You’ll notice the cover has two guys on it. That’s because the hero is a twin and both men have roles (and romances) in the book. The main hero is Jeremy Hill, a Border Patrol agent on leave and (supposedly) recuperating at his brother’s house.
Meredith Samms doesn’t appear on the cover but she is one of my favorite types of heroines. She’s the girl next door, an ordinary woman who walks smack into an extraordinary situation and gets through it because she’s smart and capable and the perfect partner for the hero. Somehow she does all of that while staying true to who she is and without morphing into an unrealistic super woman. And in this one she’s literally the girl upstairs. She’s a kindergarten teacher enjoying summer break, or she is until her house blows up and she heads out on the run with the guy she thinks is her secretive downstairs neighbor, Garrett, but turns out to be his twin, the one she never even knew about. Men…
Meredith is everything you think she’d be – confused by what’s happening around her, ticked off about being kept in the dark about the Jeremy/Garrett thing , scared, and a bit skeptical about her being the one in danger but brainy enough to know that sticking with Jeremy, a government agent with law enforcement training, is her safest bet.
Don’t get me wrong. I love kick-ass heroines, and Meredith turns out to have some of those tendencies, including knowing how to use a gun, but I also adore heroines who feel relatable. Maybe that’s because I fear when faced with a dangerous situation like being hunted by a madman I would roll into a ball and weep. You know how you can just sense it? But there is a part of me that hopes I’d rise to the occasion like Meredith does.
