of interest when it comes to turning Basha in.

Marco is almost killed when Divine’s RV is set on fire and soon Marcus and Divine are off to seek help from Marcus’s friends, Vincent and Jackie…who soon involve their friends Mirabeau and Tiny. All of these people are there to help the couple but they are also interested in finding out the truth about Basha. Basha aka Divine knows that she needs to escape Lucian when she finds out that he’s been contacted but before she can get away Marcus springs a surprise on her that may save her life.

A great story! I think the way that Sands wrote Basha’s story really touched me. Her childhood had been the stuff of nightmares but yet she’d lived through it and survived. Not only survived but was a strong capable woman. When all the information about Basha’s past came out it was hard to read but tastefully written and I appreciated the way Sands brought it out in bits and pieces so that I wasn’t overwhelmed.

Marcus was a great hero – he was strong, steadfast, hot and sexy (of course) and incredibly loyal. When he thought his life mate might have to run from Lucian for the rest of his life he was there for her and ready to run as well. I loved that he would give us everything for her and hardly blinked an eye while doing it.

This was certainly a departure from Sands’ other Argeneau books. While a few of the books have had some horrific parts to them when it came to the no-fangers and Leonius Livius II and their awful deeds, this one was dark throughout most of the story. The story also had its lighter moments and those had the Sands humor I’ve come to expect in her books. That being said I really enjoyed this book and it’s a keeper!

  1. Tracy: Nice review. I stopped reading this series about a year ago…I was becoming just a little squeamish when I read them. I love Sands humor and i miss that…maybe I'll start reading the series again.

  2. Sidney – There ARE quite a few books in the series with some admittedly better than others. I just take them for the light entertaining reads that they are.
