The Twilight Thing (or, How I wanted the wolf to win) by Stephanie Tyler

I was at a book club meeting with Book Obsessed Chicks a couple of months back and they asked me what my inspiration was for my new Eternal Wolf Clan series.

One of my inspirations might seem a little odd, but it would make sense once you’ve read the book. So I can’t really give it away but suffice to say, my daughter’s seizures were a partial inspiration for the book. If you’re really interested and you’ve read the book, or you don’t mind spoilers, do the wiki page for seizures and you’ll find it there.

My other big inspiration was the Twilight Books, but especially book 2, New Moon. Because OMG – Jake! First of all, if you know my RS at all, you know I have a special affinity for that name but second, hello wolf! Maybe it’s because I came to the books after the movies – although I read the books first, I couldn’t help but comparing the leads in the trailer – Edward, pale and pasty (I’m sorry – I like vamps but in my mind, vamps don’t look like that) and Jake’s wolf. OMG! Huge. Furry. Big teeth. Protective and growly. ALPHA!

In my mind, there was no competition at all. And after finishing the series, I was really angry Bella chose Edward. I remember someone asking me if I really thought the wolf would win Bella’s heart…and I guess the answer was, well, anything could happen. And the wolf got gypped.

So, what’s your preference, wolves or vamps? Really, I won’t mind if you say vamps…but Rifter, the hero from Dire Needs, that released this past Tuesday, just might.

New York Times Bestselling author Stephanie Tyler writes what she loves to read – romantic suspense novels starring military heroes and paranormal romance novels, all complete with happy endings. She also co-writes as Sydney Croft. She lives in New York with her husband, her kids and her crazy Weimaraner, Gus.

I have to go with Stephanie on this. Edward may have been hotter in the books, but Jacob stole the show in the movies. After seeing the 2nd movie I thought Edward who?

  1. Hey, if Bella had had the chance to grow up beyond high school, maybe she would have picked a man over a sparkly fairy! She didn’t deserve a real man anyway – she must be the grumpiest, wimpiest woman in fiction.

In proper paranormal romance, I don’t have a preference. Vamps and weres are equally as good, depending on who’s writing the book.

I have Dire Needs book ready to go (just have to finish slogging through the one I’m currently reading). I’m really looking forward to another paranormal after going so long without.

(Don’t enter me – I’m in Australia, so as ever, I don’t count!)

  2. I has no love for Twilight whatsoever (that’s my disclaimer). That being said, I think I may have liked it better had it been Jake instead of sparkly, angtsy boy.

I also have to admit that I have always preferred shifters over vampires in my paranormal romance. I currently am reading two paranormals (one is Patricia Rice’s latest and next in line, it’s Lynn Viehl’s latest), yours does look like the sort that I would enjoy, so I have it now set up in my Amazon wishlist.

    Hope it does well 🙂

  3. I’ll admit I read the Twilight books, which where pretty good. The movies, not near as good! But that’s how it always goes, right!? I’m a Vamp person myself, just something about a dark, mysterious vamp that draws me in. I haven’t read Dire Needs yet so maybe Rifter will change my mind 😉

  4. Oh I like both, as long as the vampires aren’t sparkly and the wolves don’t have fleas! I like them dark, gritty and oh so Alpha!! *wipes drool off keyboard*

Okay, so let’s start with the obvious. Yes Jacob is hot, literally, but my cousin looks so much like him.

Edward on the other hand has my heart. Although I had pictured him way, way more alluring that Robert. He seems to grow on you after watching Twilight 14 times!! I am now obsessed with him, his squared jaw, his come hither look ahh…sigh!!

  6. I really like the wolves!! Vamps are a little too pale and sickly looking for my taste. Like my men on the earthy side!!

  7. Emily Wheeler

I love both wolves and vamps, so maybe the Dire Wolves will be able to sway me more in the wolf direction 🙂 I love certain vamps such as the ones in J.R. Ward’s BDB series, but then there’s wolves like the ones in Kresley Cole’s Immortals After Dark series that make my swing more that way. Too hard of a question, love ’em all (even demons like in Larissa Ione’s Demonica series ♥).

  8. I’m not a fan of shiny vamps so in that case the wolf should have won! That said I love both when written by good authors that get me hooked properly 😀

p.s. Like Emily I love all of them, including demons and angels – bring them on…

  9. I love the Twilight books and I love vampires especially The Black dagger Brotherhood but I also love wolves too!! I’m sorry they are both Alpha males and if written the right way you can love both equally. i know that I do. i wouldn’t run from either!! I am such a hussy!! loo 🙂
    Thanks for the giveaway.
This book looks and sounds amazing and I love the cover!!

Is it bad to say I’m an equal opportunist? Haha 😉 Either one is great, but both have to win me over! 🙂

I’ve always been partial to shifters.

The seizures aspect to the book sounds very compelling.

I really loved the romance and instant connection between Edward and Bella, but i tend to lean toward a big warm-bodied male. If it were me i would go for the wolf!

  13. Na

Vampires are my favorite paranormal creatures but I’m looking to meet more werewolves and shape-shifters. Dire Needs sounds like a great read.

  14. Definitely wolves (or any kind of shifter) win over vamps in my world. I was a bit baffled in Twilight over why Bella never even considered it. I have nothing against vamps, but since I’m always cold, I’m far more attracted to the warm-blooded paranormals LOL.

  15. Well I’ll give props to the Twilight series, it’s what got me back into reading. I’ve been devouring books since and I have to say although there are some hot, sexy vamps out there, I’ve always leaned more toward the shifters camp. They are smoking hot, alpha males! They just rock! Thanks for the giveway!

  16. Vampires win only by a little bit. In Twilight I was Team Jacob but most of my favorite PNR books feature vamps so I gues that is how I can tell. As a reader, I try to switch between the two for variety.

  17. Thanks for the great post and giveaway!

I’ve never read/watched Twilight. Don’t plan on it either.

I like the old school vampires who were strong and seductive and couldn’t go out in the sun and *didn’t sparkle* ala Angel from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I also love werewolves b/c the current crop of PNR have awesome weres. So I’m kinda split 50/50.

  18. Already posted my answer but forgot to include an email so here it is again with an email, please disregard the first entry 🙂

  19. Vamps are still #1 with me, but weres are quickly gaining. I think it’s because there were more vampire movies when I was a kid and they were portrayed as sexy sooner too.

  20. Hmmmm…Vamps are mysteriously sexy. Weres are just plain sexy! You don’t have to see the animal in them to see the oozing sexuality of a wolf. So, yeah, that’s my answer…WOLF!

    Thank you for the giveaway!

  21. Di

I’d pick Jacob over Edward too.
I’ve read some Vamp books, but not many wolves – but I’d like to read them.
