DIGITAL FIRST PUBLISHING WITH KAYLEA CROSS
I’m Kaylea Cross and I write mostly military romantic suspense, with a little paranormal romance on the side. So far all my books have been published with digital first publishers. The Wild Rose Press was my first publisher, and because my books were longer than 65k words, they also went to print on demand (POD).
This means that my romantic suspense titles with TWRP are also available in trade paperback format, but at online retailers such as Amazon and Barnes & Noble rather than on the shelves at brick and mortar stores.
I like having books in POD format as well, as it allows me to reach a broader reader base. More and more people are turning to digital, but there will always be those that prefer print. I’m also published with Harlequin’s Carina Press, and so far none of my titles there are available in print. Would I love to be published in mass market paperback someday? Sure I would. I have received emails from readers complaining about my Carina books not being available in print, but on the whole I think readers are embracing digital books, and the e-book market is much larger than it was when my first book released in 2008.
As for myself, I love my Kindle. A lot. In general e-books are cheaper than paperbacks (with the notable exception of some big NY pubs and such), so I actually wind up reading more books because of that. Also, the Kindle is wireless, so I can shop for books anywhere there’s an Internet connection. And, it’s better for the environment because it saves on paper and shipping, since the download is instant. I tend to read books on my Kindle first, and buy my absolute favorites in paperback later on. Like the first five delicious books of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by JR Ward. *g*
Some of my favorite books from the past year are: Sheltered by Charlotte Stein, Shaken by Dee Tenorio, Liberating Lacey and Under His Hand by Anne Calhoun (but really, anything by her is amazing), and Hearts in Darkness by Laura Kaye, and I read all of them on my Kindle. Do you prefer reading digital or paper books? Tell me some of your favorite reads from the past year.

I love my Kindle too. I think I may have worn it out. I’ve only had it for 2 years but it is getting slow. I have at least 1500 stories on it so that might be the issue. I’m paranoid it will die on me. I don’t know what I’ll do if that happens. lol

Love my Nook. I don’t think I would have known about Carina authors without it (all started with Free Fridays for Nook)! The only book I don’t have of yours is Out of Her League and you told me not to read that one, Kaylea! I think I am going to read it anyway. I’ll wait to see if I happen to win it..if not I’ll buy it. What better way to keep an author you like in the writing business?
I love my Kindle, also. I have over 600 books on it now and almost as many archived.
You have a fabulous blog! I’m an author and illustrator and I made some awards to give fellow bloggers whose sites I enjoy. I want to award you with one of my homemade awards: the Best Books Blog Award. There are no pass along requirements. This is just to reward you for all the hard work you do!

I read both paper and digital books. Among my favorites released in 2011 (in no particular order) are:
The Sentry (Robert Crais,) What I Did for a Duke (Julie Anne Long,) Unlocked and Unveiled (Courtney Milan,) Archangel’s Blade (Nalini Singh,) The Affair (Lee Child,) Once Upon a Winter’s Eve (Tessa Dare,) One Was a Soldier (Julia Spencer-Fleming,) and Love You More (Lisa Gardner.)
Stacie, I’m in love with mine. Can’t imagine going without it! *panics/flails*
Amy, it’s weak, I’m telling you right now. When I think of some of the things in that book I just want to cringe. Do you think that’s how Nora Roberts feels about her early books too? I read once that she won’t read anything of hers once it’s “out there”. That makes me feel slightly better about OOHL 🙂
Estella, that’s awesome! I love hearing how much people love to read.
Jane, yes, Lisa Marie Rice! Oh, her military alpha heroes are just delicious. Yum. I’ve loved almost all of her books.
Kaylea – no worries! I have read your other books and you have solidified your place on my list of authors in which I will read all your books that come out! I want to hear Rayne’s story. And yes, Nora probably felt that way, too. 🙂
Thanks for a fun post and giveaway!
Oh my.. me and my kindle are inseparable. Even worse than w/ my cell phone. It’s always in my purse and I take it everywhere! I still love print books too but it’s soooo nice to have the option to read whatever I want, whenever I want!
I really need to read your books! They sound fantastic! 🙂
I still prefer paper books. I don’t have an ereader, but I do read digital books on my laptop. I am looking into purchasing an ereader. Some of my favorite reads of the past year include Lisa Marie Rice’s Nightfire, Laura Griffin’s Scorched and Leslie Tentler’s Edge of Midnight.

I had a nook a few years ago and I gave him because everybody praise the new Kindle and so I bought myself one (my husband actually bought it for Christmas to my pleas)
So, now I could say that I looove my kindle, it is the most perfect object that I have 🙂
My Kindle is tired and I’ve only had it a year. I’ve got over 2100 books on it.
Some of my favorite reads from this past year are The Ex-Files and A Few Good Men by Cat Johnson, Because Of You by Jessica Scott, Bear Necessities and Cynful by Dana Marie Bell, The Redwood Pack series by Carrie Ann Ryan and Her Forbidden Hero, Heart In Darkness, In The Service of the King, and Seduced By the Vampire King by LAura Kaye.

I like print and ebooks. I like the new books to the Lords of the Underworld series.

Erin, I get flak all the time for this, but I have an ancient flip phone that I use only for emergencies. Hubby won’t “let” me have an iPhone because he knows damn well I’d be on it all the time. ALL. The. Time. *sigh*
Elena, I like mine too, but I still love buying my favorite reads in paper. Digital is great for most things but I still love my faves in paper.
Joanne, holy cow! That’s a lot of books. I still have a few Laura Kaye books to read, her hotter ones. The last one I read kind of shocked me initially, to be honest. I wasn’t expecting that sort of heat level after I read some of her mainstream books, lol. I got over my surprise really fast and love her hotter works.
