Series: Angelfire, Book 1

First there are nightmares.

Every night Ellie is haunted by terrifying dreams of monstrous creatures that are hunting her, killing her.

Then come the memories.

When Ellie meets Will, she feels on the verge of remembering something just beyond her grasp. His attention is intense and romantic, and Ellie feels like her soul has known him for centuries. On her seventeenth birthday, on a dark street at midnight, Will awakens Ellie’s power, and she knows that she can fight the creatures that stalk her in the grim darkness. Only Will holds the key to Ellie’s memories, whole lifetimes of them, and when she looks at him, she can no longer pretend anything was just a dream.

Now she must hunt.

Ellie has power that no one can match, and her role is to hunt and kill the reapers that prey on human souls. But in order to survive the dangerous and ancient battle of the angels and the Fallen, she must also hunt for the secrets of her past lives and truths that may be too frightening to remember.

I picked this book up to read because the blurb sounded interesting and I’ve been leaning toward reading a lot of darker stories lately. What nudged me toward reading this sooner rather than later was a conversation that I had about this book with the author and two other tweet hearts on Twitter. They were talking about awesome swords and my curiosity was piqued.

The story follows a young girl named Ellie as she tries to make sense of the changes her life is taking. She’s having nightmares about events that seem so real to her and then she meets this strange guy named Will who talks to her like he’s known her forever and the curious part of it all is that there is something familiar about him.

The monstrous creatures that are haunting Ellie at every turn in her dreams are coming into her real life and Ellie is surprised by how though they scare her, she fights them like she’s been fighting them all of her life. Will keeps turning up, helping her and before she knows what’s what, Will has opened up her powers and she starts training for her purpose on this earth.

The whole story revolves around Ellie and it introduces us to the battle that is on Ellie’s shoulders whether she remembers or not. Will helps Ellie’s memory along by unleashing her powers and fighting by her side. They’re fighting the reapers that keep popping up trying to kill her. There’s trouble brewing and Will is anxious for Ellie to get her memory back and the more she’s around Will, the more she remembers.

I really enjoyed this book. So much is happening in this book and at such a fast pace that I stayed at the edge of my seat, waiting for more. I couldn’t read this book fast enough because it was that good. Getting to know both Will and Ellie made for some wonderful hours of reading. Hours that were well spent trying to find out what’s going to happen to Ellie and who the heck are all of these people trying to off her?

The bond that springs forth between Will and Ellie made this book all the more outstanding. I loved the devotion Will had to do his job, how he would find her no matter how long it took in between cycles and the steadfastness and loyalty he showed to Ellie made my heart go all aflutter where he was concerned. Will is Ellie’s Guardian and he’s got her back. Reminds me of the male version of this song:

That’s Will for you, he got her back!

The world that Moulton introduces in this book is fantastic and I’m pretty anxious for the next installment. The characters were three dimensional characters and the story moved at a great pace that made the story really pop. The way that Moulton told this book brought the story to life and I felt like it was all unfolding right before me. Ellie and her angelfire swords were the bomb and Will’s fighting skills were second to none. I do admit that I’m mighty curious about Cadan and hope to high heaven that there will be more about him in the next book. This is a great debut novel and I can’t wait for more from this author.

Kudos to Courtney Allison Moulton on a job well done on this book.

..and that’s your scoop!

I did enjoy this one. I enjoyed it more than I thought I was going to enjoy it and I’m glad for it because I’m so anxious for more.
