Why, hello there! I’m super psyched to be here on the Book Binge today to talk about my latest release, Feeling Hot, the seventh book in the Out of Uniform series. More specifically, I’m going to be talking about that age-old romance plot line: the hero falling for his best bud’s little sister, which is the premise of Feeling Hot.

I don’t have an older brother. I don’t have any brothers. Just a pesky little sister who used to drive me crazy when she was younger, thanks to the eight-year age difference between us. We’ve only now become friends, but that’s a whole other story. We’re talking brothers here—and darn it, but I always wanted an older brother!

When I was growing up, I had several close female friends with older brothers. My friends would always end up developing crushes on their brother’s friends, and then it would cause all this tension between the three of them—especially if the crush/brother’s bud liked my friend in return. That’s when OVERPROTECTIVE BIG BROTHER would make an appearance. Suddenly the guy who constantly told her my friend to “get lost”, ratted her out to their parents, and pretty much made her life a living hell, transformed into her biggest protector. Willing to kick his own best friend’s butt just to make sure his little sister didn’t get hurt.

And then we’ve got the crush, willing to risk his best friend’s wrath just to be with the girl he likes. I’ll admit, there’s no bigger draw for me than forbidden love, and that’s why the little sister angle is always so much fun to write about.

I first used the premise in Dance of Seduction, one of the first contemporary romances I ever wrote. In DoS, the hero is asked to track down his best friend’s sister, and when he does, he suddenly realizes that she’s all grown up…and that there’s no way he can resist her! It was definitely fun to write, and I promised myself that if I had the chance, I’d find a fresh spin on the premise and use it again if I could.

That’s what happened with Feeling Hot. In this book, sexy SEAL Cash McCoy has never met his commanding officer’s sister. Or at least he doesn’t know that he has. One night at a bar, he fools around with the most appealing blonde on the planet, only to lose her number afterwards. Not long after, his CO asks him to watch out for his sister, who’s being harassed by her psycho ex. Cash agrees. He also promises to keep his hands off said sister. Little does he know that the amazing girl he met at the bar? Yup, it’s Jen Scott. His friend and CO’s sister. And now he’s gotta work pretty darn hard to stick to that hands off promise…

Here’s a little taste of the consequences Cash will face if he touches his buddy’s sister:

Carson reached for the remote. “Sure.” But rather than turn on the TV, he fixed Cash with a deadly look. “One more thing I forgot to mention.”

“Yeah?”

“Keep your hands off my sister.”

Cash frowned. “I wasn’t planning on—”

“I’m serious. You touch her, and I’ll drown you. Your building’s got a pool in the back, so I won’t have to go far.”

He had to laugh. “You’ll drown me? That’s the most creative death you can come up with?”

“I’m in the navy. I do my best work in the water.” Those blue eyes glittered with menace.

“And don’t think I’m kidding, McCoy. Touch my little sister, and you’re a dead man. She’s off-limits.”

Good ol’ Carson! If you’re a fan of the Out of Uniform series, you’ll remember him from Book 2, Heat of Passion. Other characters from previous OOU books also make an appearance…

So, I hope you guys enjoyed that little snippet, and I’m curious—what do you think of the little sister premise? Overdone? Not used enough? Fun? Annoying? Personally, I love it, and can never get enough, but feel free to disagree with me!

  1. I love the little sister plot! I don’t think I have read too many books with this plot yet. As a little sister myself I can definitely identify with the crushing on older brother’s friends thing. 🙂
I haven’t read a book in this series so far but heard great things about Feeling Hot! Will have to check the series out.

  2. Although the “little sister” theme has been used many times, it is still one of my favorite themes to read in a book. It’s one that I cannot resist! I find it fun to read about & it never gets old for me. Love the snippet for Feeling Hot! I cannot wait to read this book!

I love the little sister premise because that was me! Well, almost. My brother, 2 years younger, was in the Navy. When he came home a bunch of his Navy pals came to visit. He told all of them to leave me alone.

But there was one who moved to the same town and I hung out with both of them. My brother never warned him off. I think because I was 4 years older.

But that didn’t matter to us and we were together for many years until he died in a car accident.

    So, yes, I love it!

  5. Sounds fabulous! I love the lil sis and big bro’s best friend angle too! My brother and I are adopted and are only 9 months apart so I never really got that older brother thing. It felt more like we were twins. Thanks for the fun post, excerpt and congrats on the newest release!

  6. I love the little sister trope. I used to crush majorly on all my older brothers friends. None of them I’d liked to have ended up with now though!

  7. I love the “little sister” theme. I don’t believe it’s been overdone at all. This book sounds fantastic. Can’t wait to read it.

  8. Sounds like everyone still approves of the little sister theme 🙂 For me, it can never be overdone! It has the potential for so much drama and tension.

goddessani–I’m so happy you got to have several years of happiness with your “brother’s friend”. I’m sorry to hear that you lost hi, 🙁

  9. I do like the little sister/brother’s best friend plot. There is already a relationship there so the emotions are believable even if the romance happens quickly.
