Today the writing duo who makes up Moira Rogers is here to talk about their current release, Cipher, and writing a series couple.

Thank you to the lovely ladies at The Book Binge for having me today! I’m Moira Rogers–or half of her, anyway. My name is Bree, and I’m the lucky lady who gets to write books with her best friend Donna, and have them published under the shared penname Moira Rogers. And today, I want to talk about how lucky we are to have the fourth book in our Southern Arcana series on sale in digital format today.

Writing a series is a terrifying and wonderful opportunity. The publishing industry is an uncertain place, and the simple act of having one book published can seem like a miracle. The first book in a series is something of a paradox. You have to write this first book and find it a home before you can plan for more–but it’s a whole lot harder to set the groundwork for future books after you’ve written the first one. In the end, it can be a leap of faith.

When Donna & I started writing the Southern Arcana books, we decided to take that leap. We planned out the first four books we’d love to write, and set the pieces in place for those four books to take place. In the first book in the series, Crux, someone breaks into the apartment of one of the secondary characters. It was a tiny detail, but it was one of the many ones we put there deliberately, knowing the day would come when that apartment break-in would set the stage for the fourth book in the series.

There are dangers in banking on a series when you’re just getting started. The biggest one is being afraid that you’ll set up something without having the chance to resolve it. But that fear never stopped us from charging forward.

The relationship that comes to a head in Cipher has been built across the last three books. In some ways, this couple have been with us the longest. We’ve been plotting and planning for them since before we wrote the first book, and seeing this book go on sale feels like the culmination of three and a half years worth of work. It’s exciting, and thrilling–and a little sad! It’s hard to be invested in characters for that long without a little bit of separation anxiety.

Of course this isn’t the end of the series. New characters beyond the first four couples have been introduced. We’ve contracted books five and six, and look forward to writing as many books as our readers and editor are interested in. But today we have to say goodbye to the first four couples we planned to make fall in love–and thank you to all the readers who made it possible for us to keep telling stories.

I’m fairly new to ebooks (not reading, though!), but I realize I’ve already enjoyed at least one of your books. The Southern Arcana books sound as if they will appeal to me, and I’ll have to get started reading the series.

  3. I haven’t read any of this series but I can see there’s a huge buzz about the release of Cipher and the excerpt (above) was intriguing too. Please count me in! 🙂

  4. I wonder if there’s an awkwardness when they wrote their first sex scene together or if one of them is the official sex scene writer?

My mom wanted to write a romance together when we went on a cruise. No way.

I’ve heard great things about this writing team, but I’ve never had the chance to experience them. Let’s hope I can remedy that soon.
