Monthly Reads: July 2011.

Posted August 10, 2011 by Holly in Features | 32 Comments

Holly: July was the month of Small Town Contemporary Romances for me. I think I’m officially burned out on them. As much as I enjoyed the ones I read (and I did, for the first part) I think I overindulged. It’s time for us to take a break. I ended up reading 16 books. 12 were contemps. Of those, 6 were small-town romances. Yep, definitely time to take a break.

1. The Game of Love by Jeanette Murray 3.75/5

2. Only Yours by Susan Mallery 3.25/5

3. Bad Boys Do by Victorica Dahl 4/5

4. Sage Creek by Jill Gregory 3.75/5.

5. Good Girls Don’t by Victoria Dahl 3.5/5

6. Head Over Heels by Jill Shalvis 4.25/5

7 The Seduction of Scandal by Cathy Maxwell 3.25/5

8. Seduced by Her Highland Warrior 3.25/5

9. Cowboys Like Us by Vicki Lewis Thompson 2.5/5

10. Catch Me by Lorelie Brown 4/5

11. More Than Words anthology 4/5

12. Second Chance at the Sugar Shack by Candis Terry 3.5/5

13. Serendipity by Carly Phillips 4/5

14. Against All Odds by Irene Hannon 2/5

15. Husband Under Construction by Karen Templeton 3.75/5

16. When Tempting a Rogue by Kathryn Smith 4/5

Overall not a bad reading month. I had some pretty good reads. My favorites were Head Over Heels by Jill Shalvis and Bad Boys Do by Victoria Dahl. I had some problems with the Dahl, but in the end the emotion of Jamie’s personal story made it for me. Shalvis is, of course, always a win. My least favorite read of the month was Against All Odds. Honestly, it was boring and silly.

Rowena: I totally kicked ass in the month of July and surprise of all surprises, I read more books than Holly. I never thought that would happen in a million years but man, it did and I feel accomplished. I don’t read nearly as fast as Holly does so this is a total win for me.

My favorite read this month goes to Animal Attraction by Jill Shalvis. Holy goodness, this book was too cute and I adored both Dell and Jade. I can’t wait for the release of this book because it’s going right on my keeper shelf. Yeah, I enjoyed it that much. My least favorite read of the month to the two books that I DNF’d. I couldn’t get into both books and I read more than 150 pages of each. It dragged far too much so I gave up on them both. Oh well.

This month we’re giving away:

Bad Boys Do by Victoria Dahl (pre-order)

Animal Attraction by Jill Shalvis (pre-order)

If you want to be entered to win, leave a comment on this post telling us what your favorite – and least favorite – reads of the month were. Also, be sure to tell us what book you’re interested in reading. You can put your name in for more than one book, but you’ll only be allowed to win one, so choose wisely.

So…what was your favorite read of the month? And your least favorite?

  4. Hello,

Looking back, there were a couple of books I really enjoyed in July. My favorite would be Skin Dive by Ava Gray (second goes to – With No Remorse by Cindy Gerard). I’m have to say I’m sorry to see Ava Gray’s Skin series end. As for least favorite, it was Playing Dirty by Susan Andersen. I’ve been a big fan of hers and usually adore her books, but I guess I had high expectations for Ava’s book and really wasn’t a fan of the plot/storyline this time around. Although, I look forward to her next book.

I would select Animal Attraction by Jill Shalvis.

    Thanks.

  5. My Favorite read during July was So Sensitive by Anne Rainey and close second was Bound, Branded, & Brazen by Jaci Burton.

My least favorite was Hands On by Jaci Burton.

  6. Favorite was Only Mine by Susan Mallery!

My least favorite was Tracy Anne Warren’s The Bed and the Bachelor was very disappointed she is auto buy for me. My favorite I don’t think I had one this month nothing I read jumped out as being really great and deserving bookshelf space.

  8. I’ve been reading a lot this month, but not reviewing so much – shame on me! My favorite book would probably be Shut Up and Kiss Me by Christie Craig; I’ve had a tough time with Throwaway by Heather Huffman it was a free read and I know why.

I’d read both of this months books – but forced to choose I’d pick Animal Attraction by Jill Shalvis.

  16. It was a great reading month for me. Favorite book was Tempting Danger by Eileen Wilks, close second was Master of Crows by Grace Draven. Least favorite was a book called Dating a Cougar by Donna McDonald, but it was free so I can’t complain too much about it.

I’d be thrilled to win either of the books – I love Victoria Dahl and Jill Shalvis.

  20. I’m torn between The Amorous Education of Celia Seaton and Skin Games. They were both really good 🙂 Of course I followed up with reading the rest of the Skin series but I couldn’t get into the 3rd book and dropped it.

Right now I’m kinda at a reader’s block…don’t know what I should pick up. I’ve tried reading several books but none has really captured my attention.

I’d like to win Victoria Dahl’s book. 🙂 I loved her other books!

  21. I would pick Heartbreak Creek by Kaki Warner. It had everything from humor to heartbreak and I really loved it.

    Diana

  24. Carly M.

I’ve been dipping into digital backlists. My favorite read in July was “Too Perfect” by Julie Ortolon. Glad I read the series build up, but this was definitely the best of the trilogy. My least favorite book this month was The Sinner Who Seduced Me. I just can’t get into it. I’d like to be entered for “Bad Boys Do”.

Lots of good ones last month but All Mortal Flesh by Julia Spencer-Fleming was very powerful — and I was relieved to like it, because I absolutely hated the previous one in the series.

For not so good, Bought for her Baby by Melanie Milbourne. Very cliche, same-old-same-old HP.

Both books sound appealing, guess I’ll go with the Shalvis.

  26. July was an ok month for me. I was on a Sarah Mayberry binge and read all of her Blaze books and some SuperRomances and I love them all. Her sense of writing is wonderful and just right up my alley.

I would love to win either of the books. Thanks!

My least favorite was Stephanie Laurens’ Temptation and Surrender. I normally love this author, but this book took me well over a month to finish because I kept getting bored. I only finished it because of loyalty to the author and so I could get on to reading the Bride quartet. My favorite was a reread of Thea Harrison’s Dragon Bound to have the world fresh in my mind when I read Storm’s Heart.

I’m most interested in reading Animal Attraction.

  28. Well, gee, I posted this earlier on the wrong month’s post. So, I will say again that my favorite reads were MY ONE AND ONLY by Kristan Higgins and WHEN BEAUTY TAMED THE BEAST by Eloisa James. Least favorite, but not a bad story, was THE COMEBACK COWBOY by Cathy McDavid.

I’d love to be in the running for Jill Shalvis’ book.
