Favorite Themes in Romance

First, thank you so much to Holly for letting me hang out here at The Book Binge today! I’ve been reading romance for a long time; longer than I’ll admit. There are so many wonderful themes in romance and while some are subtly woven into the story, others are more in your face. I like both tactics as long as the story is entertaining and I’m rooting for the main characters. As I was looking at my keeper shelf (both physical and on my Kindle) I realized that I’m definitely drawn to certain themes in my romance reading. Some of my favorites are:

1. Friends to Lovers
2. Reunited Lovers
3. Marriage of Convenience (love this in historical romance!)
4. Redemption of one of the main characters
5. Virgin Heroes (that’s right, heroes, not heroines)
6. Main characters with disabilities
7. ‘Beauty and the Beast’
8. Secrets

I don’t know if it’s actually a theme but I also love romances where the hero is a cowboy. Something about a guy riding a horse and wearing a Stetson is just plain hot.

Considering my love of the above themes it’s no surprise that my new release, DEADLY OBSESSION, is about reunited lovers. Braden and Lilly were high school sweethearts who split up because of a secret (one the hero doesn’t know about). When circumstances force them to work together after a decade of no contact, there’s no denying the chemistry they once had is still present and hotter than ever. With a homicidal maniac taunting them at every turn, they’re fighting for their lives and a second chance at love.

What are some of your favorite themes in romance? Feel free to share the titles. One commenter will be selected to win a digital copy of Deadly Obsession.

A little about me: I’ve been reading romance from a young age (since I discovered my mom’s hidden stash) and the addiction stayed with me into adulthood. I write dark paranormal romance and sexy, fast-paced romantic suspense. Currently I write for Carina Press, Harlequin Nocturne (Destined Mate, October 2011), and in early 2012 the first book in my paranormal series will release from NAL/Signet Eclipse (Alpha Instinct: A Moon Shifter Novel). Deadly Obsession now available from Carina Press.

The chilling words of a killer: This is just the beginning…

Ten years ago, Lilly Carmichael left town without an explanation, breaking Braden Donnelly’s heart. The death of her aunt has brought Lilly home–and face to face with memories she thought were long buried. Still getting over a traumatic incident from her work as an NSA agent, Lilly initially dismisses the face at her window as a figment of stress-induced paranoia.

Now the sheriff of Hudson Bay, Braden has spent the last year hunting a sadistic murderer. But his investigation is turned upside down when new evidence indicates that Lilly is the killer’s next target. Determined to protect the woman he’s never stopped loving, Braden must race against the clock to trap a dangerous psychopath—before it’s too late…

  1. Hi, Katie! I think my favorite of those themes you mentioned is friends-to-lovers. And if the hero is military or ex-military, I’m a goner 🙂

Congrats again on the release of DO! This villain is seriously creepy.

  2. Joanna V

I definitely agree with some of your themes, especially the marriage of convenience and Beauty and the Beast, and I have to add another favorite for me is “damaged” heroes.

Looking forward to your new book, it looks very interesting.

  3. Kat

Marriage of convenience and friends to lovers plot are two of my favorites. What I did for a Duke by Julie Anne Long is a good friend to love book.

  4. Kim

I like most of the tropes you listed, especially the friends to lovers and reunited lovers trope. Paradise by Judith McNaught has a wonderful reunited lovers theme and The Secret Diaries of Miss Miranda Cheever by Julia Quinn has a terrific friends to lovers trope.

  5. Seems like a lot of these are faves! And I love the addition of damaged heroes. Great choice! 🙂 Thanks everyone who’s stopped by today!
