Guest Author (+ a Giveaway): Katie Porter – Hold Em’

Today we’re welcoming Katie Porter (the writing duo of Carrie Lofty and Lorelie Brown) back to celebrate their latest release, Hold Em’.

Hot as Hell Bikes
By Katie Porter

Both Mike and Leah from Hold ’Em ride motorcycles. I’ve mentioned this fact at a couple stops on the Katie Porter book blog tour (which seems never ending, which is AWESOME. I love that we’re being…received, I guess at so many places) but I haven’t spent any time really describing the bikes.

The Book Binge seemed like the appropriate place to do that, since (I believe) Holly’s husband is a motorcycle cop! (I really, really hope that’s true or this whole post will be embarrassing. Oops.) [H: Yep – carry on!)

I’m not sure how many people realize, but the vehicles of the Vegas Top Guns series are practically an extra set of characters. Ryan from Double Down is an All-American guy next door and drives a Ford F150. Jon of Inside Bet is a playboy with a titanium-plated ego who drives an Aston Martin DBS convertible.

So when it was time for our favorite fly girl to step up to the plate, we had to make sure she had a vehicle that could hang with the big guys—because Leah wouldn’t have it any other way. For such an adrenaline junky, a motorcycle seemed like the way to go. She rides a Ducati street bike, the cream of the speedy crop. Then we custom painted it bright pink, because Leah’s still quite aware of the fact that she’s a girl. It’s still got 140 horsepower, enough to leave almost anyone in the dust.

Except Captain Michael Templeton, her hero, needed a bike that was fully badass in its own way, so he’s got a BMW S1000RR. That bad boy gets 195 horsepower.

But I’ll tell you a little secret: the bikes they have in the final copy of the book are now what we put in the rough draft. We had them on two exceedingly respectable bikes, but ones that were lacking that extra splash of sexy. (Mike had a Harley and Leah had a Suzuki.) We got that extra oomph from an absolutely wonderful copy editor who happens to ride and who made a few suggestions. Now Mike and Leah ride so much awesome that it’s pouring out of their ears—and they’re racing across the pages.

Well, honestly Mike and Leah race in more ways that one, not all of them involving engines. And it’s a hell of a ride!

Up next for Katie Porter, the co-writing team of Carrie Lofty and Lorelie Brown:

Now that the first three of the RT BookReviews 4½ Star Top Pick “Vegas Top Guns” series have been released, readers can anticipate the final two installments, HARD WAY and BARE KNUCKLE, in 2013.

November brings the m/m Christmas-themed CAME UPON A MIDNIGHT CLEAR, described as “masterful” by Publishers Weekly. In January, LEAD AND FOLLOW will launch the five-part “Club Devant” series of erotic multi-partner romances set in a hot New York City burlesque club.

  1. I have never ridden a motorcycle and would love to try it, but I’m terrified. 🙂

I’d love to start with Double Down, I’ve not read any of the series but am looking forward to starting. Epub format, if possible.

  2. Two times I remember very clearly (though they are not the only times)

–I was seventeen and a guy I had a huge crush on (but who was courting a friend *sigh*) took me for a ride on his motorcycle one afternoon.

–I was about five and my parents had just separated. My father dropped by to visit, on his motorcycle, and he managed to get all five kids (yes, you read right) sitting somewhere on the bike or him (I, being the smallest, was on top of the handlebars) and, going at just enough speed not to hold it up with his legs, took us up and down the street for a few minutes.

As an adult, it’s been quite a while since I did ride a motorcycle, but hey, that’s what the future is for.

    Best of luck, ladies!

  3. I have not ever and will never ride a motorcycle. They’re sexy as heck but scary as hell. No thanks. I’ll live vicariously through books.

  4. thanks for a fun post and congrats to the authors on the success of the series!

My BF actually just bought a new motorcycle (and he rides it almost every night) and I’ve ridden with him once. It was scary and fun and I might be persuaded to do it again. But I have to first buy my own helmet and riding gear 🙂

  5. I have ridden on motorcycles a few times, it was a rush (and a little scary) but I would do it again.

  6. I have ridden on one several times years ago in college and I loved it. I’ve even seriously considered getting a bike of my own. It’s such a thrill.

  7. Thanks for stopping by, everyone! Lorelie does such a great job with these posts! I’m Carrie, and I’m just here to make sure Katie Porter is represented out in the interwebz. Yay for hot cars and fast bikes! I rode on a motorcycle with a cop I was dating. Don’t ask how old either of us was! But I have no clue what make/model it was. I don’t think was the thing I was paying most attention to *g*

Best of luck with the drawing!

  8. I love riding a motorcyle! We have a race track nearby where there are regular races and championships. My whole family loves watching these races.

    Thank you for the giveaway!

  9. I just read this post – yeah, I’m way behind! But wanted to throw in my two cents anyway. Or rather, my two memories…as I have a love/hate relationship with motorcycles. They’re super cool, but…my first ex had a motorcycle and I have two vivid memories of it. Once, we were riding and traffic in front of us stopped and he crashed us into the back of the car in front of us. Luckily not going very fast, but I got a good scrape on my arm. And then one day he was putting gas in it, and I stepped off the curb and bumped my leg against the muffler and got a horrible burn. Serious enough to have to see a doctor. I haven’t ridden since and doubt I will again.
